View 4 RepliesHelp. I've installed a 2nd hard drive (windows XP). Everything went
smoothly, however, when I was prompted to copy all files over to the
new drive, I opted not to do so, not realizing that would cause me to
not be able to install programs on that drive. Now my new drive is
just used for storing music, pictures and movies. Please tell me what
I'd need to do so I can install programs on that drive. Thanks
I have an IDE drive housed in an external USB enclosure. When I connect it to my XP Pro (SP2) desktop it is recognised, and I can browse the folders and files. However when I try to copy a large number of files from the drive to a local hard drive on the desktop I get a "resource no longer available" error, and the external drive is no longer visible to the PC. I can then disconnect and reconnect the drive but only get back into the same loop.

Being a curious type I pulled the power and ribbon leads from the DVD and plugged them into the 4G HD, after setting the jumper to slave. Then switched on. A dos line appeared saying 'automatically configuring an F: drive' After which Windows appeared to boot up normally. Except that 'My Computer' showed no (D The 4G (F drive showed as not formated. So... I removed the 4G and replaced the leads back to the DVD. My Computer' shows 3.5 floppy Local Disk(C FRSTHAFOLD(D 9G abt Notice NO (E
Not only that but my D drive is missing lots of files and folders wont open. It seems that the partitioning has been forgotten! I have checked what bios settings there are (not many on Compaq 5000) And the bios sees my main Crive and only one 20G disk I have a bad feeling about this Is there any way to get things back to normal?
After putting Dell E520 in sleep mode for a day. upon restart logged in and a desktop came up that looked like a default dell set-up some program icons were there but my desktop image was not. No folders. Nothing I had customized for me was there. It was as if all files and folders I created or saved were deleted with no trace left behind.went into BIOS cked around everything looked o.k then shut down and started up same thing again. After doing this twice Started up again and logging in normally Everything came back up all folders and files , my desktop image everything as I had left it 2 days ago , totally strange.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI restarted Windows XP one day, thinking nothing of it, however, at the boot up screen, it gave me the message that one of my files was corrupt and couldn't start. No biggie, this has happened to me before, I know how to fix it. However, when I popped in the XP Pro boot disk, it gave me the option to do a system restore (I accessed this by going to install Windows XP, and then selecting the operating system I had currently installed to recover). I chose to do this, thinking it would save me time. It did in one respect, in that I can now start Windows XP, the only problem is that it's now as if I completely reinstalled Windows i.e. all my files and programs are gone. However, when I open my C: drive, all my files are there, I can see them and access some of them, however, others, such as My Documents, I can't access, although they have to be somewhere on my computer, because my C drive is still filled to capacity. I tried searching for files and folders to find some of my documents to no avail. I tried doing a system restore, however, all the restore points I created are no longer there.

View 5 Replies View RelatedNo matter what I do, when I change the properties of a single directory to either show or not show hidden files and folders, that property then changes in every single directory on the whole drive. I do not click on "Apply to All Folders", I just go to the directory of interest and change the button in Folder Options>View and press "OK". Is there a trick here? Basically I want some folders to show hidden folders, and others to not show them. Right now it's either all or nothing! Again, I am NOT pressing apply to all, which I know will apply all view settings to every folder.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a WD 1TB hard drive installed as an extra drive to hold a large series of video files. When it was install I formatted it as NFTS. Now I have ssome folders that have become quited large in actual size (20+GB) and in number of files(800+).When the folders on this drive are accessed that have any size to them (2-6GB or more) the system hangs with a 'windows explorer has encountered a problem.' error. Sometimes I get the Dr. Watson debugging error. Is there a fix for this? The event log states an explorer.exe error. The error as perviously stated states a 'windows explorer problem' not an Internet explorer error.
Running Windows XP home, SP3
I would delete some of these, (some I need) but I can't stay in the folder long enough to access the actual file or files themselves before the system hangs. I can play the files in media player
when using Defragment (programs-accessories-system tools-defragment) in Windows XP, after defragmenting C drive, report shows that certain large .pst files from Outlook were not defrag.this is unfortunate since these are the "gummiest" files on my computer. is there any way to defrag these files safely? perhaps and update to defrag program which will enable this? or a workaround? or a third party program which will defrag these files? a way to defrag .pst files within Outlook?

