Virus Scan Crashed To A Reboot
Mar 17, 2005
I was running a virus scan using AVG free it nearly completed then crashed to a reboot, this has happened before, but upon restart it went through the usual "System has recovered from a serious problem would you like to send an error report" which I did, it transferred the report to Microsoft and instead of the windows oca (Online crash analysis) site I got a window on the screen showing the web address for oca saying that "The application was not found"

A friend was being bombarded with pop-ups, so I ran two programs which I use on my own computer and have installed on many others; they are "Spybot" and "AdAware." He is running Windows XP Pro. This friend of mine does not go to porn or gaming sites (and I found no evidence that he did), or gambling sites, with the exception of one casino site that has never caused any problems for him
The first time I ran Spybot, it detected 249 problems but couldn't remove some because they were running at the time of the scan, and gave me a choice of running Spybot again the next time the computer was started. I chose yes and it found 197 problems this time and couldn't fix 30 of them. I chose yes again to run Spybot on the next boot, and this time it said that it could not fix 44 problems. I ran RegCleaner and it took out some files but I didn't count them. I then ran Norton WinDoctor which found and fixed eight problems. I followed this with a scan with AdAware, which found 1,083 problems!! It could not fix 235 of them and on the reboot it could not fix 177 of them. The next scan showed 168 problems and could not fix 60 of them on reboot. When I rebooted, a Welcome screen requiring a password for the Username "Owner" came up so I called the guy and asked him if he had ever used a password with this system, and he said no. Now I cannot get into his system at all!

i am fixing a computer for a client of mine that had a few viruses on it. i booted into safe mode and ran a few scans - norton, trend micro, anti malware etc, and all of them caught something and cleaned the machine. I kept running scans until everything was gone. i also fixed the registry and ran ccleaner etc. well, when i try to boot into normal mode the computer will stay at the logon screen. the mouse will move around but when i click to logon, nothing happens...well, thats not exactly true, after a few minutes the admin icon will flash like i clicked on it then nothing.

I use Outlook Express for emails, and since switching on today, I`ve been receiving the same email over and over again.I believe that this soundsl like I have a virus, and I`ve tried to run a virus-scan, but after 3 or 4 minutes, the virus-scan programme is shutting down as well. ( I use "Blueyonder PC Guard" for my virus scanner)Do you think that it`s a virus, or could it be something else ?

The following is repeat of a previous post I put out there. I am still having the same problem and my anti virus, when it does run, says my computer is virus free. Whenever I run McAfee virus scan version 10 my computer completely shuts down at some point during the scan. However if I reboot and run scan a second time it runs fine. I am using Windows XP with all updates installed.

I am trying to boot into safe mode in Windows XP (office) to deal with trojan horses (Vundo.gen.w/spy-agent.bw.gen.e) infections. I am able to get to the safe mode option screen via "f8", but it will only load some drivers and then it returns to the safe mode option screen (endless loop).
Further I cannot access the system config utility via "run". I open up the run dialog box and type "msconfig" nothing happens.
An ideas? What would happen if I run a full virus scan (with system restore off) without being in safe mode?

I'm running Windows XP - Media Center Edition on Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2GHz, 1.5G RAM.This morning, Norton 360 detected and blocked several intrusion attempts, but stated that everything was secure.Shortly thereafter, every program that attempted to open would generate the following pop-up message, "[program name] UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENT - The application has failed to start because msefrms.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."I click OK to acknowledge this message, only to have it reappear. After several "OK clicks", however, the program usually opens and functions properly.
I restarted my PC to get into safe mode to run a virus scan, but the message appears even before Windows begins (even on winlogon, services, lsass, etc.). Again, a few clicks of OK gets me past the message and into Windows.I haven't been able to find ANY reference to msefrms.dll on the web.

Everytime I boot up it goes to the windows 2000 screen then reboots to the beginning and keeps on doing it.

I'm having trouble with my HP Desktop running Windows XP Home. A virus brought my computer down a couple of days ago. The virus had the effect of redirecting me to commercial sites off of Google searches. This effect only seemed to be an issue with IE: Firefox didn't seem to be affected by it at all. After lots of scrubbing with a combo of anti-virus applications I was able to clear out my pc's infection. However, since then I've been experiencing intermittent reboots. Typically happens when I'm doing something memory intensive. It happened twice, for instance, when I was attempting to back up my hard disk. It's also knocked my active desktop out a few different times. I ran a scan on minidump files using WinDbg. Initially scans said problem with unknown driver. After adding diagnostic capacity to registry file however (altering registry so a specific error would print) and reexamining some of the earlier scans, I got an outcome of memory corruption.
I tried to beat this by altering virtual memory: thought virus may have impacted virtual memory somehow. Changed virtual memory to XP control and this seemed to have benefits for performance but I got another reboot when I tried another hard disk backup. I realize minidump readings for memory corruption can indicate RAM or other failure, but this was not an issue at all until the virus came and went. I can't believe it's simply coincidence that I'm experiencing this now. I never had reboots like this before.

Any idea why my PC running on Windows XP occassionally reboots while I am in the middle of something? It does not seem to be associated with any particular programme, and neither AVG nor Spybot pick up any viruses etc, although Spybot does pick up a change in the registery after rebooting (should I allow the change?).
