Restarted PC To Get Into Safe Mode To Run Virus Scan / Message Appears Before Windows Begins
Aug 3, 2009
I'm running Windows XP - Media Center Edition on Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2GHz, 1.5G RAM.This morning, Norton 360 detected and blocked several intrusion attempts, but stated that everything was secure.Shortly thereafter, every program that attempted to open would generate the following pop-up message, "[program name] UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENT - The application has failed to start because msefrms.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."I click OK to acknowledge this message, only to have it reappear. After several "OK clicks", however, the program usually opens and functions properly.
I restarted my PC to get into safe mode to run a virus scan, but the message appears even before Windows begins (even on winlogon, services, lsass, etc.). Again, a few clicks of OK gets me past the message and into Windows.I haven't been able to find ANY reference to msefrms.dll on the web.

I am trying to boot into safe mode in Windows XP (office) to deal with trojan horses (Vundo.gen.w/spy-agent.bw.gen.e) infections. I am able to get to the safe mode option screen via "f8", but it will only load some drivers and then it returns to the safe mode option screen (endless loop).
Further I cannot access the system config utility via "run". I open up the run dialog box and type "msconfig" nothing happens.
An ideas? What would happen if I run a full virus scan (with system restore off) without being in safe mode?

My dad has a Sony Vaio labtop that he bought from his friend at work with the operating system and all the software already installed. It has a single account named Owner that he clicks on which usually allows him to log-on, he never had a password. He clicks the icon, it appears to start logging on then suddendly it will say logging off, saving settings, then returns us back to the main log-on screen.I tried to start in safe mode by pressing F8 while the computer is intially turning on, but all the labtop does is make this loud beeping noise and starts up normally. No screen appears for me to select safe mode or anything.

I just put together a new system from scratch and regretting it BIG TIME, I have an intel d915GAG board with an intel P4 3.2 chip. Brand new WD HD, floppy, and 2 dvd/cd drives. After the final screw was tightened, I started my new system and the intel logo appeared. I pressed ESC and it appears to start the bios setup. It flashes my memory size (size is 512 MB), then the screen immediately flashes and begins to do and IDE scan, in which it promptly tells me that Device 0 not detected, device 1 not detected, device 2 not detected, device 3 not detected....and the setup stops right there. I don't have a clue, after searching Intel's site for 2 hours where to go from here.

An infinite loop it seems. i was trying to start my pc in safe mode, to delete a .exe file from C:WindowsSystem32 which was suggested by a post to fix the "windows not genuine problem". To be able to do that, i ran msconfig and selected /safeboot under BOOT.INI tab. now everytime i try to reboot my pc it asks me to select an operating system (windows xp pro/microsft windows) if i select windows xp then it asks me to select a startup mode (safe/normal/last successful) and then no matter what i select it will reboot it self, and do the same again. If i select microsoft windows (instead of xp) then it shows MS Windows 98 screen and then goes into DOS prompt. from what i have read in some of the threads is that, i have a virus which is preventing my pc to boot in to safe mode, and because i have selected /safeboot from msconfig windows will only boot in safe mode, meaning i am stuck. the workaround these threads were suggesting was to find the boot.ini file and rename it to something else, which would fix the problem, because this file holds the info about in which mode your pc should boot. i tried to rename this file from command prompt (i cant get into windows, thats why), using "ren c:oot.ini boot.ini" but it says file name invalid. i think this is because its a hidden file. then i tried "attrib -h boot.ini", but it says attrib cannot be used in DOS mode.

I have a Gateway with Windows XP Home Edition. So yesterday I tried to remove a virus and somehow removed some .exe files in C:windows folder. Now when I try to boot up the PC it asks me to start in safe mode or to log in normally. It will show the blue screen of death for half a second and then go back to the options where it asks me to choose Safe mode or Last known configuration. I am also able to hit F8 but anything I choose there will just restart the computer and take me back to those options. It is like a loop, no matter what option I choose, the PC will restart and nothing will happen. None of these options work and I don't think I will be able to fix the PC anymore (besides using the original windows CD and re-install Windows.)

