Dec 8, 2006
Do you need to change your product key so you can activate Windows Vista or Windows 7 properly? You can use a great command line tool that will help you do this very easily. Just follow these steps:
Click on the Start Button and type in command prompt so that it shows up on your start menu search list. Right click on the Command Prompt shortcut and select Run As Administrator.....

Don't feel like typing in your product key before installing Windows Vista? It is now possible to install any version of Windows Vista and use it for 14 days before having to enter a product key and activating it.
While on the product key screen during install, just hit the Next button. You will be presented with a new screen ....

Well when I bought it, I tryed to get Windows onto my Laptop and did. But then I had to Defrag my whole Computer and the little sticker that was on the bottom of my Laptop with the Windows Info came off and then my Mother cleaned my room and she threw away the sticker. So I could not Activate windows. Now my 30 days are almost up and my Questions are....
1. is there a way to Activate windows without the Product Key? I have the Receipt when I bought the Laptop, and the box it came in and all the papers as well.
or
2. Get a new Product key without spending another $100 USD For Windows Again.

I apologize if this issue has already been addressed elsewhere. I have a problem though. I have a computer that was custom built about 6 years ago and was installed with Windows XP Professional edition. I decided last night that it was time to reformat the hard drive on the computer and take it back to normal. I went to reinstall XP using the original disk that came with the computer. Unfortunately, I failed to think ahead and it got to the screen where I have to input the Product ID code that was originally located on the Disk sleeve, which of course I no longer have. I've read several suggestions online about accessing the code through the computer, but they all sound really complicated and I can't get into the computer anyway because of the midinstallation stalling. Shouldn't there be a record with Microsoft that I can access online from another computer from when I registered my copy years ago when I bought it? That would be so much simpler.

I have a DVD that enables me to select any Vista 64 version that I choose based on product key. By mistake I entered the key for "Enterprise" when I wanted "Ultimate". The Enterprise version does not include Media Center and I just want to add Windows Media Center without uninstalling and reinstalling the OS. The install CD will not let me upgrade.
Are there any Registry tweeks I can do to turn on Media Center or change the install to Ultimate?

I currently have Vista Home Premium. If I do an upgrade to Windows 7 I understand that Windows 7 will deactivate the Vista product key. OK, so in the future, if I have to reload Windows 7 because I have replaced the hard drive, how do I reload Windows 7 using the upgrade DVD?

I recently received a new computer with all new parts that had Windows XP Media Center Edition on it. I had my copy of the upgrade disc for Windows Vista Home Premium and wanted to upgrade. Well now Windows is telling me that my Product ID has expired and when I try to re-enter the ID it says it is not valid, even though it is a legitimate copy of Windows Vista. I did have this installed on another computer but then reverted back to XP for other reasons. Is there any way to get my system registered without buying another product key?

Is it possible to purchase a windows vista home basic product key on line? I'd like to validate an illegal installation (inherited). Couldn't see the facility on the MS web site. Or would I be better just to go to the store and buy the package (solely for the product key)

I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.

*My laptop came with Vista Home Premium installed.* I downloaded a Flash-BIOS update as per advice of my HP Care Centre. After it was done installing my laptop shut off (as I was told it would do). When I turned it back on, I was prompted to enter a Product Activation Key. I entered the Windows Product Key as shown on the sticker on the base of the laptop. The message I received was "The Windows Vista Home Premium product key you typed is invalid for activation" For the record, YES, I am entering the code in properly.

I've heard conflicting reports as to whether Office 2000 will run successfully under Vista. In the hope that they are compatible, I installed Office 2000 and then installed (from the Microsoft site) updates SR-1a and SP-2. Then I downloaded SP3, but when I attempted to install it, I got the message "The expected version of the product was not found on your system." Is there some reason for this, or should I just try again? I looked for, but could not find, a newsgroup that deals with Office 2000 -- is there an alternative newsgroup that would be better for these questions?

I am using windows live and need to change my password. I know how to do it but when i go to properties and servers and change it, it doesn't work. I still can only log in with the old password. Someone else has access to my emails so just locking my computer is not an option because they can access my emails from their computer. So annoying! Outlook express was so much better than live mail.

My Windows Explorer has had the most annoying set of attributes, ever since I got Vista and I can't find a way to change them. When I open a folder, the files always want to default to a large icon view with a preview screen. I change them by customizing the folder and they sometimes change back. Some folders aren't customizable at all. Every folder is defaulted to be a pictures folder, but I want all folders to be just files.
If I want a pictures folder, of which I only have a few, I should be able to set only those folders as pictures. The windows folders don't need a Rating column or a Date Taken column. I want the details. My C: drive and Windows folder views are unchangeable other than manually setting the columns on and off. Then they change right back. Where can I change the default view of all folders?

I cannot use or change the settings of Windows Update in any way. I've tried reinstalling the Windows Update Agent, but nothing changes. I have found no way of uninstalling it either. This alone is not the biggest problem, but the program has set itself to default and downloads hundreds of MB's of useless updates daily, which forces me to wait 30 minutes before the laptop turns on, and another 10 minutes of "reverting changes" because they "were not configured properly". Is there any way to fix this besides reformatting or reinstalling the OS? Install missing files? Somehow disable the agent? Uninstall it?
