Wont Boot - Computer Does Not Have Enough Memory
Feb 1, 2005
I got a machine here-its a presario 5190. It has 2 instances of XP installed, and it wont boot to either one. The owner said he tried to install a printer, and then when he rebooted, it got caught in a loop, and just contnues to restart itself. It wont start in safe mode, and it wont start with the last known good configuration. I tried a repair install, but that didnt seem to work either. It just reboots endlessly, right after XP starts loading. I suspect the computer does not have enough memory for XP. I believe XP requires a minium of 256MB, and I believe this has only 192 MB RAM. I believe that the best option is to reformat, and install Win 98. The guy that owns this even have it on the internet-just uses it for his trip planner.

I have a white box Pentium 4 CPU with XP professional service pack 2 build 2600 installed. The motherboard is an intel D865GLC with 512 MB RAM installed in Dual channel mode with 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 1 and 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 2. This memory is dual channel compatible. I tried to add another 2 sticks of the same type ram but from a different manufacturer.
Here's the problem: I can use any 2 of the 4 sticks of ram together, both from the same manufacturer or 1 from 1 manufacturer and 1 from the other for a total of 512 MB. Everything works fine. I can place one stick in slot 0 of bank 1 and the other in slot 0 of bank 2 or I can place 1 in slot 1 bank 1 and 1 in slot 1 of bank 2 with no problems. I can even place a 3rd stick of the same type ram in any open slot and all's fine (except the machine complains that this is not an optimal memory setup). Memtest86 reports no errors with any of the above configurations

well, I managed to screw up my winxp reinstall in a big way. I'm very upset over it since its my sis-in-laws computer. Before, she could not access the internet, but at least she could boot up WinXP and play games, access her email and all of her programs on the desktop...now...nothing but the following popup error message:
Error: One of the files containing the system registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was successful
then the popup disappears and sends me to a blue screen (long) message starting with this:
A problem has been detected and windows bios has been shut down to prevent damage

Im currently in the process of bringing my PC back from the brink. St present I am unable to boot because a system32/hal.dll is not present. Before this I was unable to boot without seeing a blue screen showing a lack of memory. I have been having problems for a few weeks now. At first just a little slow down and the occassional crash, but it has recently escalated to large scale slow down and fatal errors causing the pc to reboot. From the performances menu in Task Manager I can see large large CPU usage peaks with the processor running at 100% consistantly with no programs running. Simil;arly, on startup the PF usage is settled around 200MB but gradually increases over a matter of minutes until it is 2 or 3 GB+. This is usually about when the system declares a fatal error and reboots itself.
The only process that appears to be taking processor power at these points is svchost, that will usually run between 0-1%. I have been aprehensive to end this though as I know it to be a core process. I also had similar problems with lsass.exe. I researched and figured it could be the Welchia Worm or MSBLAST.D virus but have found no trace with any anti virus software. I tried the suggested treatments regardless with no success. A couple of days ago the problems got to the point where no prgrams would open and the system rebooted every few minutes. I managed to rectify this by reinstalling windows, but it appears to have been short lived. Now, after a fatal error the PC has been unable to reboot.

I recently just built this computer so its still all pretty much brand new. Im not really sure what is making it reboot but it seems like im always playing a game when it decides to do it. After somone else suggesting it was the ram i decided to check my ram with memtest86+ and during the scan my computer rebooted itself pointing that it was prolly the ram. So now i am using my old ram while the other 2 gigs is bein sent back for return and the computer rebooted itself on my old memory so now im pretty sure its not the ram. I understand that it could be numerous things such as a loose wire, drivers, crack in motherboard but it would be nice if the problem could be determined or atleast narrowed down.

I bought my Dell Inspiron 9300 (1.86 Ghz Centrino, 1.0 GB RAM, running Windows XP Media Center Edition [stupid, I know that now]) in August of last year. It was really high-end then, the idea being that by the time I finish college it will still be... enh, adequate.Upon installing Google Toolbar and adding the System Monitor gadget, I discovered that even when I have just turned the thing on it's using over 60% of its memory (RAM). If I am using Yahoo! Widget Engine, that figure jumps to anywhere between 67% and 80%. This is rather unsettling, because the computer has 1 GB of RAM. How can my computer, at rest, be using over 600 MB of RAM? Is there a way I can take that down?

