I just got a new vista computer for my Christmas and everything works perfectly apart from my disc drive. I have a few software cd's that I need to install but when I put the disc in, nothing happens. It doesn't even spin the disc and is not labelled on "My Computer." I don't know what else
View 4 Repliesmy DVD-drive doesn't read disc's. The drive I'm using is TSSTcorp SH-S223Q ATA, so a Samsung DVD-drive. When I bought it, it read fine, but not anymore. It doesn't read even bootable disc's (I tried Vista Ultimate x64). I've tried upgrading firmware from B00 to B03, but it didn't help. I had a similar problem when I bought this computer in August 2008. My DVD-drive read the disc's fine for couple weeks or so and then it stopped working. Then I replaced it with this drive (It's not the same model). This one worked fine for a month or two and stopped working, so it's been couple of months not functioning. I just did a fresh install of Vista yesterday and the problem is still here.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI found my Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance disk and decided to play a bit. It installed fine and I'd ran it before, but then when I tried to run it, the disk would spin and I'd get the loading image. The disk suddenly stops spinning, then the program closes and I get the same old "This program has stopped working..." error. I've tried compatibility modes and running as administrator, but I still have no idea what's wrong.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAs of right now the only way I can get the external drive to spin down is to let it reach the time set to turn off the hard drive (via Vista Power Options) or to turn off the computer. I can tell when the external drive is spun down since the vibrations stop. Also the fan does not cause the vibrations as when it is spun down the air still flows.
1) I originally hard the SATA mode set to IDE, enabled SATA Port0-3 Native Mode and the drivers were from Vista/whatever the intel_chipset_9.1.0.1012 provided. On this motherboard there is no "safely remove" function, similar/exactly like what you normally see with a USB device. Because of this I opted to use HotSwap!. Unfortunately HotSwap! did not spin down the drive after safely hot swapping/removing the hard drive...........
I've had an odd annoying problem for a while now with explorer... it's probably something in the registry but i don't know what. Anyways, here's a screenshot.
View 7 Replies View RelatedBasically my gf's pc started to mess up alot, she was using it at uni with no internet connection but as soon as she finished uni and brought it back and started using the internet it started playng up, so she got it formated, but alas, no vista disc, she still has the product code on a sticker on the PC itself. She has already paid for vista so is there a way of getting the vista disc (for her pc) for free?? if so/if not where can i get one and will this work ok??

I don't know if its only SATA HD but thats what I have and I am experiencing the same thing. It has me concerned that the clicking of the HD arms might be unnecessary wear and tear. any fixes for this?

Considering the fact that slipstreaming isn't possible, I would definitely like to replace my Ultimate retail discs with sp1 discs.
I have had Windows Vista 64 for 2 Months now and of that period of time it worked soundly for about 2 Weeks. I am NOT an irresponsible User, I don't just delete Data, I know a little something about computing, I don't visit or download from dubious sites etc.
1) Without any reason software suddently doesn't work.
a) I installed a Antivirussoftware - after 3 Weeks it suddently didn't work any more (Kaspersky) I couldn't reinstall it.
b) I installed a new Antivirussoftware - after 5 days it didn't work anymore.
c) 4 days later I started to get errormessages "Windows Defender doesn't work any more" - "Windows Hostprocess doesn't work anymore"
After my PC was burned out by lightening through my Broadband connection I
received a new PC from my insurers with Win.Vista Business, but I did not
received (and will not) the Windows Installation CD.
Whilst setting up the new PC with various matters an invitation appeared for
me to make a Windows Recovery disc, but I was too busy with other matters to
do it there and then, so thinking that this invitation will appear again I
cancelled it.
It is now some weeks and the invitation has not reappeared. Which way can I
make the Recovery Disc in case of a crash?
I'm having trouble with the DiscCleanup in Windows Vista. When I try to open cleanmgr.exe for C: it opens for a second but closes fast when it comes to "Setup Log Files" Cleanmgr.exe worked fine for C: before a security update from windows update was installed. Is there a way to fix this?

