A few days ago I had to do a recovery to restore my laptop to the way it was when it left the factory. When I had finished the recovery and everything was working, the computer started to gradually get slower and slower the longer it was being used for. It eventually gets to the point where everything freezes and all windows or programs show "Not Responding" and it takes ages to close them down. When the computer is restarted, it is fine for a while, then gradually the same thing happens. I noticed the the CPU usage was over 50% while the computer was doing nothing except running. Please someone give me some idea of what's wrong,
i have 2 computers both gateways.one is a e-4200 xp home edition and the other is a 819 gm xp media center. i took the recovery disk from the media center and put it on my e-4200 computer thinking it would speed it up. well i was wrong. and now i want to take it off and i don't no how .i have been working on it for 2 days and i am still at the same spot where i was when i started. does any one no what i can do to resolve this probleam. i do not have the recovery disk for the e-4200 computer to restore it back .

This system had loads of problems by the time i got it to "fix" it wont system restore - they have all been deleted, BSOD, serious error recovery every other start, viruses, spyware by the ton.Simple start would be to try a repair, if that doesnt work total reinstall as i just cant be bothered with it.Problem is the Fujitsu Siemens recovery disc when used from windows states the serial is incorrect. The sticker on the box states "Win XP Media center Edition 2005".The Fujitsu Siemens Recovery CD states "Win XP Home Edition-SP2".Now unless there is some "Trick" that im not aware of it isn't ever going to work! so Fujitsu Siemens sent the wrong disc with the system and it only now when its needed that i realise they are wrong! The system probably isn't in warranty and Fujitsu Siemens don't allow any form of Email support.
Hoping to avoid a full reinstall of Windows XP, I'd like to try some repair procedures. The problem is, when I launch my "Vaio PCV-RS430G" recovery disc it goes straight to Sony's proprietary recovery interface which provides ONLY the preset option to wipe my 'c' drive and reinstall Windows. According to some MS articles I've read, an XP recovery disc should allow me to access the Windows Recovery Console (by typing "R" at the welcome screen). Can anyone suggest how I can bypass the Sony recovery and get to the Windows Recovery Console?
I had a Dell with XP Media Center Edition on it and I am going to make a new build. My question is, can I use the XP Media Center RECOVERY CD that came with the dell if I were to have a new CD KEY?
Trying to recover my registry from being corrupted. I am in Windows XP Pro recovery console. But when I try At the Recovery Console command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line: md tmp copy c:windowssystem32 configsystem c:windows mpsystem.bak. It says I cannot copy the file. The file cannot be copied.
When I use Sfc within Windows 2000 pro the first message is Insert your Windows 2000 Professional CD now I insert the CD and then the message turns up the CD you provided is the wrong CD The CD is the one I just used to install the O/S. Another reason given in the message under more information is - the CD drive may not be working which it is.
We downloaded, by mistake I quickly learned, a online security suite from our ISP. With much help,we did a system restore but since, I can't save my passwords & sign in on my favorite forums etc. I have clicked auto complete in tools, options, content but it still keeps deleting the cookies w/o me doing it? Any words of wisdom or direction would be helpful. Can email me at bonjer94@rogers.com too.
I tried the Restore XP Login Screen online tool. It checked my registry and pronounced things to be okay. The problem is that the screen itself is wrong. The malware (?) theme that was installed has replaced the default blue Welcome screen with its own. I found and deleted part of the problem, but the unwelcome ''welcome/login'' screen remains. If someone could just tell me where that Welcome/Login screen is kept and what its name is, I should be able to replace it with the correct default file.
My brother-in-law has been having nothing but trouble with his older WinXP machine, so he reinstalled the WinXP with SP2 included. Apparently, he inadvertently installed it to his back-up drive (D) rather than his main drive (C). Everything is working beauifully now. When he boots up the machine, it asks which drive he wants to boot from. He says D and off they go. The problem is that the D drive is only 5GB, of which about 850MB is left. I think he also reinstalled drivers and programs to the D drive.
I have a peer to peer workgroup lan at home; and all the pc's are in win2k pro; well, i was trying to setup win2k pro on a new pc for my niece; i use tuneup utilities and in the options screen for automatic logon, it shows the computerid as the domain name; thinking that i m not in a domain, i changed the value to workgroup and now windows cant let me log back in, even in safe mode; how can i get to a screen where i can change the domain name to what it should be? the login screen only shows username and password fields.
I have a Dell desktop computer with Windows XP. Everything had been working fine, up until 2 days ago. On Tuesday, I turned on my computer like usual and I noticed that my monitor was not normal. I could not see anything on my desktop. It was black. And also, the power button was blinking green every 3 seconds and would not stop, until I actually removed the plug from the surge protector. Yesterday the same thing happened when I turned on my computer, but today, when I turned it on, I could see my desktop and the power button was normal green and not blinking. I was happy, until I moved the mouse and the cursor was frozen. Now, it seems like my desktop monitor is fine, but my mouse isn't normal? I unplugged the mouse from the tower and plugged it back in, cleaned out the mouse, and it's still frozen.
Recently I had a power outage in my dorm. My computer was on standby mode when it happened. The computer booted normally when the power came back and it ran fine. Then I put the computer in standby mode again because I had to go somewhere. I come back and resume from standby and instead of normally booting to the windows password log on screen, the computer restarts. Also, the LED light on my case that normally blinks on and off during standby, blinks briefly for the first few seconds and then disappears. This never happened before.
I have tried rebooting and shutting down the computer, but every time I go to standby and resume from standby, it restarts and then goes the windows log on screen. I have no idea what is going on. This problem did not happen before the power outage.
