Jun 10, 2009I want to load 'LifeCam 1.4 ' webcam software, but Vista does not want to read the CD drive. I can't even see it in Explorer.

Can't Get Lifecam Load Properly
Nov 19, 2009I can't get my lifecam to load properly into vista even with updated software. I have a 6 GB hard drive and saw somewhere that if your HD is over 4 gb you need a hotfix from windows to enable it to download properly.

Mar 1, 2009Hard drive died, replaced, reloaded Vista Premium x64. I can read the files on the bad hard drive, have attached as an external drive and want to transfer all Windows Mail files to the new hard drive and then restart Windows Mail. Is this possible? Can all files be transferred? The files and folders are in (user name)/App Data/Local/Microsoft/Windows Mail. Can I just replace the Windows Mail folder with the folder from the old drive? Are there additional files that will need to be copied?

May 15, 2008I am trying a new install on a new machine. I have 2 WD 250 GB drives (not in RAID config). When VISTA installs it tells me the first drive is not recognized as boot drive and won't load. I tried to install on second drive and get a error message about a volume does not meet VISTA criteria (or something like that)and won't install. These are both brand new drives. Both drives are correctly identified in the BIOS.

May 15, 2009I'm messing around with this motherboard my dad had RMA'd to see if I can turn it into a usuable computer. Works fine but the one thing that's got me perplexed is the DVD drives plugged into it. The DVD writer seems to "read when it wants to", which is really weird. A lot of the time, it just won't read anything but sometimes it does read discs (I even burnt a disc using it). The drive is there in Windows Explorer and the BIOS also catches it but I can't get it to boot from the DVD drive (but it DID boot once so I managed to install Windows from it). In Windows I put discs in and it makes no attempt to read them...unless it suddenly WANTS to read them and then does. Does this make any sense? A drive almost literally reading discs when it feels like it wants to read them.

Aug 4, 2009If i put any memory device in, it says i must format the disk before i can use it...but I have alot of information on them and its pointless to delete information that i want to see. If i click on the properties of the disk it says i have 0% unused information. I turned auto play off and even uninstalled ROXIO. With ROXIO deleted, the cd drive now says i must insert a disk but there is already one in there. The other drives still say the same as they did before ROXIO was deleted. This problem started off as the cd drive only messing up sometimes. Then it stopped working completely. Within a few weeks i couldnt use any of the drives. Ive tried many diagnostic tests and no luck.

May 23, 2008I have a problem with a USB flash drive I have had for quite a while, that Windows Vista insists all the files and folders on it are read-only. I can create a new directory on the drive, but not rename it, and I can copy files onto the drive, but not delete them from the drive. I have found no way to correct the problem. For example if I look at the properties of folder on the drive and uncheck the "read only" checkbox, it does it, but is read-only the next time I try to use it. Does anyone know the source of this curious behaviour (which a few other people have also reported) and how to fix it?

Aug 1, 2009I recently purchased a hp laptop running Vista Home Premium. I've been quite pleased, but have a minor issue with the read only permissions. While trying to move a file in an .iso image on a virtual drive, Vista said it needed permission to preform the action. I clicked the allow button, and it seemed to continue, only to tell me moments later that I needed permission. I looked into the issue, and discovered that the folders were both read-only, an attribute I've tried to remove several times. Any ideas? And yes, I am logged in as the admin.

Apr 18, 2009my DVD-drive doesn't read disc's. The drive I'm using is TSSTcorp SH-S223Q ATA, so a Samsung DVD-drive. When I bought it, it read fine, but not anymore. It doesn't read even bootable disc's (I tried Vista Ultimate x64). I've tried upgrading firmware from B00 to B03, but it didn't help. I had a similar problem when I bought this computer in August 2008. My DVD-drive read the disc's fine for couple weeks or so and then it stopped working. Then I replaced it with this drive (It's not the same model). This one worked fine for a month or two and stopped working, so it's been couple of months not functioning. I just did a fresh install of Vista yesterday and the problem is still here.

So I went to the manufacturer site and downloaded firmware, updated, rebooted and still having the same issue. However I can read used disks, and I can burn perfectly using third party burning software. What is going on?

Mar 23, 2008Running Vista Ultimate, had tried to install Logitech Pro 3000 cam. Not able to do so, bought Microsoft LifecamVX-3000 which is supposed to be Vista certified. Inserted the installation disc as instructions and was told that it was not compatible with Vista. Link to Microsoft where an updated file was available. Downloaded and installed and plugged in USB connector for the Cam as instructed. Plug and Play now pops up and tells me that it is not certified. Another box comes up telling me that it is finished. Close the Plug and Play dialog box. and the another box tells me that installation has failed and underneath thia I get, Installation was successfull. Am not able to use it because Cam has not been detected.

