Unable To Install To Replace Vista
Jan 19, 2008I recently purchased a new laptop that came with Vista Basic preinstalled! I have been getting numerous error messages and system crashes, all which state that there is a Vista error and it needs to exit the program. Very annoying. I want to remove the Vista and use XP Pro.

But I'm more familiar with XP, it's what I use at work, and I'd like to benefit from the years of wisdom and optimization that have gone into a mature operating system.So I also bought a copy of XP Pro SP2, and am trying to wipe Vista and install XP. But when I boot from the XP Install CD, it gets through loading drivers, then to "Starting Windows", then crashes to bluescreen. This happens before I can get to safe mode or anything.

Sep 17, 2009I'm trying to make a dual boot system Vista/XP with my HP Media Center purchased in 2007 with Vista pre-installed. Inside Vista I created the partition for XP (disk D and rebooted with the 'XP Pro SP2' inside. After selecting its correct partition for installing it copies all files on hard disk and it reboots in order to start its installation, upon rebooting and starting first time from hard disk, it says that there is an error in the system and stops. If I install only XP on the system it works correctly even though some newest hardware is not recognized. I had already made a dual boot two years ago with a 2007 XP Student Edition and it smoothly. If it is due to the XP version being too old that maybe cannot deal with the boot record created by Vista
Or perhaps such an old XP cannot recognize a boot hard disk that is not C:?
Is there a way to bypass this point (perhaps fixing the boot record) in order to continue correctly the installation?

So far I created a partition on the same drive (C: ) as Vista and installed XP on it. how do I choose between Vista and XP when my computer boots up? Have been told that a clean reinstall of the XP Pro should be done every 6-12 month, as any windows will diminish performance over time. I have both Product Keys. Dec 7, 2007Hi All. My problem is this. I have a legal copy of XP Pro (OEM) installed on this computer. The hardware is very dated (about 6yrs, AMD 1800+, AGP 2, PC2100 ram) and I want to upgrade to new stuff. So being a good citizen I called Microsoft and ask the question, "How do I legally install the legal copy on my new equipment while uninstalling it from the old?" The old hardware is not going to be reused, just to old and slow. Two reps from M$ told me that I could not use my legal copy with the new hardware while one said that I could but had to uninstall it somehow while online so they could verify and activate it for the new stuff. They never got around to telling me how to do that. I take that as a no that they won't allow the 2nd use. So what OS would you choose at the moment? I think I am going to try to reuse the current copy. If that doesn't work I'll repurchase, but which? XP Pro, XP Home, XP 64, Vista, Vista home, Vista 64? I understand that SP1 for Vista has gone into beta so it shouldn't be long to get that. If anyone has some input or experience I would greatly apperciate it. Does anyone think that this is wrong? I'm not trying to cheat M$, as I said it is a legal copy. Any Microsoft employees out there? If I want to reuse a piece of hardware no prob right? Seems to me to be the same thing. Anyway tell me what you think and thanks.

Replace Existing HD With New One - Use Original Cd?
Sep 4, 2009I have a Dell Dimension Desktop that became infected with a pretty nasty virus. I have had to remove the infected HD from the machine. Instead of trashing the machine, I would like to just purchase an entirely new HD for this machine. I am guessing that when purchasing a new HD that it does NOT already come with an O/S already installed. If this guess is correct, my question is this:Can I use the original O/S Reinstallation CD that came with the machine to get the O/S installed on the new HD? ORDo I have to purchase the O/S along with the new internal HD? If more information is needed before an answer can be provided, please let me know what is needed.

Aug 27, 2008To give you the (sort of) quick version: usually, I'm fairly careful about where I go and what I do online to avoid malware. However, I picked *something* up a few days back that spewed it all over my hard drive. Ran SAS, cleared a ton of stuff, and restarted, only to find my PC in a boot loop. Tried repairing windows incase SAS deleted an important .dll or something, but ended up having to completely reformat. Installed AVG immediately upon reformat, and everything's been fine the past few days.
However, last night something happened, and I don't know what triggered it. All of my icons (desktop, folders, start menu), were replaced by the generic windows icon. I'm able to click on most of the shortcuts and reassign the original icon, but for certain items like the recycling bin, I'm unable to do so (and attempting to restore the default under desktop options does nothing, either). While it's not that big an issue at the moment, I'm afraid there's something more going on here. although an additional AVG scan showed nothing but some tracking cookies.
System Wont Restart Normally - Replace This HDD?

She's been having trouble with it restarting on her a bunch lately, but she was always able to at least get to the Desktop before it rebooted without any error message or countdown (like the 0:60 blaster countdown).When I was finally able to take a look at the computer, it won't even get to the windows loading screen. I'm thinking the HDD is dead or not able to boot from some reason. The drive will not boot. Gives a blue error message after the bios POST. Bios can check the drive and it fails. I tried putting a disc in which I 'thought' was a bootable PartitionMagic disc, but it's not booting to it. So I'll try using a bootable copy of Partition Magic and see what it is before we buy a new drive.
