Possible To Run Upgrade And Replace Original XP

Oct 19, 2005

Long story short, I replaced my friend's motherboard in her eMachines computer. I've been told that we'd need a new copy of XP because the new MoBo won't be compatible. The copy we got ended up being the upgrade version. Is it possible to run the upgrade and replace the original XP with this new one?

Replace Existing HD With New One - Use Original Cd?

Sep 4, 2009

I have a Dell Dimension Desktop that became infected with a pretty nasty virus. I have had to remove the infected HD from the machine. Instead of trashing the machine, I would like to just purchase an entirely new HD for this machine. I am guessing that when purchasing a new HD that it does NOT already come with an O/S already installed. If this guess is correct, my question is this:Can I use the original O/S Reinstallation CD that came with the machine to get the O/S installed on the new HD? ORDo I have to purchase the O/S along with the new internal HD? If more information is needed before an answer can be provided, please let me know what is needed.

Files & Transfer Wizard To Copy C - Drive Replace Original E Drive

Jan 12, 2006

This is really a question more than a problem. I'm running a PC with 2 HDs. I am changing the boot drive C: for a larger disk. Now ordinarily I would use a backup program like Ghost or whatever. Now my situation is slightly different in that most of my startup programs are installed on my second HD E:, the C: drive being the boot drive with XP installed.

What my intention is. Is to take out drive E: Then replace that with my new drive. Then I was going to boot in Safe Mode and use the Windows Files & Transfer wizard to copy the C: drive to The new drive. The last thing to do then is swap the C: with the newly installed drive and replace the original E: drive. I hope that all makes sense.

How To Replace A Counterfeit XP?

Jun 25, 2008

An older friend got a CPU given to him so he can access email. Only problem is that apparently the Windows XP on it isn't geniune. I don't mind buying the XP Home Edition and replacing it but have some questions about how to do the replacement. Am I better to click the "Resolve Now" link and buy it from Microsoft? Or should I just pick up one at the store? Then, do I need to remove the bogus copy befroe I try to load the real one? If I load the real one without doing anything about the bogus one will the real one take care of it? Would the one I could purchase online automaticallly resolve these issues? I'm not real concerned about losing his word documents - there are few. I expect I may have to reload his internet connection software. I'm worried that this could be above my IT skill-level but I feel it needs to be resolved.

Without CD Replace Preinstalled Pro,

Sep 6, 2010

I have two HP-Compaq PC's, where one crashed the C drive and the other runs extreme slow. Both came with XP Pro pre-installed and no CD's. Both are at level SP3. Have been told that a clean reinstall of the XP Pro should be done every 6-12 month, as any windows will diminish performance over time. I have both Product Keys. Both machines have a 500 GB E drive as secondary storage, and they have 80 GB and 250 GB C drives respectively. 1. How can I obtain a replacement XP Pro to make a clean re-installation. 2. Any special instructions to do so.

Unable To Replace Icons?

Aug 1, 2007

First of all IE is currently running with add-ons disabled and in the tools menu the 'manage add-ons' is gray not giving me the option to change it. How do I change that so that I don't get that alert everytime I sign on the internet. Secondly there are no icons going to the desktop. I don't understand this. Even when you tell it or drag it there, it doesn't go???? The startup menu in msconfig is ridiculously long. I'm going to start running scans while I wait for instructions.

All Shortcut Icons Replace?

Aug 27, 2008

To give you the (sort of) quick version: usually, I'm fairly careful about where I go and what I do online to avoid malware. However, I picked *something* up a few days back that spewed it all over my hard drive. Ran SAS, cleared a ton of stuff, and restarted, only to find my PC in a boot loop. Tried repairing windows incase SAS deleted an important .dll or something, but ended up having to completely reformat. Installed AVG immediately upon reformat, and everything's been fine the past few days.

However, last night something happened, and I don't know what triggered it. All of my icons (desktop, folders, start menu), were replaced by the generic windows icon. I'm able to click on most of the shortcuts and reassign the original icon, but for certain items like the recycling bin, I'm unable to do so (and attempting to restore the default under desktop options does nothing, either). While it's not that big an issue at the moment, I'm afraid there's something more going on here. although an additional AVG scan showed nothing but some tracking cookies.

System Wont Restart Normally - Replace This HDD?

