been trying to put xp pro over home edition but disk may be faulty.it keeps coming up fatal error and restarts but i dont want to do a recovery and need to know if there is a way to get pc started without it going into xp pro setup.i have files on pc that i dont want to lose.
View 1 RepliesPC has rebooted perfectly until yesterday. When I go thru the restart computer process. it will stall at the startup p.o.s.t screen. I can shut it down with the shutdown computer process and it powers off. I wait a few seconds, then power back on and it will boot into Windows perfectly.It just will not go thru the restart process. Power off and power on, it will bootup normally.
View 3 Replies View Relatedabout every third time I start my computer I get an error message generic host process for win 32 has encountered a problem and needs to close and it gives me a choice to debug, send error report or close, if I choose debug sometimes everything will be ok and sometimes it won't if I choose don't send or close nothing will work and I have to restart my computer by killing the power strip, some times I even have to do this after clicking on debug. can anyone help me out on this problem

I ran out of memory in it, so I am attempting to set it back to its original setup using the System CD and the Recovery discs (3) of them.I did as instructed, and reset the system to boot from the CD ROM and it went through the process and got through disc 1, but after inserting disc two, it simply shuts down and tries to reboot, but can't of course because it hasn't finished the process.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI ran the System Recovery by going into the Program Files and Compaq instead of using the CDs.I thought I would be prompted to insert the CD once the program started but I wasn't. It took about 20 min. to complete. That was a red flag to me because it was so quick. It restarted and brought me to the registration process. Once through that,I was at a screen that basically said I was done and in order to go to my desktop, I should click on the "Finish" button.it booted up again with the 1st CD in the drive, there was a black screen that prompted me to type in whether I wanted a Restore, Full Recovery or Quit.I couldn't type anything in because, my keyboard didn't work. I ejected the CD, shut it down cold again, re-booted it and my keyboard started working again but I ended up back at the registration screen where it froze initially.

View 14 Replies View RelatedLet me preface this by saying I'm a fairly advanced user, a software developer by trade, and I've been digging through google and ms tech support pages trying to find a solution to this. The last time I used this machine it was on SP2. I gave it to my wife well over a year ago and have no idea when or IF SP3 was installed. Of course I don't have the OS disks anymore. She brought it to me yesterday with the dreaded BSOD. I can't be sure what triggered it. Maybe a failed SP3 install, maybe some Chemdraw trial software...I can't be sure.
So I acquired an XP SP3 disc and ran the repair. I got a new BSOD about some missing executable, which I was able to install in the recovery console after entering an empty password. That got me back to my original BSOD so no luck. So my theory is that maybe SP3 is the problem and procede to acquire an XP SP2 disc instead, which happened to be a Dell distribution disc, which was probably a bad idea, but it seemed to work as any other disc would. Now I get a new BSOD telling me I'm missing msvcrt.dll. Which makes sense because EVERY repair that I've done, regardless of disc or service pack, has been unable to copy msvcrt.dll AND msvcp60.dll. Although only after repairing to SP2, do I get the specific BSOD message that this file is missing....
I ran a recovery on my computer and now I get a message, "NTLDR is Compressed press atl. ctrl. del to restart." When I restart it gives the same message each time.

A few days ago I had the motherboard replaced as it was bad. It was done at a service place in Tijuana. They had to reformat the hard disk and reinstall my versions of XP and my upgrade to XP Pro. Then I have been updating via the internet to the Windows updates including Service Pac 3.

It went though the process, rebooted, and returned to the setup process. In the middle of the setup, while installing devices, the computer froze again. I have tried repeating the process to no avail. I have tried turning off some of the not so necessary things in the BIOS and trying it.

In the processes it shows the spooler.exe using the power alternating with the System(at bottom of list) - but mostly the spooler.exe.
