I have windows xp sp3 while running avast 4.8 a warning stating cwindowssystem32drivers was infected with win32 alueron. I shut down my computer to run a boot time scan and now my computer is starting indefinatly. While attempting to start in safe mode computer states press enter to continue loading sptd.sys. I press enter and it restarts.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a Gateway with Windows XP Home Edition.So yesterday I tried to remove a virus and somehow removed some .exe files in C:windows folder.Now when I try to boot up the PC it asks me to start in safe mode or to log in normally. It will show the blue screen of death for half a second and then go back to the options where it asks me to choose Safe mode or Last known configuration. I am also able to hit F8 but anything I choose there will just restart the computer and take me back to those options. It is like a loop, no matter what option I choose, the PC will restart and nothing will happen. None of these options work and I don't think I will be able to fix the PC anymore (besides using the original windows CD and re-install Windows.)

housceall. The virus scanner detected and removed several virus. But it is still not able to get into any mode. Once i get into the xp, the XP reboots and it happens to any mode. I also did the repair installation and scandisk, and it did not work.
I am trying to boot into safe mode in Windows XP (office) to deal with trojan horses (Vundo.gen.w/spy-agent.bw.gen.e) infections. I am able to get to the safe mode option screen via "f8", but it will only load some drivers and then it returns to the safe mode option screen (endless loop).
Further I cannot access the system config utility via "run". I open up the run dialog box and type "msconfig" nothing happens.
An ideas? What would happen if I run a full virus scan (with system restore off) without being in safe mode?
applications were running slow, having problems closing etc. I expected a virus problem, but NIS 2005 did not detect any viruses. This morning I attempted to boot the machine as usual, and I found that windows would not boot after repeated attempts in any mode. I borrowed a friends windows XP cd, i dont have mine on hand, and attempted to repair the installation. However, when it tried to copy files to the hard drive it said that it could not detect it.
Naturally, seeing this i assumed that the harddrive had gotten knocked around, bad power lead, etc. I made sure that the connecters were securely attached and booted again, repair etc, same problem. I believe that the problem lies with the configuration of using a PCI card to connect the hard drive to the motherboard. When its connected to the mother board, however, the boot agent wont run, saying that the "disk is not ready" or something to that extent.
I'll try to remember, to the best of my ability, the sequence of events...Suffice it to say that I downloaded and tried to install something I shouldn't have. I Immediately tried to get out of the errors from AVG (free version) and stop the install. All seems good, then IE keeps opening to bogus ad sites. I realize I've got something. AVG and AdAware both fail in removing this Win32Trojan.tdss (I think AVG gave me this description). AVG tells me to reboot to remove it properly. Reboot throws me into "can't verify this installation of Windows". Boot in safe mode work, then I get the same error on reboot...even in safe mode.
I don't have the original Windows CD (separated from husband and software at the same time; cannot find any software now), but it's a Dell and it came with Windows XP Home (product key on box), but I installed XP Pro instead. Don't know what product key was used or how to get it.....

I'm running Windows XP - Media Center Edition on Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.2GHz, 1.5G RAM.This morning, Norton 360 detected and blocked several intrusion attempts, but stated that everything was secure.Shortly thereafter, every program that attempted to open would generate the following pop-up message, "[program name] UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENT - The application has failed to start because msefrms.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."I click OK to acknowledge this message, only to have it reappear. After several "OK clicks", however, the program usually opens and functions properly.
I restarted my PC to get into safe mode to run a virus scan, but the message appears even before Windows begins (even on winlogon, services, lsass, etc.). Again, a few clicks of OK gets me past the message and into Windows.I haven't been able to find ANY reference to msefrms.dll on the web.
Appears that some sort of virus took me by surprise. It wiped out most of my .jpg files (from dig. camera) and my TB email account.The only thing I did prior was run AdAware in safe mode for XP.I use AVG, Zone alarm Panicware's popup stopper.Is there any hope of getting my pics back?

I keep it very clean, anyway enuff of my sadness.Jus recently i was hit by a virus. AVG free, finally cleaned it up, and now im receiving Windows Security Alerts. The exact message is "To help protect your computer, Your registry has to be fixed. To resolve theis problem, obtain the latest update." only trouble is, i click accept, it downloads this program called System Registry Cleaner 2.4, and then i have to pay for it before i can use it. Unfortunately it doesnt accept solo, so i went ahead and purchased a registry cleaner from somewhere else.

I have an older somputer I use to Host Games online...seemed fine last few nite .however the last 2 oe 3 times I have started it...it takes forever to start and a screen appears saying sorry for any inconveinince but windows could not start..etc etc..gives options to start in Normal mode safe mode or last known good configuration..wich is what I tried after turning it off and back on again..still nothing..I can get it to start in safe mode....but it wont boot up in normal mode..just hangs at "Windows XP" screen...Its an older Pentium4 Dell Dimension4300.

The only way you can get anything to work in normal mode is by way of the task manager. In safe mode, however, I have access to everything except for sound. I have gone through the Microsoft website and ran all of the virus tests and scans. They say they find things and that they have removed them, but after restarting, it's the same old thing!! I tried rebooting it but only safe mode worked, however when I left it alone for a couple of hours it worked normally for around 10 minutes, then froze up again.I thought it could be overheating so I left it for the night, but its still not booting up normally.I've tried using msconfig to make it do a diagnostic startup but that doesn't work either.

Will only boot up in safemode or safemode with networking. As it boots up a screen pops up that "appears" to be telling me why, but it goes off so quick I can't read it. Is there a way to freeze that screen so it can be read? Surely there's some kind of "log in log" that tells you this somewhere in XP?? After booting up for the 1st time we had 2 question marks in the device mgr and we finally got it so there are none. But still it will only boot up in safe mode. We're thinking that boot up screen will tell us what the problem is.

When I try to boot up Windows XP, when its at the windows loading screen with the Windows logo, the bar under it the blue thing will move for about 6 or 7 times and then just freeze and stop. Then I restart the computer and choose to boot in safe mode which is the only mode that works.This is the second time this has happened,the first time it happened through safe mode I got the Windows Xp.iso image from microsoft.com, and then used a product key locator to find it on my pc because I do not have the windows xp boot discs but my original copy of XP is legit.

I am running Windows XP on an 8 year old Gateway computer,and it will only start in safe mode.This happened after I updated my hardware drivers.I got a fatal system error box,and system restore doesn't work. When I try to use the Gateway Restore discs,they won't play because my D drive isn't recognized. Should I just scrap everything and get a new HD since I haven't had any luck with reinstalling,or is there a way for a computer idiot to reinstall Windows XP without a disc?