Jun 10, 2005

Friends computer, Windows XP Home. She's been having trouble with it restarting on her a bunch lately, but she was always able to at least get to the Desktop before it rebooted without any error message or countdown (like the 0:60 blaster countdown). When I was finally able to take a look at the computer, it won't even get to the windows loading screen. I'm thinking the HDD is dead or not able to boot from some reason. The drive will not boot. Gives a blue error message after the bios POST. Bios can check the drive and it fails. I tried putting a disc in which I 'thought' was a bootable PartitionMagic disc, but it's not booting to it. So I'll try using a bootable copy of Partition Magic and see what it is before we buy a new drive.

Replace Computer 2000 Pro With Home

Jan 12, 2008

I just got a laptop that is now running 2000 professional (intel pent. 2). My main computer has XP home (intel pent.3) They are both Compaq's. I would like to replace the 2000 on the laptop with xp. I have the install (retail purchase) disc for the xp. It will be a fairly long process using the install disc due to the updates required. Can I download the XP and other desired programs from my main computer onto the laptop (it has all required updates etc.) If so, could someone outline the process involved. I have a files and settings transfer wizard on the main computer that should be of help in the process. I also have Nero that would allow me to burn a bootable disc if necessary.

Installed OS - Possible To Replace Hard Drive

Aug 24, 2008

In addition to my other posting here, I want to ask you professionals, if it is possible to mirror my existing hard drive onto a much larger hard drive? My partition C became way too small over the years, the Windows XP files have blown up their size. Partition D (which contains all installed programs) is still fine. But I was never able to use software like "Partition Magic" to adjust the space between these two partitions. So I might just have to buy a new hard drive. But I want - I even HAVE - to keep the installed XP the way it is now. Lots of software installed. So I wonder, if there is any way just to "mirror" the existing version of XP onto a new hard drive, and then just to exchange the old hard drive with the new one?

Replace C Drive With Larger Disk

The C drive is used strictly for WinXP OS and applications, of which there are many and they are all very large. While I'm fully expecting this to be a tedious task, I would welcome any advice on how the process can be made less tedious and very safe. Note that the C drive is an 18 GB SCSI-3 supported by an Adaptec U-160 SCSI adapter, which has performed reliably and is very speedy.

Replace Old Files When Copying A Folder

Jun 7, 2008

when you copy a folder in Windows XP, the Confirm Folder Replace dialogue appears, which only gives you the option to replace files one at a time, replace them all, or opt out (No). How do you keep the old files in the folder and add the new ones that are not there already? For example, if I am backing up My Music folder and there is 7 GB of music sitting on my external hard drive, how can I add only the 200 MB of music files that have been added since the last time I backed up this folder? I remember this used to be possible in previous versions of windows. The dialogue in XP, the way it is set up, you have to replace all the files.

Trying To Replace Vista With Pro - Install Bluescreens

I bought a new Dell one week too late to get it delivered with XP, and am now the proud owner of a system with Vista Home Premium. But I'm more familiar with XP, it's what I use at work, and I'd like to benefit from the years of wisdom and optimization that have gone into a mature operating system. So I also bought a copy of XP Pro SP2, and am trying to wipe Vista and install XP. But when I boot from the XP Install CD, it gets through loading drivers, then to "Starting Windows", then crashes to bluescreen. This happens before I can get to safe mode or anything.

OEM CD Key / Re-install Without Original OEM CD?

Aug 30, 2007

I am currently working on a computer for a friend. It's a Lenovo desktop. 3000 series I believe. There is supposed to be a recovery partition on this machine but it is screwed and I do not have the recovery CDs. Getting them from Lenovo seems to be out of the question as they said they would only send them to me if the computer was still under warranty.I am trying to reinstall XP Pro. I have a valid OEM product key on the side of the machine. I figured it was OEM because the key would not work with any ordinary XP Pro CD.Does anyone know of a way to reinstall XP Pro on this machine using the CD key on the side without the recovery CD?

Use The Recovery Console To Replace The Start Menu

The space at the bottom of the start menu has not been removed with the methods i have tried. I used registry cleaners, tried system restore, tried all available options in task bar & start menu options all with no change. I read an article on how to do a system repair, in the article it said that programs might be affected and would have to be reinstalled if they didn't work correctly. My question is can I use the recovery console to replace the start menu and if so I will need instruction on how to do the proceedure as I'm basically novice and dont know the proceedures.