The computer is slow to load windows 2000. Takes several mintues to connect to the net. Message showing that "Virtual Memory is low". Have gone into "My computer" - then "advanced options" and increased virtual memory to 1500. There is a good amount of space on the disc. But actions made no difference and still get the message that the virtual memory is low. Speed of computer has not improved. Will try "System restore".

I am running Windows XP on a Quad core with 3 Gigs of RAM. I am a musician and use the computer for recirding and mixing. My computer was upgraded a mere 6 months ago and has not had performance issues. However, in the last month I have noticed it slowing down with the hard drive working very hard. Now things are even worse. I cannot load sound samples such as drums as the computer keeps claiming that it is out of memory.I have run adaware and Spybot for spyware. I have defragged, virus checked all to no avail. One thing I should mention is that my two data drives are very low in memory.

I have heaps of space on my hard drive, have defragged etc. Got windows XP and SP2. In system info it says I have about 30MB available memory out of 256MB. This doesn't change much if I disable start up stuff in msconfig. In task manager I have 29 processes running leaving 62144 available physical memory out of 196080. From other messages here this doesn't seem like too many processes running.

I have windowsXP-home. I have dial-up. My computer has been consistently slowing down. It starts out new like it is supposed to but as time goes on it gets slower and slower. If I take it to my son's who has Wi-Fi it works fast but as soon as I get back to dial-up it is slow. You can hear it grinding away trying to get moving. I even took it to a computer place and had them restore everything and it didn't help. They said it didn't act up for them. I switched from Explorer to Firefox and for awhile it was faster. But now it is getting slower again. Once in a while I will get the message that my virtual memory is low and it is adding to it. I have very little on my computer, my hard drive size says 37.2 GB and my free space is 27.0 GB. I have a few pictures but not alot. I only have 1 game added. I use Spybot and I recently got RegCure hoping that it would fix my registry if there was a problem there.

The memory runs out on my computer when I open additional windows on my PC and I have 512 MB of RAM. I use internet explorer 6 and with windows xp home edition. Then I have to use Disc Cleanup to get more space by compressing old files and deleting temporary files. I cannot even run this utility when the windows are open and I cannot close windows sometimes so I have to shut down Internet Explorer and restart my computer.

All of the sudden yesterday my computer just decided to start running very slowly. Nothing really changed with the exception of me installing the new Java update that my computer told me it needed. Now, at all times, all the items in my task manager use a huge amount of memory and I am completely unable to multitask. Right now, Firefox is using 180,000K of memory and this is the only website I have up, as well as the only program that I am running. Neither Firefox or IE ever used to use this much memory. I have included a screenshot of the task manager from when I first restarted my computer today. I have restarted, defragged, cleaned up the disk, everything. My specs are as follows: Dell Laptop, Intel Celeron M Processor 1.40 Ghz, 504mb of RAM, 80gb hard drive (hard drive is brand new).
Even when Firefox or IE is the only thing running, some websites bog the entire computer down and it stalls for minutes without moving. Then, all of the sudden, it catches up with itself and does everything I tried to do while it was frozen. I know I don't have a lot of RAM and it isn't the newest and fastest system out there, but the sudden onset of this makes me think that my computer isn't just outdated, something changed in the system. Can anyone tell me what is going on here? How can I stop all these applications from using so much memory and be able to multitask and stream online media again?

I'm not sure what else I can do. My PC slowly derailed into sluggishness, and if I have more than one program open while I am running AOL, AOL runs very slow, and even grays out when I try to connect. The memory I installed has helped, but only minutely. I have plenty of hard drive space left (29gb). I run Windows XP on an HP. I'm not sure what other information you would need.

I do document conversions. I work with MS Word files anywhere from 6MB to 23MB in size. If I reboot the computer and start a processing task I get no hangs. However, the longer I work on a task like a "find and replace", the slower the computer's processing gets and then I run out of virtual memory. When run out of virtual memory, I can no longer save the file.
Is there a way to reset or empty out the memory of my computer system without rebooting the system? I can copy and paste a small amount of text like a comma, but that does not help the memory problem. Edited to correct spelling error.

I am trying to upgrade the RAM memory on my Gateway MX3230 notebook. It presently has 256 MB and I would like to upgrade to 1 GB. I have checked the Gateway website and and upgrade to 1 GB is acceptable. I purchased a memory module from Kingston which was listed as being compatible with my laptop. When I tried installing the module, the computer will not start, nothing but black screen. It's as thought there is no memory at all. I tried re-installing the module making sure it was inserted in as far as it will go, still no luck. There is no settings in bios that I can see that would prevent the acceptance of this module
