Replace Computer 2000 Pro With Home

Jan 12, 2008

I just got a laptop that is now running 2000 professional (intel pent. 2). My main computer has XP home (intel pent.3) They are both Compaq's. I would like to replace the 2000 on the laptop with xp. I have the install (retail purchase) disc for the xp. It will be a fairly long process using the install disc due to the updates required. Can I download the XP and other desired programs from my main computer onto the laptop (it has all required updates etc.) If so, could someone outline the process involved. I have a files and settings transfer wizard on the main computer that should be of help in the process. I also have Nero that would allow me to burn a bootable disc if necessary.

I want to put the original XP Home disc back on my computer to replace the XP Pro already installed. I get a message saying that the one I want to install is older than the one being currently used and that all settings will be lost. How can I safely install the old operating system (XP Home) without losing my data or installed software applications?

Dec 11, 2005

A new laptop and it came with Windows XP Home edition already installed. I can't to change it to Pro instead but when I try to install it, I get a message saying: Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is newer than the version on the CD. Warning: If you decide to delete the newer version of Windows that is currently installed on your computer, the files and settings cannot be recovered. So how exactly do I uninstall XP? When I go to Add/Remove Programs, there is no where to uninstall it.

Upgrade To WIN Home From Win 2000 Pro?

Mar 5, 2007

I want to upgrade my OS from WIN 2000 Pro SP 4 to WIN XP Home SP 2. I have a retailer who offers this upgrade, but does not specify if you can upgrade from WIN 2000 Pro. In fact, they don't speciy what update options you have with this upgrade pakage (Form - To). I have e-mailed them asking if this upgrade will work for me. But, as yet, they haven't replied to my query. Will this this upgrade work for me?

Change Home To 2000 Pro

Jul 30, 2007

I'm not very familiar with installing Operating Systems, and I don't want to screw this up. My computer is slow with XP Home ( but still usable ), so I'd like to do this properly. Also, do you think it'd be good to go back to 2000 if it works fine? I've heard there are many security flaws with 2000 Professional.

Switching From 2000 Pro To Home

Dec 1, 2006

What a pain. It says that upgrading from windows 2000 to XP home is not supported and when I go to reformat, it doesnt allow me to reformat the "partitioned space". It gives me no other option than to install XP on the same partition as Windows 2000, and then tells me it isn't advisable to do it. Whats up with that, and how do I get rid of 2000 so I can properly install XP home?I've unfortunately got XP partially installed, and when I reboot it will go to the black screen... but then asks do I want to start up with xp or 2000, so I start with 2000 and, well, frankly I am sick of this and just want it to install. If I'm going to screw around with this all the time, trying to keep these dang computers functioning, then I really need to take some classes, sheesh.

Partitioning And Installing 2000 Pro After Home

Aug 18, 2006

I'm an intermediate user just beginning to study for MS sys admin. Both my laptops run XP home, but I have 2000 Pro from when I had a desktop...which I unfortunately gave to a family member. I'd like to install this on one of my laptops because the Pro capabilities will allow me to "study" a little better than just home XP. At any rate, I'd like the experience of configuring everything. will I lose everything in XP if I set up a partition to install 2000 Pro? Is it even possible to install both of them without installing 2000 first? The XP came pre-loaded on my computer but I do have a disk.

Icons Disappeared My Computer-Desktop W-2000

Apr 11, 2006

This is frustrating. The last time I shut the computer down everything was fine. Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep. When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Wow. Most of the icons were gone and replaced by that MS arrow icon. There was even a folder that wouldn't come up or show anything.Well, lets see. My system is 1 year old and is a generic one. Intel MOBO (915 I think), P4@3.2, 1gRam, SATA HD 15% used, Windows 2000Pro W/SP4.

2000 Professional And 2000 Server

Aug 17, 2007

Am I right in thinking that they are both pretty similar except that server has support for multiple processors and extra network related tools and facilities. The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? As a bit of background information: I work for a small company which supplies temperature monitoring equipment which needs to be networked. I've been told that it has been tested on Windows 2000 server but not on Window 2000 professional.

Home Computer Acting Weird / Pop-ups, To The Point My Computer Freezes

Dec 2, 2004

I went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.

How To Replace A Counterfeit XP?

Jun 25, 2008

An older friend got a CPU given to him so he can access email. Only problem is that apparently the Windows XP on it isn't geniune. I don't mind buying the XP Home Edition and replacing it but have some questions about how to do the replacement. Am I better to click the "Resolve Now" link and buy it from Microsoft? Or should I just pick up one at the store? Then, do I need to remove the bogus copy befroe I try to load the real one? If I load the real one without doing anything about the bogus one will the real one take care of it? Would the one I could purchase online automaticallly resolve these issues? I'm not real concerned about losing his word documents - there are few. I expect I may have to reload his internet connection software. I'm worried that this could be above my IT skill-level but I feel it needs to be resolved.

Have been told that a clean reinstall of the XP Pro should be done every 6-12 month, as any windows will diminish performance over time. I have both Product Keys. Both machines have a 500 GB E drive as secondary storage, and they have 80 GB and 250 GB C drives respectively. 1. How can I obtain a replacement XP Pro to make a clean re-installation. 2. Replace Existing HD With New One - Use Original Cd?

Instead of trashing the machine, I would like to just purchase an entirely new HD for this machine. I am guessing that when purchasing a new HD that it does NOT already come with an O/S already installed. If this guess is correct, my question is this:Can I use the original O/S Reinstallation CD that came with the machine to get the O/S installed on the new HD? ORDo I have to purchase the O/S along with the new internal HD? If more information is needed before an answer can be provided, please let me know what is needed.
