I am trying to install windows xp sp 2 over windows xp on 2 computers and the same thing has happened with each computer.I get down to 36 minutes left - installing drivers - and the setup restarts. I tried to remove the cd and xp then asks for the cd telling me it needs the asms driver, xp then is directed to search e:I386. Xp looks for it there then spontaneously restarts again. The setup is in an endless loop going from 39 minutes remaining till 34 then restarting over and over again. How can I stop this and/or correct this? I did some research at the microsoft site but I have been unable to make anything work.

anytime I am working on it it will suddenly turn off. I mean one second I'm working away and the next it's booting up as though someone flicked the switch off and on again really quickly. When it starts up it shows the message "Windows has recovered from a serious error". It happens when I doing 3d work, burning a dvd, listening to music or even opening a document. It's not and never was connected to the internet.

I've been having major problems with my computer and only got it up with boot disks. It randomly restarts itself but when it does, windows doesn't load and I get a screen asking for system disk. I have to manually turn it on and off for it to restart and then it's fine. Mainly restarts when I try doing any kind of scan - anti virus, defragmenter. Then I got a complete stop and blue screen with stop error 0x7B inaccessible boot device. Could only get it back up with the disks.I haven't added new hardware or programs. I haven't been able to virus scan but spybot and vundofix come clear. Originally I thought restarts were from overheating (have cooling problems) but could a stop come from that too?Worried about a boot virus.

Since, two days ago, I'm dealing with this problem. When I'm trying to re-open Explorer.exe, it closed automaticaly and then restart and closed again .I have an updated Panda antivirus, CA Yahoo! Anti-Spyware, and a Microsoft Windows XP Mediacenter 2005 that recently (after that the problem occurs) updated from the Update.Microsoft.com.I've checked my system with panda, and norton AV, but they didn't detect any viruses or anything else.

I have a Crystal WDM Audio soundcard and the driver keeps uninstalling itself everytime I restart my computer - at least that's what I think it's doing. If I try to play a music file or watch a video I get an error telling me no soundcard is installed, and if I install the latest version of the driver for my card then the problem is solved, but only until I shut my computer down and start it up again the next time. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

I have my computer set up for automatic updates and yesterday one of them started downloading and installing repeatedly. As soon as I click on the icon and install one update, the icon reappears and tells me new updates are ready to install, but it's the same one over and over. It's the Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 SP1 (KB823353). How do I MAKE IT STOP?

1) While I originally started with XP SP2, now I have a XP SP3 CD, with the SATA drivers successfully incorporated via nLite. SAME PROBLEM, even with the BIOS and XP Setup recognizing the HDDs on SATA ports instead of IDE channels.
2) I downloaded the Windows 7 Beta 64 bit, got thru the install to the point of "Updating Registry" and then the system lost power as with XP and did a soft restart.I am currently downloading to Ubuntu Linux to see if that also fails, at which point I definitely know I have a hardware issue. The question is: Which component? I am leaning towards PSU, with mobo in second. Please any insight from the pros would help.

I am still having a recurring problem with my Realtek Audio Device. This is not a new installation and no other new hardware has been installed on the computer (Win Xp Home, SP2). No conflicts are shown. I fear that some files may have become corrupted but this is one behaviour which constantly recurs - maybe someone has a fix or knows what files I need to replace. When I start up the computer, there is no volume icon, no sound and device manager shows the audio device as unable to start, code 10. All the codecs etc other things under sounds are OK.If I choose to uninstall it, then run add hardware wizard, it will reinstall it no problems and the sound comes back. But next boot up it's gone again. In case of not having read previous post, I suspect some corruption occurred when I had to cold shutdown my computer.
I obviously have the correct drivers on the computer & can load them through hardware wizard - I just don't know why they don't stick on shutdown - it's as if the function which registers the entry in the register is corrupt - I know there are certain files which can be installed or uninstalled from the registry in order to start or stop a service.is it something like this I need to do?

This problem is now resolved: here is the fix that worked for me in case anyone else can use it. I tried a fix I found by Googling, applied it, and it did not work. This morning I called the Microsoft toll free number for Security issues (on their web site reached.Go into add remove programs and uninstall the msxml update kb945530. Close and go to windows update (start, all programs, near top of list). Click on express update: the update should now show on the list. Reinstall the update, then restart your computer. This worked for me and I hope it helps someone else who has the problem.

I'm a college student; majoring in computer systems engineering technology. Classes don't start for spring until the end of the week, so I can't have my professors help me, so I'm using fourms to fix my problem. Here it is:I'm currently working on a Dell Inspirion 1501, AMD 64x Dual Core, 1GB RAM, 100 GB HDD, Windows XP Media Center Edition, SP2.The original problem was a registry error message that was coming up at startup, and Internet Explorer 7 would not load the Internet even though everything with the Local Area Connection was fine. These problems were fixed by: Uninstalling Internet Explorer 7, and running TuneUp2008, which has a registry cleaner, which fixed several problems. Everything seemed to work fine after this; up until I attempted to use Spyware Blaster and Ad-Aware. The computer was not allowing them to access the internet.Checked the Windows Firewall, and added the programs to the exceptions list, still nothing.
Then I realized that they had Norton Internet Security 2006 installed, so figuring that it was the Norton firewall blocking those programs I attempted to open Norton. The program would not open, and would freeze. After several unsuccessful attempts to uninstall Norton, (I was recieving some error message aboue being logged into Norton as an Admin user, but since Norton would not open, I could not do this) I found the solution on the internet, a file from Symtematec, I ran it, and it said that it would be completely uninstalled after the next restart, so I restarted.
Since I restarted from uninstalling Norton, Chkdsk runs at every startup. First it runs a 3-stage check, finds no problems, then reboots. At the next reboot, chkdsk will run again, this time with a 5-stage check. After hours and hours of chkdsk just repeatedly running on a loop, I attempted to boot in safe mode, which was unsuccessful. I'm also not able to boot into Last Known Good Config, it just starts the chkdsk again. The only thing I AM able to do, is run the WinXP CD at bootup and run the recovery console, but I'm not sure what I need to be fixing or doing within the Recovery Console.