Jan 20, 2009I am having a quirky issue with my DVD drive and hopefully someone will know where to start. It seems that the drive will read CDs (opening them in iTunes) and music DVDs (playing in Mplayer), but the system completely hangs and freezes when trying to load a data disc. Specifically, the system will continually try and open the DVD (spinning away) and cause serious lag to the computer. When trying to eject the DVD, it will then cause the computer to freeze and require a reboot.
The data discs that I'm using are all programs that I've previously loaded on my XP install, so I know the discs aren't corrupt. I'm also running a 32 bit version of Vista, so I'm not worried about 64 bit compatibility issues. The drive is a Lite-on (DH-20A4P) IDE based drive, set as Master on the cable. There are no other devices hooked to the IDE cable, and the cable is also brand new (came with motherboard). Here's the steps I've taken thus far to diagnose the problem -- with no fixes working.
- Downloaded and installed newest drivers for the DVD drive
- Flashed the DVD drive firmware with most current version
- Uninstalled then reinstalled DVD drive through Device Manager
- Disabled autorun feature
- Checked connections from drive to motherboard
The drive obviously is working properly since I'm able to play CDs and DVD movies/music. It might be worth noting that I used this same drive to install Vista, but perhaps the updates horked my drive? I'm thinking this is a Vista software issue, but can't think of anything else to try. I'm also hesitant to wipe and reinstall Vista for such a small issue.
WD External Hard Drive Trouble With Read-only Access
Jul 29, 2009I just got a new HP desktop with 64bit Home Premium. My external, which I loaded from my Dell laptop (with Windows XP), now is all read-only. (The read only box is filled, rather than checked.) I cannot modify any files in he drive, but can access them all. I have already tried the following proposed fixes with no success:
- Right-click on drive; properties; tools tab; check now; unchecked both boxes and started and completed the check with no errors
- Changed drive ownership to administrator
- Changed drive ownership to my personal account
After each of these I tried to clear the read-only box, but the files still can't be modified, and the filled box is back when I re-open the properties on folders inside the drive.

Dec 25, 2008Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.
My question is-
Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).
OC To Over 10%, Vista Won't Load
Sep 7, 2008I bought an ASUS Striker II Formula, and it the DVD it has comes with a lot a stuff to install. One of them is AI Suite, which has a couple of features including the OC program AI booster. For some reason when I try to OC to over 10%, Vista won't load. If anyone knows a better OC program please tell me or help me with this program. The version of AI Suite is 1.03.16. Just so you know, when I overclock to 10%, my CPU temperature stays at or under 40 degrees Celsius. When every CPU core is a 100%, the temperature is 56 degrees Celsius.

Oct 10, 2008i have Corsair XMS2 DDR2 1GBx2 memory sticks in my computer, i installed vista with this Ram and then after installation decided to place another 2GB's of RAM. My issue currently is that Windows Vista will not load with 4GB's of Ram or even 3GB's. When i try to re-install Windows Vista with the new RAM in my pc restarts before installation begins, when i plug the ram in and try to run Vista normally, it either restarts at the loading screen or just crashes completely......
I have heard that there is a windows update which may resolve this issue however you need 3GB's of RAM installed, which my computer wont allow. Any Bios related or any solution in general, could you please go into great detail and if possible step by step guides of how to fix this problem, i have a basic bios knowledge however take my knowledge as 0. (I have also Updated Vista to SP1 and have completed all Vital Updates)
Can't Vista Load
Mar 24, 2008the problem is that i can't get vista to load. it has told me that winlog.exe is corrupt and that i need to run start up repair. the main problem with this is that windows won't start so i can't run the repair program i have ran the advanced boot options as suggested in the help and support options. i dont see the repair comp option. i have tried every other option, nothing is working. what do i do? and more importantly how do i do it?

I bought the same memory, set duel channel 1 gig a-dat memory ddr 400 and installed them on my vista 64 bit system the bios reads 4gig np but windows will not load (windows error recovery) no specific error listed. I then took out my original memory and left the new in the newly used duel chanel slots on my motherboard. Both the new memory and the previuosly unused ram slots work fine. I have repeatly installed all 4 gig same problem (windows error recovery) and always works fine with either set of in either duel chanels on my motherboard. I have windows vista 64 bit.

Oct 14, 2009I just purchased a new HP desktop, INtel core 2 Quad processor, 64 bit performance with 8gb of ram, 1 Terrabyte hard drive. It came with Vista home premium 64 bit edition. I had previously purchased Vista Ultimate for a laptop that no longer works. When I downloaded Vista Ultimate I put in the 32 bit instead of the 64. I am not able to do a restore to go back to the way I purchased it. I am not very computer savvy. And what would be the down fall for keeping the 32 bit installed (somone had told me I wouldn't be using the full capicity of the computer).
