I'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?

I have just bought a new PC so I could let the kids have the other one in their room. Both PC's are emachines and run XP. I have successfully networked the two with a crossover cable but I thought I'd reboot the old one to clear it from all the stuff I had on it. When I start the PC up with the recovery disk in either the D or E drive it doesn't get recognized and just goes strait to the user page. Any ideas on how I can get round this? I can enter the set up stage by pressing Del but i'm a bit green on this!

I already used cd-bootable Knoppix to copy all documents i needed to rescue. At this point a complete Re-install would be great, but alas, no install disk came with this notebook, And i lost the recovery discs i made. I do NOT have any XP disc available. How can I begin a re-install or similiar from the Hardisk with no Discs?

I get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.

I have tried to install a new xp pro sp3 disc on a new computer but have been getting errors in the installation. I have tried 3 different times but it says that the disc is missing some components and when it is final it does not work properly.
I finally talked to a tech person that asked me if I had another disc and I have an older sp2 disc. He said to install that but when I put in the key for my new disc it does not work with my older disc. I finally put in my old key and it worked fine. THe installation went off without a hitch but I won't be able to use my old key when I activate it. When I install the sp3 download will I be able to change my key to the new disc key?

In My Computer the DVD Drive (D) is shown but continually asks for the Disc to be inserted, even though there is a disc in the drive. I have removed and reinstalled the drive and downloaded "Interactual" software. The activity light remains on and static and the cursor changes to a disc on insertion.

I have a E Machine PC, model W2888. I formated the hard drive, but I do not have the recovery disc with the drivers on it. I was looking for the driver for the ethernet card. The card they show on the front of the case says "Intel Pro 10/100 LAN" so I was looking for drivers for that but no luck. So I called Emachines and they told me to download a chipset for "Intel 845GV" I tried looking for that, but I don't know what I'm looking for. Does anyone know where I can find a driver for the ethernet card so I can download it on this PC I'm using, burn it to a disc install it into my E Machine PC so I can get online and do a windows update and install all of the other dirvers?

I have a Windows XP home SP2 computer that has a Sony DVD RW DW-D22A that supposedly supports both -R and +R. Well I bought a stack of 100 Blank DVD-R and less than 1/2 way through the stack they turned into lousy DVD's. Both for DVD movies and data storage they wouldn't work. I would get this CRC check sum error message. I contacted the manufacturer and sent in a few samples and they replaced them - sent me two stacks of 50 - nice company. Well I just burned a data disc and my computer doesn't recognize anything being on the disc - I even get the "You have inserted a blank cd/dvd window" thing on my screen. I then tried to burn a dvd movie using a different program and that program doesn't even recognize a disc being in the drive (yes I did put in a fresh dvd before I started the program).

I have had XP Home installed on a new Seagate hard drive for about 2 months. Suddenly, the computer did a restart and now it will not open Windows. It finds all my drives and then goes to a screen displaying "a disc read error has occured. Press control, alt, delete to restart." On restart, I receive the same message. I have tried checkdisc, fix boot and fix master boot record in the recovery console on my cd but nothing works. Is this a problem with the hard drive or Windows? Any suggestions would be helpful. I would hate to have to reinstall Windows.

i was told that one could create a 'slipstream' disc on which xp pro, sp2, and updates after are installed during installation. True? If so how? I reinstall my OS each year and it would be a blessing to install all at one time.

I was trying to run a computer game off a CD and I got the error "There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive E:." The E drive is my CD RW. I had run this program before without a problem. I took the disk out and put it back in- no luck. I gave up.Now I try to run a program that has been installed on my harddrive (Powerpoint), and I get the same error. I never needed to have a disk in the E drive to use that program before. I use Windows XP. Not sure where to look to troubleshoot this one.

i bought a used hp pavilion running windows xp home. it was not wiped so i wanted to clean install. it came with a disc but after doing some research i found out that the product key for the disc did not match the one on the side of the case. then after using 2 key extractors discovered that the key inside the machine was different from both the cd and the lable on machine. so here is one question, if i use the cd that i got with it and it has been used to pirate with, can it come back on me? or what would be the easiest and legal way to reinstall without having to buy a new disc? can i somehow access the install files in the computer?

I have an aging but nevertheless still potent Dell desktop. It came with ME, but spent most of it's life running 2KPro. But I wanted XP, and I wanted SP2 (you know, all the good stuff). But I didn't wanna pay a lot of money for it.I once paid $184.00 for an XP disc at Costco. And M$ talks about piracy. This time, I Googled until I was satisfied that I had found the cheapest price $43.88.I knew that I was taking a chance, and might get scammed but I went ahead with it anyway. It came from DirectDepot2U via UPS yesterday. When I opened the package, there were 2 discs, and a rather brief instruction sheet: "Dear Customer: Please install windows with Back Up CD for all computers. The original CD (Dell, HP, Compaq or Gateway..) is your license CD and for all special drivers. Thanks. Customer Service" No COA, or any ot that fancy stuff.I was on my own. One CD was a genuine Dell XP home re installation CD, but I wasn't supposed to use that. The other CD (XP pro, as I would discover) was colored solid fire-engine red, with a crude inkstamp that read "Back Up CD" (without the quotes). There was a little sheet with the product key.It could have made the grade for Army surplus.I popped it into the tray, and off I went.It started nicely, and after everything was installed, prompted me for the product key. From there it seemed to take over with a mind of it's own. All I had to do was sit back and enjoy the show, occasionally checking for a choice. At one point, it asked if I was directly connected to a modem, or to a router. I clicked router. The next thing I knew, a Microsoft update was being installed.I was on the Internet!I know, I know, only have mouse, keyboard & monitor connected.
But you see, I was riding a horse without a saddle having a good time.I hadn't disconnected anything. I clicked on the IE button. Boom, there was MSN! I went to MS updates, as I wanted to install SP2. It said no updates were available. Curious, I opened "system". SP2 was already in there!I opened Device Manager. I wondered where all the yellow went. (I was prepared to deal with drivers, as I had previously gone on the Dell website, downloaded all my XP updated drivers, unzipped, and burned them to a CD.I just now threw that CD into the wastebasket.)To sum up, I've never had an installation go so smoothly. Now, maybe I'm heading for a fall.Maybe this disc is illegitimate. But hey, what have I got to lose? $43.88 (plus shipping).