So after having an extremely long battle with my computer repeatedly restarting and restarting and restarting I got the BLUE error screen. I copied down the errors on a piece of paper and they are: STOP: 0x0000008E (0x00000005, 0x0004210B, 0xB004EC8C, 0x00000000).
I tried google'ing these codes but wasn't able to figure out what they were trying to say. I'm not sure what to do at this point Some background information. For a while now everytime I turn on my computer it will continually restart at different intervals until all of a sudden it just sticks and stays on and at that point it will work for hours on hours. However the restarting issue occurs EVERY time I start the computer. It usually stops restarting itself and works fine after about 10 minutes.
I ran MemTest86+ and found no errors. I switched out my PSU with a more powerful one (though my cousin thinks that one may be bad as well) but I don't have any extras and don't have a power supply tester laying around... I'm not sure how to check if it is my OS or possibly my board... I also don't have any extra parts

I tried Norton Virus Scanner, Adaware, Defragment, and System Restore. But sadly... it still doesn't work...It happened again when I was using spy bot and listening to music... what is the problem??

Well, my father told me this all started after he clicked yes on an error message that he had always pressed no on...he couldn't remember what the message said.I'm running Windows XP. So after pushing power, the computer passes POST, then goes to a screen saying Windows can not start normally and gives an option of going into Safe mode, trying to start normally, etc.If I select start normally, it goes to the black Windows Startup screen, showing a progress bar, then the screen goes black as if it's going to go to the blue welcome screen then just restarts, with the same loop over and over.In safe mode, it says what drivers it's loading, then quickly does a blue screen (too quick to read), then restarts.Do you guys think this is a software problem? Is there any way to fix it without reinstalling Windows?

My WinXP SP2 computer restarts its self just as it logs in to any account.
I woke up to find my computer had an error on it. It had been on all night and connected to the internet (if that helps you understand the situation). The error was something like this:
Explorer.exe - Application Error
The instruction at "0x0105b1fe" referenced memory at "0x000000000". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.
and 'Explorer.exe' was something else a couple times (if I saw it I would remember)
I kept clicking 'OK' and It would keep appearing, then the start menu and taskbar would disappear and appear. The warning kept appearing. I restarted properly and then the computer would keep restarting after "Windows is starting up...".
I tried going into Safe Mode and Safe Mode in Command Prompt and still restarts when I get to logging in.
I thought if I got to MS-DOS, I could launch System Restore and go back to a previous state, but it's easier said then done.
I have tried to boot from a Win98 CD, but I couldn't locate the C:WINDOWS directory.
I've tried to boot from a Office 2000 Pro CD that had Word, Excel, and Outlook. I could brouse around the CD in Command Prompt, but that didn't help much.
Now, I'm onto booting from an WinXP upgrade CD. I've tried reinstall Windows, and when Windows Installation is just about done, the computer restarts and I had to restart all again. When I start up now, it is WinXP without Service Pack 2.
In Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console, I have tried to open System Restore ("C:WINDOWSSystem32Restore
strui.exe"), but I just get 'The command is not recognized. Type HELP for a list of supported commands.'
Does anyone know how to open System Restore in Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console? Or even if is possible. Am I even on the right path?
Can anyone give me any hints as to WHY this error happened and what to do now to get my pc started properly?
I also have my all my files on a partitioncalled D: and I am willing to try to reinstall Win2K again and upgrade to XP. One more question is if I format or reinstall on the C: drive, will it effect the D: partition?

I'm working on a computer for a client and have found it to be the most problem filled machine I have ever delt with. Spybot and ad-aware removed between the two of them over 1000 spyware files, I had to un install several bad programs, and stinger found 7 critical viruses. . It also will not connect to the Internet, it has been configured to the shop's network and I can ping other computers in the network no problem, I can even ping the gateway, but it cant connect to or ping any site beyond that...and finally, explorer restarts anytime you right click on a file on the desktop
I did manage to get highjackthis on to it and move the logfile to this computer on my USB drive and so here it is

Here is the event. It seems to happen whenever they are playing games or online. sometimes they will just go back to the desktop and the program will close.

Brief explanation. I purchased a generic brand laptop and loading xp myself. I had no problems whatsoever until I bought the game Medival II. While I was playing the game, as I had before, it suddenly froze my laptop. I was forced to turn off the power and restart. When I did that, I was able to see the bios screen and enter bios which still seems to recognize everything correctly in the laptop. But when getting out of BIOS system restarts. Just a black screen. I finally got to the point that I decided just to reinstall. Upon attempting to do so, I get the following error message after it attempts to load
