Upgrade To WIN Home From Win 2000 Pro?

Mar 5, 2007

I want to upgrade my OS from WIN 2000 Pro SP 4 to WIN XP Home SP 2. I have a retailer who offers this upgrade, but does not specify if you can upgrade from WIN 2000 Pro. In fact, they don't speciy what update options you have with this upgrade pakage (Form - To). I have e-mailed them asking if this upgrade will work for me. But, as yet, they haven't replied to my query. Will this this upgrade work for me?

Change Home To 2000 Pro

Jul 30, 2007

I'm not very familiar with installing Operating Systems, and I don't want to screw this up. My computer is slow with XP Home ( but still usable ), so I'd like to do this properly. Also, do you think it'd be good to go back to 2000 if it works fine? I've heard there are many security flaws with 2000 Professional.

Switching From 2000 Pro To Home

Dec 1, 2006

What a pain. It says that upgrading from windows 2000 to XP home is not supported and when I go to reformat, it doesnt allow me to reformat the "partitioned space". It gives me no other option than to install XP on the same partition as Windows 2000, and then tells me it isn't advisable to do it. Whats up with that, and how do I get rid of 2000 so I can properly install XP home?I've unfortunately got XP partially installed, and when I reboot it will go to the black screen... but then asks do I want to start up with xp or 2000, so I start with 2000 and, well, frankly I am sick of this and just want it to install. If I'm going to screw around with this all the time, trying to keep these dang computers functioning, then I really need to take some classes, sheesh.

Compaq Laptop: Which OS 2000 Pro Or Home

I was given an old Laptop from a National Canadian Bank. Here are the following statistics, It currently has Windows 2000 Professional but since it was from a Bank it has quite a bit of Bank related Software and Network settings. I was looking to format the drive and install Windows XP. I was told in another post on the forum that perhaps my laptop might not be the optimal to my system. Which Operating system should I install on this system?

Replace Computer 2000 Pro With Home

Jan 12, 2008

I just got a laptop that is now running 2000 professional (intel pent. 2). My main computer has XP home (intel pent.3) They are both Compaq's. I would like to replace the 2000 on the laptop with xp. I have the install (retail purchase) disc for the xp. It will be a fairly long process using the install disc due to the updates required. Can I download the XP and other desired programs from my main computer onto the laptop (it has all required updates etc.) If so, could someone outline the process involved. I have a files and settings transfer wizard on the main computer that should be of help in the process. I also have Nero that would allow me to burn a bootable disc if necessary.

Partitioning And Installing 2000 Pro After Home

Aug 18, 2006

I'm an intermediate user just beginning to study for MS sys admin. Both my laptops run XP home, but I have 2000 Pro from when I had a desktop...which I unfortunately gave to a family member. I'd like to install this on one of my laptops because the Pro capabilities will allow me to "study" a little better than just home XP. At any rate, I'd like the experience of configuring everything. will I lose everything in XP if I set up a partition to install 2000 Pro? Is it even possible to install both of them without installing 2000 first? The XP came pre-loaded on my computer but I do have a disk.

2000 Professional And 2000 Server

Aug 17, 2007

Am I right in thinking that they are both pretty similar except that server has support for multiple processors and extra network related tools and facilities. The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? As a bit of background information: I work for a small company which supplies temperature monitoring equipment which needs to be networked. I've been told that it has been tested on Windows 2000 server but not on Window 2000 professional.

I have an EEE pc here, with only 2gb SSD inside, and running windows! However when I try to convert my external 2.5" IDE 40gb HDD, the 'convert to dynamic disk' is grayed out. I don't know what to make of this, and have found nothing much specific enough on google so far.

Not Convert / Upgrade Fat 32 / Nfts

Jul 24, 2005

I run XP Pro SP1 with Fat 32 and when I try to back my 80gb hard drive to an external 80gb hard drive, I run into file size limitations. Since a full back up is over 5 hours, I usually try to run it when I'm not around but it stops to await a prompt from me to proceed to the "next media" In the documentation for the back up software, it discusses NFTS. For some reason, I chose not to convert to NFTS when I upgraded to XP but can't remember what it was at the time. What are the pros or cons with NFTS as opposed to Fat32 and what problems may I encounter with a conversion?

Convert To NTFS - FAT32

Dec 27, 2005

Yesterday I upgraded my old computer to Xp, but I did so on only one partition, and I left It at FAT 32 just to see if it would work. Now Iam going to convert to NTFS because everything went fine and now I just want to free up space and reformatt the hard drive, basically getting rid of all the information on it and starting fresh. I just want to know if I can reformatt, and the steps for doing so if I can.I only have one partition on this computer that is why I am concerned about the reformatting thing. I tried to formatt when it was still FAT32 but it was saying that i needed to close all remaining things that were using this system.? I am going to convert to NTFS reguardless I just want to free up all my disk space that is being stolen from the old 98 system files.

Convert From FAT32 To NTFS

Sep 6, 2003

Convert from fat32 to ntfs:From the command line: CONVERT C: /FS:NTFSHowever, the best way in my opinion is a 3rd party product such as Partition Magic (version 7.0 or later). Lets you do everything from within the GUI and it's a delight to work with. Without Partition Magic, this is a one-way process (you cannot convert back to FAT without a reformat)

Convert Vs Format NTFS

Jul 20, 2005

I already converted my HD from FAT32 to NFTS. I ran the "fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo c:" and it shows my cluster size of 4096 KB. BootIT NG also confirms the 4KB cluster size.So..Is that all I needed to do? Is there an advantage of formatting a HD directly as NTFS? Is the convert command (with the 4KB cluster size) enough or will a re-format give better security, performance etc.

Is It Danger To Convert FAT32 Into NTFS

Want To Convert To FAT32 - Reformatt Type

Mar 23, 2005

I installed windows XP on a HP Pavilion with a 20 GB HD using NTFS then found out I should have used FAT32 on a HD that is less than 32GB in size. Also read that I cant go back to FAT32. I was reading on bootdisk.com that I can do a clean install and delete existing partition and when asked to reformat type in a number less than 32GB then go from there. Will this work? My main question is should I bother and why? It seems to work ok using NTFS although a little slower than my brand new Dell. Its just plain fast.