I don't know the name of this super hidden folder so I can't just do that. Any help? And if you notice it says that the Tim Atkinson Folder contains 15,738 files in 651 folders and when I go in that folder and select EVERYTHING I get 2,017 files in 650 folders. Theres a folder with a lot of files missing.

I created a new user account and it was OK until the screen went into screen saver and I needed to log back in and the problem was there again. This appears to have only started to happen when I added my XP laptop to the wired network.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running windows xp sp2. My primary computer seems to have had a motherboard meltdown. Left on thursday, would not boot on friday. Cannot get to cmos, or anything. I removed the harddrive and put it in another computer to get work files off of the drive and transfer them to server. On boot it says"error loading operting system".I hooked up the hard drive as a slave and used explorer to go through and get the files. I can see the Desktop directory in documents and settings****desktop, but i get an access denied when i try to get to the files on desktop. I have tried using the Dos Command prompt and have the same result. I have booted in safe mode w/ prompt, same results. I have tried making a user profile with same name and passwords, no luck. These are files on the desktop, not shortcuts. Does anyone know how i can copy these files?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a few folders in my 2nd partition giving me this error "folder is not accessible, access is denied." They contain 3 very large 3-4gb files that were working right before I tried to organize them and move them to a different directory (cut and paste). I've tried disabling the simple file sharing and gaining access to them again, but it won't work.

View 2 Replies View Relatedfinally got Windows to see my drive, now installing OS (happy days)just wanted to poll opinion on whether it's worth partitioning a large (500GB) drive and installing the OS on smaller slice?my understanding is that the current consensus view is doing this actually only slows things down as performance on modern 16MB cached drives is pretty good as is.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThere's an easy way to save all the files and folders from my old "C" drive. I have copied all my pictures to CD. No problem. Now about all the games I have and things like Roto Form, favorites, etc. I dont have a clue. Can I back up the entire "C" drive? Will I have to re-load all my games? Is there a way I can transfer files through the USB ports? Its been suggested to me to actually put my old hard drive in the new computer to transfer the information. I don't want to do anything that might compromise the new computer. I have even thought of allowing a virus in the new computer from the old although I dont know of any.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI copied a large directory to a backup drive, preparing to replace the HD on which the directory currently exists. After copying, the "size" of source and target both match:7.14 GB (7,673,318,222 bytes). The number of files and folders match as well. However, the "size on disk" does NOT match. On the source drive:7.24 GB (7,783,518,208 bytes)On the external (target) drive:8.21 GB (8,821,047,296 bytes) Is this a problem? Should I be concerned that the copy was not completed correctly?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have the a problem with my Dell Inspiron 6000. I wanted to change my 60 GB HD with a 320 GB Western Digital HD. I knew about the maximum 137 GB that the BIOS could recognoze, but when I booted from the XP CD it looked like it could recognize the entire 320 GB HD, so I thought OK and tried to make only one partition of 320 GB.
After doing this when I start my laptop I only get the blinking cursor in the upper left corner. So I pretty much knew that it was because I partioned my drive to large.
And this is where my REAL problem begins. I am trying to boot from the XP CD to make more partitions under the 137 GB limit. However my computer won't boot from the CD and let me delete the 320 GB partition. I jut get a black screen?! My computer just refuses to boot from the CD and it's also unable to boot from the hard drive (which never worked after the installation).
I was just wondering if it is a good idea to clean out the :WINDOWSTempC:Documents And Settings(Username)Local SettingsTemp foldersperiodically.I know i have to uncheck the show hidden files and folders, Do i select all in each folder afterwards and delete everything?

I'm 55 so I guess I forgot how to download them as individual songs and not have them arbitrarily placed in folders predetermined by Windows. I remember a musicmatch and/or real networks technician told me once how to change my settings so they are captured as individual songs. Probably a simple answer, but I don't remember it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy daughter's HP dv2000t notebook computer had a motherboard crash, apparently (won't turn on). I took the hard drive out and put it into a NexStar-3 USB drive enclosure to try to salvage the iTunes and documents. The folders all show up, but when I try to access her user directory, it says that it is "empty". The properties for the hard drive also say that it the drive is almost full, so the data is all there...somewhere.Is there some kind of security that is tying the user directory to my daughter's computer and dissallowing me to tread her files on another computer? I can see how this would be a good feature if it was stolen, but when I send it back to HP for repairs, they say that they will restore the hard drive to its original condition and wipe out her investment in music, etc.
