To free memory, I right clicked on the recycle bin and slid the slider bar from 10% to 1%. However, when I check hard drive space in Windows Explorer, the freed memory isn't there, even when I restart the computer.
View 2 RepliesThe memory runs out on my computer when I open additional windows on my PC and I have 512 MB of RAM. I use internet explorer 6 and with windows xp home edition. Then I have to use Disc Cleanup to get more space by compressing old files and deleting temporary files. I cannot even run this utility when the windows are open and I cannot close windows sometimes so I have to shut down Internet Explorer and restart my computer.

I installed Microsoft Windows XP Professional service pack 2 on a drive of 10 GB memory space with NTFS file system.
After the installation of Win XP, the drive properties shows 4.9 GB of used memory and only 4.45 GB of free memory, but when I try to find total memory occupied for all the files in that drive (using "select-all" and properties) the used memory is only 2.3 GB only.
Now I don't understand the huge difference of this memories calculations. Where that extra used memory gone, when the total memory occupied by all the files is much less.
My laptop runs Windows XP Pro. I'll post any needed information.
The problem is this:
I purchased Everquest from gamestop, installed it and tried to burn the exe to a disk (it was a download purchase) so I could delete the file that was eating up a lot of space. I created the file to burn it to the cd and then went to delete it but the recycle bin froze. The laptop started running slower and slower and I noticed that my free space was getting progressively smaller (i.e. had 11 gigs went down to 8, went into safe mode to try to delete the files from the recycling bin and rebooted and it went down to 5). Now the files are in a folder called hidden_files/recycler and the clean disk doesn't recognize the recycling bin as having files to remove. When I open the bin it freezes up and I'm still losing memory.
I tried using the following to delete the files in the command prompt but it said file path not valid.
1.Open a command prompt window
2.Type cd recycled
3.Type attrib -h inf*
4.Type del info
5. Restart Windows
Every time I try to delete the files it freezes up or acts like they were deleted but upon searching for the files they are still there and my memory is still really low.
I'm willing to post anything that may be needed to resolve this problem just let me know (as I don't know what would be helpful here or what to run and post logs of).
I currently have 13.0 GB of used space and 5.58 GB of free space. I would like to get more free space.
My computer is about 2 years old. In those two years, I had to re-install Windows XP and everything else on my computer...for reasons unknown...I recently performed a New Installation of Windows XP on my computer. I don't have alot of things installed on my computer. The total space all the programs in my Add and Remove programs file takes up is only 1GB. Since I had to start over and re-install everything and my programs only add up to 1GB, Shouldn't I have more free space ?
Windows Explorer caches DLLs (Dynamic-Link Libraries) in memory for a period of time after the application using them has been closed. This can be an inefficient use of memory. 1. Find the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer]. 2. Create a new sub-key named 'AlwaysUnloadDLL' and set the default value to equal '1' to disable Windows caching the DLL in memory. 3. Restart Windows for the change to take effect. I tried this after running a intense program, then watched the task manager; memory recovered it self.

We tried a ChkDisk because my father told me that has fixed his PC before. It didn't help any because it said the disk was fine. I then tried a system restore, which did not help either. The motherboard is an intel D865GLC with 512 MB RAM installed in Dual channel mode with 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 1 and 1 256 MB stick of ram in slot zero of bank 2. This memory is dual channel compatible. I tried to add another 2 sticks of the same type ram but from a different manufacturer.
Here's the problem: I can use any 2 of the 4 sticks of ram together, both from the same manufacturer or 1 from 1 manufacturer and 1 from the other for a total of 512 MB. Everything works fine. I can place one stick in slot 0 of bank 1 and the other in slot 0 of bank 2 or I can place 1 in slot 1 bank 1 and 1 in slot 1 of bank 2 with no problems. I can even place a 3rd stick of the same type ram in any open slot and all's fine (except the machine complains that this is not an optimal memory setup). Memtest86 reports no errors with any of the above configurations
When I double click my computer, recycle bin, control panel, etc, the hourglass comes up for a few seconds, goes off, and nothing else. No error messages or anything, just nothing. I have viewed a few of the threads covering this and a common link was the hijack this result. II have run SpyBotSD and adaware, I have run mutiple virus scans, I did an SFC, and the final thing was to repair windows using the original disk, nothing useful.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system is set up with three harddrives and multiple partitions on each drive.I know that if I just delete a file, it's stored in the Recycle Bin and not actually deleted, even if I empty the bin.However, since the Recycle Bin is on the C: drive, if I delete a file from another drive's partition, and then I use Eraser on the Recycle Bin to overwrite the files inside, are the files still on the partition and the empty space on it now has to also be Erased?

In my ignorance I took my Windows XP disk that came with my current computer and loaded that onto the library computer. I thought it was like a music CD, where you can use the same disk in all the products that you own. I found illegal to load one operating system onto 2 computers using the same disk. I bought a Windows XP upgrade from Office Max yesterday for the library computer. I have been told though that I need to have Windows ME or 98 or some older version on the computer for the Windows XP upgrade to work. Since I've already put the XP on the library computer it doesn't have 98 on it anymore. win ME or 98 disk from a friend that has upgraded to XP if they have one laying around.

We have XP running on an AOpen model computer. It's an Intel Pentium 4 with 1 GB of RAM and a Radeon X700 series video card. We've been having some trouble these past few days with the computer just randomly restarting for no reason. At first my father was having the trouble, but I didn't believe him. So I decided to sit down a little while ago to confirm what he told me.He initially told me the restart happened as he was burning a CD, but then after a restart he burnt like four of them in a row with no difficulty. So then he said it has occured while playing music. So I tested it out, played a song on Windows Media Player, and then tried to play a second one. Boom, instant restart.Now, as I said I was looking elsewhere. I do have the "auto restart" thing disabled, and I do not get a blue screen of death. As for cleaning the computer? Way ahead of you on that one. Prior to me sitting down to test the music thing, I unplugged everything in my computer and opened it up.
