I'm not very familiar with installing Operating Systems, and I don't want to screw this up. My computer is slow with XP Home ( but still usable ), so I'd like to do this properly. Also, do you think it'd be good to go back to 2000 if it works fine? I've heard there are many security flaws with 2000 Professional.

I want to upgrade my OS from WIN 2000 Pro SP 4 to WIN XP Home SP 2. I have a retailer who offers this upgrade, but does not specify if you can upgrade from WIN 2000 Pro. In fact, they don't speciy what update options you have with this upgrade pakage (Form - To). I have e-mailed them asking if this upgrade will work for me. But, as yet, they haven't replied to my query. Will this this upgrade work for me?

I thought I would be able to just put the cd in and start the process but it keeps giving me an error and says that This version of windows is not compatible, What do I need to do to get XP home to install on this pc?
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhat a pain. It says that upgrading from windows 2000 to XP home is not supported and when I go to reformat, it doesnt allow me to reformat the "partitioned space". It gives me no other option than to install XP on the same partition as Windows 2000, and then tells me it isn't advisable to do it. Whats up with that, and how do I get rid of 2000 so I can properly install XP home?I've unfortunately got XP partially installed, and when I reboot it will go to the black screen... but then asks do I want to start up with xp or 2000, so I start with 2000 and, well, frankly I am sick of this and just want it to install.If I'm going to screw around with this all the time, trying to keep these dang computers functioning, then I really need to take some classes, sheesh.

Here are the following statistics, It currently has Windows 2000 Professional but since it was from a Bank it has quite a bit of Bank related Software and Network settings. I was looking to format the drive and install Windows XP. I was told in another post on the forum that perhaps my laptop might not be the optimal to my system. I would like to replace the 2000 on the laptop with xp. I have the install (retail purchase) disc for the xp. It will be a fairly long process using the install disc due to the updates required. Can I download the XP and other desired programs from my main computer onto the laptop (it has all required updates etc.) If so, could someone outline the process involved. I have a files and settings transfer wizard on the main computer that should be of help in the process. I also have Nero that would allow me to burn a bootable disc if necessary.

I'd like to install this on one of my laptops because the Pro capabilities will allow me to "study" a little better than just home XP. At any rate, I'd like the experience of configuring everything. will I lose everything in XP if I set up a partition to install 2000 Pro? Is it even possible to install both of them without installing 2000 first? The XP came pre-loaded on my computer but I do have a disk.

It does not show the network ID option and/or the mshome workgroup area is grayed out and I cannot change this option at all. I ran all updates and the machine is sp2. (How much it will hold, kind of memory, etc) what I need to know for sure (I guess for some support) All I have to do is turn her computer off take out the 128Mb put in the two sticks of 256 and reboot the computer should recognize the different and more memory. (right ?) Also does; anyone no what the name of that program is that you can use to see if your new memory is working?? I had it and don't no what happened to it. View 3 Replies View RelatedI can't change my homepage anymore it's stuck at this stupid video renting site and also i can't listen to any audio in web pages or any other program except windows media player and i've noticed when i'm on warcraft 3 i can't only hear background music and clicking sounds but no battling or speech audio that's really weird and i've set the proper volumes in the game already so i don't know what's going on also, i'm using symantec antivirus corporate edition and spyware doctor but they were both recently been unable to protect my computer in real time when b4 it was always ON and protecting my computer, now i can only scan computer with those programs (i have not changed the settings on these programs and it still says real time protection is enabled).
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am trying to cleanup a machine running Windows 2000 (not sure what release).I've run AntiVir, Spybot, Adaware, and CWShredder, but am still experiencig problems. For example, I can't change the default home URL from 'about:blank'. AntiVir found many archieves (probably more than 30) with 'infected file' that couldn't be deleted. Most of them appeared to be .dat files, but one was a .cab file (polmx2), which I suspect is part of the problem. I'm also guessing there may be hidden files becuase I couldn't 'find' them in Windows.

The reason I ask is that if a piece of software works on Windows 2000 server, is it extremely likely that it will work on Windows 2000 professional too? With the fire walls on each machine switched off I can see each of the machines from each other.I can share files on the laptop with the desktop, but when I try to access the desktop from the laptop I get the following message : xxxxxxx is not accessible. I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall.However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

This was fine except the username he has at work and the email address he has is pjsmith.now he would like to have his laptop signon as pjsmith rather than jsmith.I would like to simply create the user new (pjsmith), copy the old (jsmith) profile to the new (pjsmith) profile and then delete the old (jsmith). I have tested this on another machine and it doesn't work so well.
