Can't Install On My Hard Drive - Cd Doesn't Works
Oct 14, 2005My home computer just crashe I got a blue screen, and i have lost my Recovery CD, so i tooke the Hard drive to my Office and installed on another PC as SLAVE (running windows XP) I backed up all my Data and then I formated the Hard Drive as NTFS, but now that i installed back the hard drive to my computer, i can't install the windows xp, I have de WIn XP CD, and I chosed to boot from the CD-ROM here the CD is but it doesn't work... what can I do...? How can I boot the PC to install windows XP?

Feb 10, 2010Ctrl now opens the bookmarks side-bar in firefox when I try to ctrl + c to copy something it does in fact copy but it opens the bookmarks sidebar every time. Also I cannot ctrl alt delete to open taskmanager anymore.

Nov 14, 2008I am attempting to delete some software off of my computer. None of the 3 that have been downloaded for a long time and show up on the bottom of the screen (Net Defensewall, System Suite 8, and Windows Defender) but yet they don't exist when I try to delete them? What am I missing? I have never seen this happen before.
The computer is not in safe mode, as I checked that already. As a matter of fact, my software box only shows like 5 different softwares when it should show about 12

Sep 27, 2010i have a folder on my desktop that is not empty but when i try to open it (via GUI or command line) it will not. i get "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" and it wants me to run check disk. when i do, i then get an application error on boot up. so i boot in safe mode with command line and disable check disk on boot up so i can get back into windows with no problem however the folder is still there and unable to open and/or delete. fsutil tells me that the c drive is dirty, but i just can't clean it.how can i delete "C:Documents and SettingsusernameDesktopNew Folder"?

Jan 10, 2005a virus on their machine ,I don't know which or what, then tried to get rid of it by reloading windows. Because I teach office applications such as word, excel etc, they think I can fix it for them straight away. I have a little knowledge, they have none so to speak. Someone has pointed me to your site and so I thought I would give you guys a shot. What is happening. - The computer hard drive has got very little on it - but it is running very very slow. I know this is processor memory not storage memory that governs the speed, but I thought you needed to know that bit of info. The email doesn't appear to be working - it says the IMAP setting is wrong but I have checked the email account properties and they all look ok to me. It will log onto the internet - eventually - but is exceptionally slow and will not open any pages - although the browser window opens it keeps saying 'page cannot be displayed'. I have run adaware - but there wasn't much on it - although it did say that it could not delete 'deskadserve'.....

Computer Only Works For 1 Second Every 20 Seconds
Mar 9, 2007My Inspiron 8100 laptop had a hard drive failure - click of death. After replacing the HD (installed with XP and one I know works) the system boots up but very slowly. I should say that it did the same thing before replacing the HD when I was trying to run a disc recovery CD.It's slow right from the BIOS POST - which took about 15mins, and right on throught the WIN XP startup. Took 1hr to get to login and over 2 hours to load system programs.It seems to freeze for 20secs then work for a brief moment. EG I have to hold down a key for 20secs, then 1 character will appear. This brief period of activity coincides with a flicker of the HD activity LED. This was the same pattern even when I checked the BIOS setup on first booting up - so I don't think this is a Windows issue.Running a dignostic is going to be difficult as it would take days to install and run at this rate.

Mar 16, 2010The other day I was sitting there playing world of war-craft like any other day, when my personal computer just freezes and nothing works, so I do a hard boot.I was using windows vista at this stage and every time the loading bar would come up, it would go away like windows was about to load and then it would just sit on a endless black screen. After going into safe mode and doing a system restore I was able to get in to windows once before it froze up on another game, I spent 2 days trying to get into windows before reformatting to windows xp.So, after reformatting and putting windows xp on, everything seemed fine, did my windows updates and all the updates for my mobo etc, had the personal computer running for about 6 hours with no problems, go to play world of war-craft and within 5 mins my personal computer froze again. So back to the same problem, except this time the bar loads and i get a blue screen that comes up sometimes, but its only up for about 1 second before windows restarts again. It just keeps going to the windows loading bar, will freeze for 2-3 seconds, continue to load and then restart again by itself. I left it on for about an hour of cycling through by itself but windows still wont load.World of war-craft is on a 2nd HD that hasn't been reformatted, I thought this might be the cause but my personal computer also froze when I was just browsing the net and had the same problem loading windows.Any suggestions? because I'm a bit lost at the moment with what to do, the only other thing I can think of to be the cause would be my ram or gfx card dying? but I hope that's not the case.

