Nov 8, 2009I have a 4600 dimension , not sure how this is. but when the system boots up it gives the dell logo screen f-2 & f-12 deal then it comes up please select the operating system to start, both options are microsoft windows XP Home Edition, how do I get this thing to skip this screen and just boot up? What would of been done to cause this? as there are 2 listings and if I arrow down to the second one to tell it to start from it , this comes up.Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem,Could not read from the selected boot disk. Jan 19, 2006I purhase this old Dell laptop from Ebay, and it has Win 2000 pro on it. It will boot to windows, however, I am try to install Win XP pro from cd rom drive. The laptop go to win, I am looking at cd rom and the light is blinking. I disable the hard dive and floopy, and the laptop said on boot device or operator system. I am in coms trying to bios, so I could boot from the cd rom. However, nothing is working, is their any way I could wipe this hard drive. I feel that their something that stoping the cd rom from boot the disk. Or someone made to boot from hard drive only.

Sep 27, 2007I'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
Cannot Burn Disc - Roxio Recognize Blank Disc

Jun 2, 2006I have a E Machine PC, model W2888. I formated the hard drive, but I do not have the recovery disc with the drivers on it. I was looking for the driver for the ethernet card. The card they show on the front of the case says "Intel Pro 10/100 LAN" so I was looking for drivers for that but no luck. So I called Emachines and they told me to download a chipset for "Intel 845GV" I tried looking for that, but I don't know what I'm looking for. Does anyone know where I can find a driver for the ethernet card so I can download it on this PC I'm using, burn it to a disc install it into my E Machine PC so I can get online and do a windows update and install all of the other dirvers?

Mar 3, 2006I have a Windows XP home SP2 computer that has a Sony DVD RW DW-D22A that supposedly supports both -R and +R. Well I bought a stack of 100 Blank DVD-R and less than 1/2 way through the stack they turned into lousy DVD's. Both for DVD movies and data storage they wouldn't work. I would get this CRC check sum error message. I contacted the manufacturer and sent in a few samples and they replaced them - sent me two stacks of 50 - nice company. Well I just burned a data disc and my computer doesn't recognize anything being on the disc - I even get the "You have inserted a blank cd/dvd window" thing on my screen. I then tried to burn a dvd movie using a different program and that program doesn't even recognize a disc being in the drive (yes I did put in a fresh dvd before I started the program).

Jul 19, 2005I get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.

I would like to replace the 2000 on the laptop with xp. I have the install (retail purchase) disc for the xp. It will be a fairly long process using the install disc due to the updates required. Can I download the XP and other desired programs from my main computer onto the laptop (it has all required updates etc.) If so, could someone outline the process involved. I have a files and settings transfer wizard on the main computer that should be of help in the process. I also have Nero that would allow me to burn a bootable disc if necessary.

Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. Jul 24, 2005I have had XP Home installed on a new Seagate hard drive for about 2 months. Suddenly, the computer did a restart and now it will not open Windows. It finds all my drives and then goes to a screen displaying "a disc read error has occured. Press control, alt, delete to restart." On restart, I receive the same message. I have tried checkdisc, fix boot and fix master boot record in the recovery console on my cd but nothing works. Is this a problem with the hard drive or Windows? Any suggestions would be helpful. I would hate to have to reinstall Windows.

At first I thought it was just the internet that was messed up, but it began to freeze even though I wasn't using the internet. Heres the problem, When installing it keeps getting hung up on 36, 16, or 9 mins. It will not pass that point. I have exhausted all of my options, I restart checked all the cables, drained the power by pulling the cord and holding the power button then plugging it back in. Then called dell and they walked me through wiping the HD clean, by starting up in DOS and walking me through the steps. Well did all that and started install again, and once again it got hung up on 23 mins
