View 4 RepliesI'm messing around with this motherboard my dad had RMA'd to see if I can turn it into a usuable computer. Works fine but the one thing that's got me perplexed is the DVD drives plugged into it. The DVD writer seems to "read when it wants to", which is really weird. A lot of the time, it just won't read anything but sometimes it does read discs (I even burnt a disc using it). The drive is there in Windows Explorer and the BIOS also catches it but I can't get it to boot from the DVD drive (but it DID boot once so I managed to install Windows from it). In Windows I put discs in and it makes no attempt to read them...unless it suddenly WANTS to read them and then does. Does this make any sense? A drive almost literally reading discs when it feels like it wants to read them.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIf i put any memory device in, it says i must format the disk before i can use it...but I have alot of information on them and its pointless to delete information that i want to see. If i click on the properties of the disk it says i have 0% unused information. I turned auto play off and even uninstalled ROXIO. With ROXIO deleted, the cd drive now says i must insert a disk but there is already one in there. The other drives still say the same as they did before ROXIO was deleted. This problem started off as the cd drive only messing up sometimes. Then it stopped working completely. Within a few weeks i couldnt use any of the drives. Ive tried many diagnostic tests and no luck.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with a USB flash drive I have had for quite a while, that Windows Vista insists all the files and folders on it are read-only. I can create a new directory on the drive, but not rename it, and I can copy files onto the drive, but not delete them from the drive. I have found no way to correct the problem. For example if I look at the properties of folder on the drive and uncheck the "read only" checkbox, it does it, but is read-only the next time I try to use it. Does anyone know the source of this curious behaviour (which a few other people have also reported) and how to fix it?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a hp laptop running Vista Home Premium. I've been quite pleased, but have a minor issue with the read only permissions. While trying to move a file in an .iso image on a virtual drive, Vista said it needed permission to preform the action. I clicked the allow button, and it seemed to continue, only to tell me moments later that I needed permission. I looked into the issue, and discovered that the folders were both read-only, an attribute I've tried to remove several times. Any ideas? And yes, I am logged in as the admin.
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy DVD-drive doesn't read disc's. The drive I'm using is TSSTcorp SH-S223Q ATA, so a Samsung DVD-drive. When I bought it, it read fine, but not anymore. It doesn't read even bootable disc's (I tried Vista Ultimate x64). I've tried upgrading firmware from B00 to B03, but it didn't help. I had a similar problem when I bought this computer in August 2008. My DVD-drive read the disc's fine for couple weeks or so and then it stopped working. Then I replaced it with this drive (It's not the same model). This one worked fine for a month or two and stopped working, so it's been couple of months not functioning. I just did a fresh install of Vista yesterday and the problem is still here.
View 9 Replies View Relatedim trying to regain write-access to an external hard drive which, after a reboot, Vista decided it would no longer let me write anything to...(worth repeating, i didnt change any setting in order for this to happen, i just rebooted!) In an earlier question on this issue someone suggested the followin The problem is that i cannot finally get the permissions back to normal following these steps. At the last "click on the OK button" i get an alert telling me various files are read only (Vista alerts to one file at a time, obviously) and therefore is unable to make the required changes.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Home Premium 64-bits, installed one month ago and never tried this until now. When I insert a blank DVD or CD, it doesn't show anything and then I got to My Computer and double click the DVD icon and I get the message that "Windows can not read the disk on drive D:" or something like that. So I went to the manufacturer site and downloaded firmware, updated, rebooted and still having the same issue. However I can read used disks, and I can burn perfectly using third party burning software. What is going on?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am having a quirky issue with my DVD drive and hopefully someone will know where to start. It seems that the drive will read CDs (opening them in iTunes) and music DVDs (playing in Mplayer), but the system completely hangs and freezes when trying to load a data disc. Specifically, the system will continually try and open the DVD (spinning away) and cause serious lag to the computer. When trying to eject the DVD, it will then cause the computer to freeze and require a reboot.
The data discs that I'm using are all programs that I've previously loaded on my XP install, so I know the discs aren't corrupt. I'm also running a 32 bit version of Vista, so I'm not worried about 64 bit compatibility issues. The drive is a Lite-on (DH-20A4P) IDE based drive, set as Master on the cable. There are no other devices hooked to the IDE cable, and the cable is also brand new (came with motherboard). Here's the steps I've taken thus far to diagnose the problem -- with no fixes working.
- Downloaded and installed newest drivers for the DVD drive
- Flashed the DVD drive firmware with most current version
- Uninstalled then reinstalled DVD drive through Device Manager
- Disabled autorun feature
- Checked connections from drive to motherboard
The drive obviously is working properly since I'm able to play CDs and DVD movies/music. It might be worth noting that I used this same drive to install Vista, but perhaps the updates horked my drive? I'm thinking this is a Vista software issue, but can't think of anything else to try. I'm also hesitant to wipe and reinstall Vista for such a small issue.