When I open mspaint always opened with "my documents". For no known reason it started opening with "My Pictures". How can I change the which file I want it to open with?
when i load my laptop, below is how it looks. my icons are wrong, they don't have names - right click doesn't show information and my start bar is out of whack. to resolve it i just reselect windows xp theme. - though again, every time i restart the laptop i'm in the same situation..it has seemed to move over to some of my browsers, it seems like only firefox will work - and some things are still off. for instance the images below - the game was loaded in ff w/ ie tab extension, and google chrome - and the Internet video has been loaded in ff
Yesterday i was adding some new "keys" on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREClassesDirectoryshell to add the option " open in a new window" while clicking on a folder with the right button.I did something wrong and now when i double click on a folder it can't open and windows "search" appears instead. What can i do to open again folders with the double click?
I was trying to do a clean install with my Sister's PC because she messed it up so badly with adwares, spywares, and what-not.First, I tried to boot the XP Home cd but it didn't work. I don't even know if it's bootable?anyways, then I tried installing from Windows itself, which I later read was something I shouldn't have done. The install was going well, then it rebooted the PC. Now, I see an option to boot the XP cd.Specifically, before, I only had options to boot Windows XP Home and go into the Windows Recovery Console.I chose the XP setup and tried to delete the C: drive, but it said I couldn't. Then, I tried to delete the D: drive, and it worked. I tried once again to delete the C: drive to no prevail. So, I thought I'd restart the PC to see if it would change. And then it happened. It didn't start up with the XP setup option nor does it boot Windows. It just loops inself to the Windows XP Home logo, restart, rinse and repeat.
Windows XP Fully Updated Problem:When my computer boots up to the login screen it automatically puts in Administrative as the log in name and tries to log in. When i have only 1 login (dennis) as the administrative account. So the example here would be 2 Account, Dennis and Administrative (Administrative one does not exist). As the computer boots up it is trying to log in to the administrative. Now when i am in the windows xp login, i hang here because of this. When im in the classic i get the automatic message that incorrect login message. Then would have to retype out which user to use to log in.
I have been having a problem with a CD burner program attempting to install when I "right" click on one of my drives (A, C, D, E, or F) from the My Computer screen. An install application comes up and wants me to insert a disc so a program can install. What I want to do is get to the properties tab so I can see how much I have on the C drive.I am sure there is another way to do that so my real problem is in correcting whatever is causing this install to start whenever I right click on one of the drives.I have right clicked on other icons on the desktop and that functions properly, as well as two folders in the My Computer "folder".
I looking for a way to make sure my Operation System is working correctly? I have a recovery disc for Windows XP PRO, but it says that it will wipe out all of my upgrades if I use it?Is there a Service Pack 2 Recovery File that I can download to a My desktop, and then burn to a CD?
I lost my system recovery disc. I also lost all of my games that came with windows...free cell, solitaire, paint..etc. I just want those back. Can I run a system recovery program on windows without a disc
when i turned my on my pc everything was fine, i update and ran "ad-awareSE" to check my pc, it remove 3 files, finished.
then i launch "disk clean up" which is provided my windows orignally, to clean up my pc, i select everything on the list and i click ok so it would start removing the files, but then something strange happened.
as 'disk clean up' starts cleaning my system i noticed it's taking alot longer than usual, then all of a sudden a horrifying message pops up:
warning: system files found in windows have been change or have been replace by an unknown source, current system files are unstable and will cause stability issues, please insert "WINDOWS XP installation cd" into a cd rom drive, set up will fresh replace current files with ones from windows xp cd.-----
i click cancel and it warns me that my system will become unstable, no more warning message have pop up UNTIL i launch "disk clean up" again, i once again select everything in the list and click ok so it could began cleaning my system.
then the same message pops up again.
i decided to do what it tells me, i took out my windows XP SP2 cd, put it in the cd rom drive, and soon windows start reading the cd WHILE disk clean up starts cleaning my system.
there's no message telling me that windows is repairing my system files, all i see is "disc clean up" cleaning my pc AND AT THE SAME TIME my cd rom drive is reading my winXP cd.
after it's all over, i tdidn't tell me to restart my pc, but i did anyway and after that i ran 'disk clean up' and i didn't notice anything strange in windows, i ran 'disk clean up' again, and there was no more warning message, i ran disk cleanup for a few more times and everything was ok.
i first thought maybe it was because of a hacker attacking my pc and messing up my system files, but that's not possible becasue i activated "block traffic" in norton firewall 2005, plus i already updated norton antivirius 2005 with the latest definition, and use ad-aware to remove all tracs of spyware, so really, what what happen back then, what's wrong with my pc? how can i solve this?
I have 2 HDD's in my computer, both partitioned up.In the 2nd HDD the first partition is 30gb, however windows reports it as total size 5GB, free space 4.75GB, I know that is wrong cause more than 5GB of data is on the drive. Disk defragementer shows it as: Capacity: 5GB Free Space: 5.22GB % Free Space: 104% Disk Management still shows the partition as 30gb, but how can I fix how windows sees it? (I'm worried that defragger might lose data as there is limited free space on it, and as its reporting space as 104%, it wont flag up a low space warning (15% and lower).
I had some freezing on my Dell notebook due to a updated driver that froze the machine. After wits end I decided to perform a repair from the the XP pro disc. My brand new Dell computer has the wrong time in the system tray. I have checked to make sure that I am in the correct time zone, (pacific time), but it is two hours off. Can I fix this myself or do I have to call Dell?
