Replace Old Files When Copying A Folder
Jun 7, 2008
when you copy a folder in Windows XP, the Confirm Folder Replace dialogue appears, which only gives you the option to replace files one at a time, replace them all, or opt out (No). How do you keep the old files in the folder and add the new ones that are not there already? For example, if I am backing up My Music folder and there is 7 GB of music sitting on my external hard drive, how can I add only the 200 MB of music files that have been added since the last time I backed up this folder? I remember this used to be possible in previous versions of windows. The dialogue in XP, the way it is set up, you have to replace all the files.

On my D: drive, I have several folders (500 something I think) containing mp3s that I have ripped from my CD collection. What I want to do is transfer all the mp3s contained in these folders to My Music (I have just upgraded to Windows xp media center edition). Rather than going through each folder manually, and going through the time consuming process of selecting, copying and pasting every mp3 in each folder, is there any way I can select all of the mp3s in all of the folders automatically, and have them copied over?

My system totally crashed. I reformatted the drive and reinstall XP. Well, everything seems to be going along just fine until I get to 70% finished with copying installation files and I get message after message saying that the files cannot be copied.

I'm trying to back up some stuff to an external hard drive. And there are errors in movies that I have ripped (because I either forget to put them back in the case or they get lost) some movies and whenever I try to move the video file (ripped int a AUDI0_TS file and a VIDEO_TS file) I have an error box where the title of the window in the blue bar says "Error Copying File or Folder" and in the window (the gray part) it says "Cannot copy VTS_01_2" Data error (cyclic redundancy check).". And then I click the "OK" button and it stops the transfer. The VTS_01_2 is sometimes replaced with whatever file that cannot be transferred or that is causing the problem. I used DVDShrink and DVD43 to back them up. I am running Windows XP sp3 and transferring them onto a 300 GB hard drive.

I have an executable file on my desktop. When I move my mouse over it, it displays tooltip of ile(Description,File Version,Date created, size and company). Now when I replace this existing file with a new file with the same file name, but with different file version or description and move the mouse over it again, though the file is displayed, it doesn't display the correct file version even after multiple refresh is done.

I have a little problem maybe someone has a answer for me. I have a WD 250 GB HDD labeled as the D Drive. Well this morning I cannot get to it from windows at all a error message pops up saying MBR is corrupted or unreadable and that is it, the drive has worked flawlessly until the past week. Whenever I copied a file to it then tried to view or play it it wouldn't let me into the folder where i placed it saying a similiar message the folder has become corrupted and locked me out as to say. Today the system doesn't even recognize the drive at all.

I suspect we did not allow the write operation to finish but why this should affect boot up is beyond me.WE were copying a Folder containing word docs and gif files using right click/Send to/CD Drive. The files were copied ready for burning in the usual way and the burned to the CD.Being anxious to check the copy my partner clicked on the ready to burn icon instead of exiting and looking at the drive and the system froze. the only way was to power down and now it will not boot.It hangs on the windows logo screen (with the blue horizontal scrolling bar) and eventually the screen goes blank.I booted to safe mode and the screen hung at the end of the files loading, at least I thought it hung but in fact i had not waited long enough because on the second attempt it booted to safe mode after 4 minutes.Device manager shows no problems so rebooted as normal. Got the usual windows has encountered a problem screen and selected safe mode again. This time it took 25 minutes to boot.

I'm trying to install Win XP pro onto a brand new hard drive. I'm able to fully format it to NTFS without any problem. Once the format is complete, it then begins to copy over all the Windows system files from the disk to drive. It gets between 70-80% complete when it starts to encounter errors copying files over.
I've used two seperate rom drives as well as 3 different installation disks and I get the same error at the same point in time after every attempt.

My old XP crashed 2 days ago (All thx to WIndows Auto Update). I tried to use the Windows XP original CD but after repairing, it just stuck at the loading bar with an error message saying that "System32drivers tfs.sys is missing or corrupted".Using the recovery console, I copied the ntfs.sys from the CD to replace the new one, but it didn't solve the problem.
Tired & Frustrated, I decided to install a new one on D:. Now my new XP worked great, but I kinda need all the program that I installed on the old XP back. They're all there on my hard drive with my old XP system. So I guess if there's someway for me to copy all the registration files from my old XP system to my new one, I can run all my programs. I'm really appreciate if anyone can help me with this.

I am trying to install Windows XP Prof. and it keeps failing to copy over files right after a format. It never is the same files, it has been about 15-20 different files on about 5-6 tries of installation. It asks you if you want to retry and sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, sometimes you have to skip. It says it could be the windows disk, but the windows disk works fine in my test machine and I can install windows perfectly over there.

