My wife has just bought a laptop and has been playing the included "Hearts" game that comes with Vista Basic. I have set so that her name -Pat- appears as the key player in the game but for no apparent reason sometimes she becomes 'User' and Pat is not shown on the screen. There is nothing I can see to cause this but advice from one of you knowledgeable people out and might keep me out of the doghouse.
The screen in the picture below has shown up twice. Once upon awakening from sleep and once while reading a document in Firefox. The only cure is to press and hold the on/off button until the system powers down. Windows says that I have the most current video driver. What else can I check before sending it back to HP? Picture taken with my iPhone in a dimly lit room.
After installing the new 8.12 ATI drivers i cant start Catalyst Control Centre. I can see it running in task manager but it just wont show on the screen. This has happened with previous drivers and i had to re-install CCC few times for it to work.
Sent my computer off to diagnose a program on the weekend. I was told some start up programs were taken off. Now when i turn on the computer it does the usual windows logo animation and instead of going to the log on screen it loads up the account straight away. I am the only user but still want the machine locked so i have to enter a password to log on. Just wondering if it needs to be added to the start up list or something to get it to start as normal again??
I've been searching through the forum's tutorials and all through Google to find out how to change the size of the user picture in the login screen. I don't have a password set to my account and I am currently the only one with an account on the computer, so the picture is very small on my 22" 1680*1050 monitor.
Whenever someone in my family walks away from using the computer with Windows Vista, after the Screen Saver, I'm always taken to a screen that allows only the last user to log back in, but when someone else wants to log in, they need to hit the "Switch User" button to go back to the regular login screen. Can I have the computer just go back to showing all the user's names (so I don't have to click the "Switch User" button to login as me). I would like this to work, just as XP did... so if the last person who used the computer has to log back in, s/he would just have to click their name again...just like XP did.
All new accounts I create on Vista home premium do not login properly. When a user logs in the explorer.exe process does not start (the user just sees blank blue screen). It is possible to launch the task manager and start processes by hand. I found a suggestion on another post that said there was an incorrect "Shell" registry entry that could be the cause of the problem, but that was not the case here. The Shell key is correctly set to "explorer.exe". If the users log in under safe mode, the desktop loads correctly.

Every time I get one of those UAC prompts asking me to authorize an administrative action my LCD screen flashes when the box pops up. This is caused by the switch to the secure desktop, similar to what happens when you hit CTRL + ALT + DELETE. The only difference is that the background is a snapshot of your desktop that gives it the effect that it is just a pop up window. Although if you look carefully you will notice it is static since the clock does not change and anything else that was animated is now static. The secure desktop provides an extra level of security to UAC by making it immune to any application that may try to automate the click on the allow button bypassing the purpose of UAC.
This sounds like a great thing but it is really annoying to me. I hate that screen flicker. Rather than disable UAC, there is a better alternative. Instead, I can just disable the secure desktop switch that causes the flicker. I know this is not as secure but it is better than disabling UAC completely.Â
Follow the steps below to disable UAC secure desktop: ...
I've read that SP1 has been made available through Windows Update but when I go there it does not show as available. Running Vista Ultimate 32 on my computer, full retail. Has it only been rolled out to some users at this point?
i have just recieved a toshiba satalite pro, i have put a 1gb ram upgrade in but in control panel and bios it still only shows 1gb not 2gb i have swaped the original one with the new one in case it was faulty but it works
My desktop doesn't show upon startup in VistaHome Premium. Only a blank screen and the windows explorer is shown. I have to manually go into task manager and runtask "explorer.exe" to show my desktop. I ran a scan using NOD32 antivirus software and there wasn't any virus.
My 10 month old computer is showing 98% full on "C" drive (64.4 GB installed, 1.41 GB left) I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic. I'm just very confused as to why it is almost full when I hardly have anything on it yet. I've cleaned it up the best I can and deleted all that I think I can and I've defragmented after-with little or no change.