I bought a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD off ebay (don't laugh), but what I actually got I'm not sure is legal so I'd appreciate some advice before doing the return/refund thing. The disc was advertised as genuine with a product key. When it arrived however this DVD is an obvious copy burnt on a PC, not a factory made disc. There was no product key but a piece of paper with activation instructions. at this url is a picture of the DVD and also a scan of the instructions that came with it. The activation instructions were printed on an A4 piece of paper.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen i bought the laptop the there were 3 partitions, due to the two seperate hard drives, i used Drive C:/ for all of my programs and just school files. Drive D:/ is for music and movies, and E:/ are the standard HP recovery discs that come on the Hard drive. Yesterday when i turned on my computer i got a message telling me i had low disk space on drive D:/. But i don't have that much on it. The day before i still had 160gb free on that drive. It has just all a sudden become filled.
I have run symantec antivirus, windows defender, ad-aware, and ccleaner to try to fix the problem. I have also defragged the drive, and gone in and manually looked at all of the hidden and system protected files. I see no reason that the frive should be full, because all the most i have on that drive is 60gb.
I have a new PC in which I installed Vista Ultimate x64 OS...everything is OK with that OS apart from one thing, ME...I do not like Vista Ultimate at all. I now have a XP Pro x64 CD which I would like to install and use as my ONLY OS. Trouble is that I cannot get the disc to boot. I have tried (in vain) to change my boot sequence in Vista Ultimate x64 and, no matter what I do I cannot get the CD/DVD drive as my 1st boot. If I use f2 (set-up) I cannot even move CD/DVD drive from it's bottom position in the boot sequence list and when I go to f11 to select and enter boot device my optical drive is listed but if I select that my PC seems to ignore this and boots from hdd giving me Vista Ultimate again. I have been with this problem for a couple of weeks now and I decided that it was time to turn to the experts for advice :-)

So I had a virus and long story short I was made to restore my system from the OS Disc that came with my laptop. Somehow I royally screwed things up and deleted my back-up restore drive D. All I have in the Computer Folder is Drive C and the D drive is now my DVD/CD drive. In addition all I had when Windows started up was an icon for the recycle bin. It seems everything is wiped out. I backed-up my personal files but none of the software. So, how can I fix this? How do I create a new back-up restore partition?

I heard that Vista has its own recovery manager to create recover disc. I was looking through all of my files and could not find and I couldn't find it. I found back up option which I don't think is the same. Reason for this is that my Vista CD is behind a furniture that I can not be bothered to move and get it. I just had a new hard drive installed. I am using OS vista Home Premium SP2 64 bit. I am now getting this message "Low Disk Space You are running out of disk space on RECOVERY . To free space on this drive by deleting old or unnecessary files, click here.. "When I "Click here," I am then offered "Disk Cleanup for RECOVERY (D." The Disk Cleanup offers "Office Setup Files" and "Recycle Bin," but both have "0 bytes" so I can't free up space that way.
when I go to my the only folder listed on the is the Recovery and when I click on it it has the HP Invent screen that says: Recovery Partition WARNING!!!! This area of your hard drive(or partition) contains files used for your PC Recovery Do not Delete or alter these files Any changes to this partition could prevent any recovery later. There are no files listed that I can see, so don't know what is actually on there, and I want to back this up to my external hard drive.
Ive just had a strange one where my pc wouldn't boot up, it stayed flashing stating "boot from cd". I managed to sort it out but its worrying me incase it happens again as i don't have a windows disc (it wasn't supplied with pc when originally purchased) I upgraded my pc to vista with disc but i dont' have a boot disc, i know you can create them yourself but i haven't a clue how to do it.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI once used a set of recovery disc that i got from hp. time went by, i decided to use the disc again, only after i used them, my computer would start up with a black screen and the cursor, then a message said windows have not been install, please try re-install windows. i tried it again same thing, when i restarted my laptop to hit f11, no luck. i have search the net looking for an answer, no luck, then i found recovery disk from neosmart. i downloaded that tried to do a start up repair to see if thats the problem, didn't work, so i next-ed tried to do a system restore, restored to a point, still the same problem, i also tried a diagnostic tool, no help at all. now im thinking i just have to re-install vista completely, but i dont want to pay for it again.