Dec 6, 2007I recently got a few notifications of viruses on my computer. Along with it came a lot of adware pop-ups. I downloaded Kaspersky AV 7.0 from their site and am using it as a trial version. I had an older version of McAfee, but hadn't renewed and do not have up-to-date virus definitions. As the title reads, my computer will only work when I boot windows in safe mode with networking. When I try to boot it up regularly, it goes very slow at the log-in screen and then once I log in, there's only a black screen with the mouse pointer. I left it at that window for a few hours hoping it would eventually load. Not the case. Same thing happens when I boot in safe mode with the exception that ctrl+alt+del works and will bring up the Windows Task Manager and then I can run/terminate programs from there. But no start toolbar or icons or anything else. I have done several full scans and they come up with viruses every time.

Feb 5, 2003when i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.

Mar 14, 2006I'm wondering if it's safe to do that. I would guess that individual documents wouldn't be infected. I wouldn't want to infect my new computer. Afterwards, I plan to reformat the drive and re-install the operating system. The infected machine is an older one, so I may use it for simple word processing or older games or give it away. I know that reformating won't destroy old files beyond recovery but I'd hope it would take care of any viruses. I don't have any personal economic info on it since I haven't used a program like Quicken or Money.
I know the machine has at least one virus (about.com) and may have others since many of the programs that should take care of this stopped working after I installed Windows Service Pack 2. I gather others had similar problems after doing the same. Perhaps the most annoying is that I can't access the icons on the bottom of the screen. That includes files you minimize.

May 31, 2010Yesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.
The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well.So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.

Jan 12, 2008I just got a laptop that is now running 2000 professional (intel pent. 2). My main computer has XP home (intel pent.3) They are both Compaq's. I would like to replace the 2000 on the laptop with xp. I have the install (retail purchase) disc for the xp. It will be a fairly long process using the install disc due to the updates required. Can I download the XP and other desired programs from my main computer onto the laptop (it has all required updates etc.) If so, could someone outline the process involved. I have a files and settings transfer wizard on the main computer that should be of help in the process. I also have Nero that would allow me to burn a bootable disc if necessary.

Today my wife used it for Market Day and LTD then went offline and put it to sleep.When I woke it up, the 1st thing I noticed was that the desktop Tetris icon was black. The shape was there but it was black. I tried to change the icon in the shortcut properties and saw the correct icon there but it kept turning black when I applied it. Then I went to My Computer. Jan 30, 2006I had a ton of problems with my computer (corrupted files, registry, etc) until I found out that the hard drive was the responsible. (70ish bad sectors) I bought one last week. The computer ran fine. Last night I got some errror about a DLL being corrupt (I think it was sxs.dll) and I had to run CHKDSK. After a while I turned the system off. Today I turn it on, CHKDSK runs automatically, then the system fails at starting up: the mouse arrow appears, but nothing more.It can't be the hard drive, as it's new. Bad RAM maybe? Could it be some software? P2P, games, virus, anything? Is there a way to fix it? I'm not gonna format, there's too much data at stake. I'm using XP SP1, with AVG.

Feb 15, 2005my dvd/cdrw drive just recently disapeared from the "my computer" window, and it does not work any more. It has power going to it. I checked all cables plenty of times. The only time it works is when i put XP cd and restart computer, it reads it. But otherwise it wont read anything when i am on Xp. i dont watn to reformatt agian lol