I am having an issue with the hd 4350 card. I read on another post that re-installing windows solved the problem however I have an on-board video unlike the said poster. Problem: Device manager only lists the on-board display adapter, not the 4350. Heres the funny thing, When I run my diag program (pasted below) the 4350 is actually listed. I did RMA the first one I received and was disappointed to see the replacement doing the same thing. Anyway the reason for this post is to find any other possible solutions before I go an re-install windows. Wiping my puter is really the last resort for me but at this point RMA is no longer the issue.
am using Vista Home Premium on a 9 mo. old eMachine...and want to know: How can I get the clock on my taskbar to shown the seconds along with the hour and minute?
how can I stop the full email addresses of individuals, being shown on mail I send to multiple recipients. Office outlook has the facility to edit this but I can't seem to do this on mail.
I have had a new vista desktop for about 6 weeks. It is hooked directly into a Linksys router which in turn hooked to my DSL modem. I also have a laptop on the network connected wirelessly. For the first few weeks, whenever I clicl on network I see three icons--one for the desktop, one for the laptop and one for the router. Acouple of weeks ago I noticed that now there is only an icon for the desktop and for the laptop. I have rebooted several times and then run the network utility but the router ceases to show up. The router works as both pc's have internet access and both pc's share files ok.
I have in the desktop folder of my computer several files and shortcuts. One of them is called 'Internet Explorer'. But the icon corresponding to that name doesn't appear in the desktop!
When i delete files and pictures to my recycle bin, it never shows anything in there but its thereb to empty it, how can i change settings to show files that i put into bin.
I can't uninstall apps shown on Add/Remove programs nor can I update to SP2 for Office 2007. Same error code 2203. This has been going on for quite a while. Using Vista Ultimate. I'm willing to completely re-install Vista but have issues I think because I started out with XP with free upgrade to Vista Home. Then I purchased the upgrade to Vista Ultimate. So I don't have a new installation version of Vista to install as new. Same would apply to Office 2007: I only have the upgrade CD. How can I fix the uninstall/install/2203 problem? (The supposed fix for Windows Installer also fails with the same error code) Or alternatively, how can I do a complete new install of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007?
I just added 1 GB of memory to my computer bringing my memory up to 1280 according to Vista and after I restarted the computer and everything loaded I noticed that the Task Manager is showing a different amount of available memory then what the system information is showing. Task Manager was showing that I only had 15 MB of memory free I knew that something was wrong so I went to the system information in the system tools menu and it showed I had 800 MB of memory available.
We have outlook 2003 on several pc's and all attachments come through fine. We got 2 new pc's with this p.o.s. Vista home premium on them and they come with Windows Mail (formerly outlook). Well, hardly any attachments come through with Windows Mail, while outlook 2003 is working just fine. The help file on Windows mail says to go Tools, Options, Security, and to uncheck the boxes that keep attachments from opening. I have done this, and of course, it doesnt work. Messages continue to come through without any attachments on Windows Mail, while the the pc's with outlook are just fine. Most attachments in any kind of file format don't come through. We are particularly concerned with PDF files which we need more than anything else.
I d/l 18 parts of VHD format of vista. However the Vista.part06.rar is shown corrupt while installation.I d/l thrice but of no avail. Whom to contact or write?
I have purchased a new computer with Intel Dual Core 1.6 GHz, 256 MB Nvidia card, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB SATA HDD. My rating index is shown as 3.0 even though I have updated it several times. Also, available physical memory is also shown just above 300 MB. Is anything needs to be updated, I am unable to understand what is going wrong here.
I am puzzled. The Indexed locations shown when I press the show all locations button are Microsoft Outlook Start Menu and Users. Only Microsoft Outlook is checked. I was trying out the search facility above the start button on Vista to look for a program and was very surprised when up popped a selection of files that are stored on an external hard drive that I use from time to time as a secondary backup. The files shown have not been accessed recently and at the time of the search the external drive was not connected. Hovering the cursor over the files told me that they were located on this external drive. why these files would have shown up on the search as I have not chosen to have the external drive indexed?