I just got a new HP desktop with 64bit Home Premium. My external, which I loaded from my Dell laptop (with Windows XP), now is all read-only. (The read only box is filled, rather than checked.) I cannot modify any files in he drive, but can access them all. I have already tried the following proposed fixes with no success:
- Right-click on drive; properties; tools tab; check now; unchecked both boxes and started and completed the check with no errors
- Changed drive ownership to administrator
- Changed drive ownership to my personal account
After each of these I tried to clear the read-only box, but the files still can't be modified, and the filled box is back when I re-open the properties on folders inside the drive.
Hard drive died, replaced, reloaded Vista Premium x64. I can read the files on the bad hard drive, have attached as an external drive and want to transfer all Windows Mail files to the new hard drive and then restart Windows Mail. Is this possible? Can all files be transferred? The files and folders are in (user name)/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail. Can I just replace the Windows Mail folder with the folder from the old drive? Are there additional files that will need to be copied?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am Using Vista Ultimate 64. I would like to tranfer my entire drive incuding all files and the Operating system From my current IDE HDD to a new SATA Drive of the sames size (500 Gig) I need the IDE Drive for an older computer ( The 40 Gig IBM Deathstar still functions great, but all programs seem more bloated these Days)
Anyway I went to Administrative Tools and Formated the New Drive NFTS with no Drive Letter. But I cannot get it recognized as a transfer device when I go to system backup. Can I use 'C' on the second and soon to be only drive? If I have to use E or F for now can I change it back later. would that affect the file system? I intend to Low level Format the IDE and try cloning the old machine's XP Drive (32 bit) to it in the second place.
I have a lot of misc. cds that a friend who passed away made. They are pics & music mostly. Some slide shows too but I can't get them to open anywhere.
I told his wife I'd go through them but impossible if my computer won't read them. I believe most of them were made on XP and I have Vista. Called Gateway but they didn't know. I tried a couple on an HP with XP and they all were read. Does anyone know if this is a Vista problem or is it my computer?
My warranty is up in May so I'm hoping if it's the computer I'll have time to get it fixed under warranty.
Another Vista Ultimate 32bit weird prob I have. Whenever I insert any disc be it CD/DVD, and I double-click on the DVD icon to open it, I keep getting "Prepare this disc" option to Live format the disc. The disc could be anything a closed session disc, a manufacturer disc, I keep getting this prob. So only two ways to go ahead.
1. I've DOpus - Directory Opus, an alternative to Windows Explorer in which I can Sometimes view the disc, though not always
2. The best way I've figured out is for me to simply click "Next" and wait for Windows to tell me that it cannot format my disc and then I can access the contents.
3. Auto-run registry fix doesnt cure it. (updated after flavirus replied)
Any Ideas why this is happening? I uninstalled the drivers of my drives, I've two, Sony DVD-writer SATA and Lite-on DVD-writer IDE. In WinXP I didn't have this prob with these drives, so i know this is a software issue.
I have an emachine w3619 with dual core 2160 intel, 1.5 gig ram and windows vista 32 bit home premium. Recently my cd/dvd drive stopped reading cds. When i went into device manager it said the device was functioning properly and the drivers were up to date. I uninstalled the cd/dvd rom drive and restarted that did not fix the problem either. I deleted the upper and lower filters through regedit as some people had mentioned this did not fix the problem for me. My cd/dvd rom shows up in "computer" but always acts as if the drive is empty. Anyone else had the same problem?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using an SD card in my laptop for portable storage for ~6 months. Suddenly, I have started getting an error message saying that "Disk is write protected." The tab on the SD card is in the unlock position. I have tried using the properties window to change it but their is no option to change it from Read Only or Change Permissions. If I click on a folder on the SD card and try to change it via the Properties Windows the window says that it is "Read Only" but when I uncheck "Read Only," it says I can't
because the disk is Read Only. And again I can't find any option to change
ownership or permissions.
I have copied all my internet favourites folders in from Windows XP (IE7). I didn't use a password in XP and still don't in Vista.
Now, I can't organise or add-to any of the folders in Vista. It says they are read-only.
When I display the properties of the folders, they have a green square (mixed content) in the read-only tick-box. I switch it off and accept the prompt which says that it will apply to files and sub-folders.
But when I go to use them they are still read-only, and when I look at their properties, they are unchanged - still flagged with mixed content. And I still can't organise or add to them.
This morning I was able to access my SD card for my camera with no problem. But then all of a sudden I went to download some pictures that I had taken afterwards and the computer doesn't recognize the card. When I unplug it from the reader it does the ejection sound but when I plug it in it gives an error sound (three small low grade beeps). I put the SD back in my camera and the pictures are still there. Why is Vista not recognizing the card all of a sudden?

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy company has an Excel application we have developed and we use an Installer program to distribute it. The installer default is to install the program into a Program File that is named. This works flawlessly on xp but on any computer that has Vista installed, the file opens in Read Only, which defeats our entire application. The read only format can not be changed in any of the obvious ways (under Properties etc). This is a huge problem for us. Is there any way around it?