My cousin's XP was infected by virus, and it was not able to start in any mode(including safe mode, command prompt, last configuration and etc). I took and move the harddisk to my PC and scaned it using trend micro
housceall. The virus scanner detected and removed several virus. But it is still not able to get into any mode. Once i get into the xp, the XP reboots and it happens to any mode. I also did the repair installation and scandisk, and it did not work.

applications were running slow, having problems closing etc. I expected a virus problem, but NIS 2005 did not detect any viruses. This morning I attempted to boot the machine as usual, and I found that windows would not boot after repeated attempts in any mode. I borrowed a friends windows XP cd, i dont have mine on hand, and attempted to repair the installation. However, when it tried to copy files to the hard drive it said that it could not detect it.
Naturally, seeing this i assumed that the harddrive had gotten knocked around, bad power lead, etc. I made sure that the connecters were securely attached and booted again, repair etc, same problem. I believe that the problem lies with the configuration of using a PCI card to connect the hard drive to the motherboard. When its connected to the mother board, however, the boot agent wont run, saying that the "disk is not ready" or something to that extent.

I'll try to remember, to the best of my ability, the sequence of events...Suffice it to say that I downloaded and tried to install something I shouldn't have. I Immediately tried to get out of the errors from AVG (free version) and stop the install. All seems good, then IE keeps opening to bogus ad sites. I realize I've got something. AVG and AdAware both fail in removing this Win32Trojan.tdss (I think AVG gave me this description). AVG tells me to reboot to remove it properly. Reboot throws me into "can't verify this installation of Windows". Boot in safe mode work, then I get the same error on reboot...even in safe mode.
I don't have the original Windows CD (separated from husband and software at the same time; cannot find any software now), but it's a Dell and it came with Windows XP Home (product key on box), but I installed XP Pro instead. Don't know what product key was used or how to get it.....

this morning I reinstalled my Zonealarm, and was asked to restart my pc for the changes to take effect.Upon restart, windows could not be opened, and I get the options 'safe mode' 'safe mode with networking' 'safe mode with command prompt' ' open with last good setting' and 'open windows normally'I cannot open windows in any other way than safe mode.System check takes around 10/20 minutes to run, and tells me:the /pagefile.sys entry contains a nonvalid link , and that a .dll file is cross linked. It then tells me it has fixed the link. After system check it usually takes me back to the 'safe or normal' option screen. This is really frustrating, I went into the registry in safe mode and changed the value of pagesystem on shutdown to (1) as I saw on another site, to no avail. I have tried a system restore from safe mode twice, same problem.

The problem: Windows refuses to boot, even in safe mode.Symptoms: System POSTs fine then hangs when windows kicks in. I've tried all the options when the 'windows failed to load properly' comes up, but they all hang. When I tried it in safe mode a list of drivers appears to be loading but then it gets to /mup.sys and it hangs there.Recent changes to system: Yes and one is undoubtedly the culprit, as this install of windows has been running flawlessly for over 2 years. Today I made two changes to the system....and in all my wisdom I made them both at the same time, although I'm pretty sure I know what screwed it up. I flashed the BIOS to the latest revision, upgraded the processor to a Athlon socket 939 x2 +4200 (from a single core +3200 I think) AND installed a small external SATA port (I think this screwed stuff up).The BIOS upgrade went smoothly and took place a few hours and reboots before the processor change in eSATA bracket install, so I don't think it's to blame. The processor install also went off without a hitch and the computer not only recognized it correctly, but the first boot was fine and went to windows. During this first boot I got the 'installing new hardware' little picture in the lower right hand part of the taskbar, but was never prompted for drivers.

I have spent most of my day working on my computer and with not a lot of success. For a few weeks I have been having an error message appear when we restart the computer regarding xprt5.dll and the application can not be found.I have googled and checked out a ton of sites about fixing this and how it relates to AOL.And an emergency virus scan earlier today when my computer would not boot back up.I also had or have a virus where I am getting a ton of bounced back emails regarding drugs for sale being sent to people not in my address book. Earlier today I did a full scan with Norton, fixed the problems but then my live update was not working. So after speaking to a customer rep. from Symantec we removed Norton and I downloaded the 7.2 version and again ran another scan which came up clean. We un-installed AOL and then reinstalled it after checking out the site that you listed in a previous post, but still to no avail we get the error message and again tonight I am having bounced back emails with virus warnings.

I was given an older machine that had win me installed. It was full of junk and would crash often. So I downloaded a startup disk for formating Win-Me. I ran thru the process - formated the hard drive or so it seemed but when I tried to install winxp it would go thru the process and then get a blue screen stop message. When I restarted the machine I got the message "hard drive capable but disabled". There are ways to enable the drive but you need an operating system to do that. The cd rom on this machine is scsi and I am not familiar with that process. Is there a way to enable a hard drive with out the operating system? The drive is an ultra DMA-mode 4.
