My desktop doesn't show upon startup in VistaHome Premium. Only a blank screen and the windows explorer is shown. I have to manually go into task manager and runtask "explorer.exe" to show my desktop. I ran a scan using NOD32 antivirus software and there wasn't any virus.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having problems with Vista on my parents office computer, and i'm trying to keep from having to reinstall everything! I've looked all over google trying to find other peeps with the same problem, but I still havn't found a solution. The computer is an HP Pavilion, with Vista Home Premium. While starting up, after the welcome screen, it takes me to my desktop. All I can see is the curser and the background. It's as if explorer.exe will not start.
I can't start explorer.exe, because ctrl,alt,dlt, will not work at all. I've tried this in safe mode also, but it yields the same results. I've also gone into command prompt and checked the regedit to see if the shell or w/e for explorer.exe was screwed up, but everything looks fine there. And regedit is the only thing I have been able to start in command prompt, system restore and explorer.exe will not start from there, well, they will start but they will not display at all. Its like everything is running in the background.
Yesterday my computer was working perfectly, however when i started my computer up today the screen was completely black and all i had was a mouse, luckily i was able to start task manager and then run programs. I assumed this was a one time vista glitch but just in case, i ran an anti-virus that came out negative. I expected things to be resolved if i restarted my computer, but when i restarted it the same thing, so i restarted one more time, and to my discontent, this time there was not even a mouse, so now i have to write this from vista safe mode in order to access my computer. Attached is my dxdiag if you need to see it.

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to load vista it seems to be loading fine, but will stop once the icons start filling the taskbar. Sometimes I can try and run a program, but the start bar will freeze and the program will not load, however most of the time it will just freeze before this. It's taking a really long time to even get onto the desktop screen as well. The computer loads fine in Safe Mode (which is where I am typing this from). I have tried startup repair and it says there are no errors, tried to do a bootlog but I don't know where Windows writes the file to(although from a quick search, it appears it's not much use anyway) and I've tried system restore which completed correctly, but did not solve my problem. I actually had this problem a little while ago, and had to reinstall my system from the Dell backup, however I've just moved into digs at Uni and of course all the stuff I would want to reinstall is at home, not to forget that it takes so long. Spec is: Dell Studio 1555 Laptop, Dual Core T4200 Processor @ 2GHz, 4GB RAM, 512MB ATI mobility Radeon HD 4570, running Vista Home Premium 64Bit on SP2

I went into the registry and deleted the item from the startup tab and I also disabled it in the startup tab. The startup tab still shows the item even though it is disabled and deleted from the registry. Why does it still show in MSCONFIG and how do I delete it from the start up entry

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy 10 month old computer is showing 98% full on "C" drive (64.4 GB installed, 1.41 GB left) I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic. I'm just very confused as to why it is almost full when I hardly have anything on it yet. I've cleaned it up the best I can and deleted all that I think I can and I've defragmented after-with little or no change.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am having an issue with the hd 4350 card. I read on another post that re-installing windows solved the problem however I have an on-board video unlike the said poster. Problem: Device manager only lists the on-board display adapter, not the 4350. Heres the funny thing, When I run my diag program (pasted below) the 4350 is actually listed. I did RMA the first one I received and was disappointed to see the replacement doing the same thing. Anyway the reason for this post is to find any other possible solutions before I go an re-install windows. Wiping my puter is really the last resort for me but at this point RMA is no longer the issue.