I'm trying to write a batch file that will copy files from a folder on the desktop to various files on the C drive. From what I understand it should be like this: copy c:documents and settings\%userprofile%desktopinstallfilename.txt c:windowsfilename.txt
with %userprofile% in place of the actual user profile name because it will be different each time I run this batch file. This, however, is not working.

desktop computer crashed (motherboard) and I purchased her a new laptop. I am trying to copy her files from her "My Documents" directory - I have converted the old HD into an external drive - but it is telling me that there is nothing there. She was an Administrator on the old PC and she is an Administrator on the new laptop. What am I doing wrong? What have I not done? I don't want to lose two years of info. Even the backups will not work.

I am trying to install Windows Xp on my computer but it doesnt install. I am having problem with the copying files. I formatted the root drive C: so viruses can be removed, but still it doesnt install. Whenever the setup is copying files it stucks on 56% and then gives an error that the file is missing press enter to retry or esc to skip. I pressed enter 5 or 6 times and then it gives error pfn_chk_list and my computer restarts. The problem was that my xp was running fine the other day but then i saw a error physical dump memory error. After that the windows was booting but wasnt showing any startup screen and kept constantly restarting. So i thought it would be best to format my 400gb western digital hard drive and try again, but the copying error came again. I have made four partitions of my hdd. Please give me a solution to this and reply as soon as possible.

First I attempted to install Win XP Home from a cdrom to my C partition (20 gigs, partitioned from either my 120 or 160 gig (forget which) hard drive). However it kept botching up and giving me messages about files not copying properly or being corrupted etc. I cycled through a variety of XP install cds (son's, wife's, etc) without any luck. I tried using either the CDRW or DVD drive, in case one might have been faulty...no luck, however.I figured all of this business probably gunked up the works on my C partition, so I thought I'd better format it and wipe it clean, which I did using a Win98 SE boot CD and loading FDISK. I wanted to partition the 20 gig into 2 x 10 gig so that I could limit the C partition to pretty much only Win XP. Silly me...! Turned out I made a 2 MB partition with the remainder of the partition seemingly unavailable to me...couldn't see it when attempting to view partition information.

I'm wondering if it's safe to do that. I would guess that individual documents wouldn't be infected. I wouldn't want to infect my new computer. Afterwards, I plan to reformat the drive and re-install the operating system. The infected machine is an older one, so I may use it for simple word processing or older games or give it away. I know that reformating won't destroy old files beyond recovery but I'd hope it would take care of any viruses. I don't have any personal economic info on it since I haven't used a program like Quicken or Money.
I know the machine has at least one virus (about.com) and may have others since many of the programs that should take care of this stopped working after I installed Windows Service Pack 2. I gather others had similar problems after doing the same. Perhaps the most annoying is that I can't access the icons on the bottom of the screen. That includes files you minimize.

I have a Dell 2350 Pentium4 1.8 gig Running WinXP Servicepack 1. When trying to install service pack2 thru automatic updates, the installation seems to be going fine. Then, while copying new files to the computer (after backing up and setting a restore point) I get a message that says "Generic host proces for Win32 Services encountered a problem and needs to close". The file copying continues in the backround. The standard message asks if I want to send the error to Microsoft. I send it and the file copying continues. After five more minutes copying files an error message pops up:"Access is denied". The system requires a click on "OK" and the old system is restored. I have tried to install several times with the same results.

I have had a long long running windows explorer issue in which i get very frequent crashes of windows explorer when doing any of the following... opening folders, copying files, opening trash, empty trash, search, multiple tasks of any kind with folders - all cause a system freeze which can only be resolved by ending the explorer.exe task and then running a fresh explorer.exe.Can i re-install explorer and its components to ensure its stability ? also should windows explorer be rock solid ? Maybe this is a windows pro issue ?

The power failed during the "copying files" stage. Now when I try to reinstall it it says that "Setup cannot find a previous version of Windows installled on your computer." Then it wants me to insert a full version of xp in the cd-rom drive.
After I did this, it says that it cannot read the cd, or that its invalid, I tried it on another cd (same os and everything except its service pack 1) and then it says the same thing.

It has been a long time since I used a command line and the command is complex. I have set the command follows........ fastconv /V /S:source store /D:destination store /T:temp store /I left out the /I switch so all files in the Dir source store would be extracted. Same thing happens when I put in /I switch.I named the Dir. source store, destination store and temp store. When I run it I get instructions on usage and a command prompt What am I missing?

Got new parts for PC upgrade. All parts new (including cables) but recycled HDD and DVD/CD-ROM.All bits connected and powered up last night in about 10 mins. Put Windows XP CD in, went into setup/ reformat process then PC needed rebooting to continue with Windows setup. Fine. or so I thought. rebooted, went into "Please press any key to boot from CD". IF pressed any key, went through the whole reformat, copy setup files etc. ELSE, just hangs on that screenie. No error messages or anything!Seems to me like it's gone into a loop, and not running the Windows set-up files copied into the HDD.