The only cure is to press and hold the on/off button until the system powers down. Windows says that I have the most current video driver. What else can I check before sending it back to HP? I have set so that her name -Pat- appears as the key player in the game but for no apparent reason sometimes she becomes 'User' and Pat is not shown on the screen. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have had a new vista desktop for about 6 weeks. It is hooked directly into a Linksys router which in turn hooked to my DSL modem. I also have a laptop on the network connected wirelessly. For the first few weeks, whenever I clicl on network I see three icons--one for the desktop, one for the laptop and one for the router. Acouple of weeks ago I noticed that now there is only an icon for the desktop and for the laptop. I have rebooted several times and then run the network utility but the router ceases to show up. The router works as both pc's have internet access and both pc's share files ok.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI can't uninstall apps shown on Add/Remove programs nor can I update to SP2 for Office 2007. Same error code 2203. This has been going on for quite a while. Using Vista Ultimate. I'm willing to completely re-install Vista but have issues I think because I started out with XP with free upgrade to Vista Home. Then I purchased the upgrade to Vista Ultimate. So I don't have a new installation version of Vista to install as new. Same would apply to Office 2007: I only have the upgrade CD. How can I fix the uninstall/install/2203 problem? (The supposed fix for Windows Installer also fails with the same error code) Or alternatively, how can I do a complete new install of Vista Ultimate and Office 2007?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just added 1 GB of memory to my computer bringing my memory up to 1280 according to Vista and after I restarted the computer and everything loaded I noticed that the Task Manager is showing a different amount of available memory then what the system information is showing. Task Manager was showing that I only had 15 MB of memory free I knew that something was wrong so I went to the system information in the system tools menu and it showed I had 800 MB of memory available.

however, on the system summary under system information it only shows 3.99 Gb of TOTAL Physical memory.
Why is vista not able to recognize the full 12 Gb ? I thought the 64-bit OS was supposed to recognize up to 128 Gb. Any ideas???
My motherboard is an ASUS P6T Deluxe Intel X58, CPU= Intel Core i7 Extreme 965(4x 3.2 GHz;8MB L3 Cache).
We have outlook 2003 on several pc's and all attachments come through fine. We got 2 new pc's with this p.o.s. Vista home premium on them and they come with Windows Mail (formerly outlook). Well, hardly any attachments come through with Windows Mail, while outlook 2003 is working just fine. The help file on Windows mail says to go Tools, Options, Security, and to uncheck the boxes that keep attachments from opening. I have done this, and of course, it doesnt work. Messages continue to come through without any attachments on Windows Mail, while the the pc's with outlook are just fine. Most attachments in any kind of file format don't come through. We are particularly concerned with PDF files which we need more than anything else.

My rating index is shown as 3.0 even though I have updated it several times. Also, available physical memory is also shown just above 300 MB. Is anything needs to be updated, I am unable to understand what is going wrong here.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am puzzled. The Indexed locations shown when I press the show all locations button are Microsoft Outlook Start Menu and Users. Only Microsoft Outlook is checked. I was trying out the search facility above the start button on Vista to look for a program and was very surprised when up popped a selection of files that are stored on an external hard drive that I use from time to time as a secondary backup. The files shown have not been accessed recently and at the time of the search the external drive was not connected. Hovering the cursor over the files told me that they were located on this external drive. why these files would have shown up on the search as I have not chosen to have the external drive indexed?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just puchased my first Windows Vista computer - an HP laptop. I have purchased at leat five laptops since 2000 so I am familiar with setup and
comfortable with installations etc. I have three questions here.
1. My last computer had Windows XP and an 80 gb hard drive with 70 gb full - After copying the data only (55 GB) to my new 250 gb hard drive I have only 107 GB remaining of the 222 GB C drive partition. I have not yet added many programs. That tells me that Vista must be using 50-60 GB or more of the drive. Can that be correct?
2. My new computer takes 5-6 minutes to start up. After two minutes I get the welcome screen. Then the monitor goes black for a full two minutes before continuing the startup process. Is this normal for Vista?
3. Occasionally the monitor goes dark for a few seconds and a window pops up saying the display driver has failed but is back. Is this normal?
I certainly gained no speed with this new computer. There are many things I like about Vista. Since I have no previous experience with owning it I am trying to sort out if this computer is a lemon that should be returned or if I should just put up with the downside.
The last couple of days I had a few times a startup error. It said something like Windows couldn't start normally. Run Startup Recovery (Recommended) Start Windows Normally. I did the Startup Recovery and then it worked again but the next day or so the same thing, otherwise my system runs fine.
