my dvd/cdrw drive just recently disapeared from the "my computer" window, and it does not work any more. It has power going to it. I checked all cables plenty of times. The only time it works is when i put XP cd and restart computer, it reads it. But otherwise it wont read anything when i am on Xp. i dont watn to reformatt agian lol
I have two hard drives each divided into two partitions.I performed a clean install and repartitioned the C drive into C: and D:"My Computer" shows the C & D partitions correctly but does not show the second drive with it's partitions D: and E:In "Disk Management" of "Computer Management", my secondary drive is shown as Disk 0 and not being partitioned with all the GB combined.
My problem is that in my computer with windows xp I used to always use the thumbnail view in the windows explorer to know which videos where which and also for images. But then my computer got all screwed up and I had to reformat it and install the windows xp again and downloaded all the new service packs and stuff. But now, I go to either the windows explorer or my computer and for images I can see the thumbnails but for videos it only shows either the windows media or realplayer logo but no thumbnail image of the video. It is driving me crazy because I really need to be able to see the thumbnails in order to identity them fast instead of having to open all of them!
First I am new to XP but not new to computers.I got a new-ish thinkpad with two partitions on it's drive. The c: primary one was NTFS, there was another for SERVICE which was FAT32. I promptly proceeded to using PartitionMagic to break up my huge c: partition into 3 partitions (all primary - now I have 4 primary partitions, 4th being the SERVICE fat32 one), the first 3 being NTFS.
My win XP pro doesn't recognize my USB 400GB WD external HD.The PC detected it the first time however on subsequent connection, it only detect it as mass storage device. Window explorer doesn't show it as external device.I uninstall the USB mass storage driver from device manager several times but window doesn't display the HD in window explorer.
Normally when I turn on my computer, it loads and logs in automatically and doesn't need to show the login screen. But today when I turn it on, it goes to the login screen. So I click my name which is Compaq_Owner, and it logs me in. I see a quick flash of my background of my desktop with no icons, and then it goes back to the login screen and logs me out. It says "Saving Personal Settings" and "Logging Out" . Then I am back at the log in screen. I do not get any errors, just this. I have tried Safe Mode and making a different account I can log into, but it doesn't work. I did a system restore to Monday, 2 days before it started this. I then log in and it does the same thing all over again. I have also restarted and tried to log in, but that doesn't work either.
I am attempting to delete some software off of my computer. None of the 3 that have been downloaded for a long time and show up on the bottom of the screen (Net Defensewall, System Suite 8, and Windows Defender) but yet they don't exist when I try to delete them? What am I missing? I have never seen this happen before. The computer is not in safe mode, as I checked that already. As a matter of fact, my software box only shows like 5 different softwares when it should show about 12
i'm trying to delete a file in dos that shows up when i do dir but when i try to delete it, it says it can't be found. it is a virus that i'm trying to get rid off. it's in the windows logon shell in winntsystem32 folder.
I am having trouble setting up XP on my Windows 2000 SP4 Computer.I know I installed the components into the computer, but it does'nt show up.I have no experience In boot disks or anything else, so please speak slowly.
I know this is probably a very simple fix but I can't seem to remember it. When I open windows explorer (xp home) to view files and folders it is not showing me all of them. For example, under c:documents and settings it does not show "local settings..." and all the subfolders. And, when I installed Office it created an install cache folder but it doesn't show that either. How do I turn it on to show all? There is no prompt to "show hidden files". its probably something real simple that I am overlooking.
I have recently been working on a VB6 Program which was meant to change the registry. After i had tested it, my laptop rebooted suddenly and i got an error saying: The following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM This is a real pain because i got my laptop off eBay and after a small child hammered the keyboard, the CD Drive Became Bust. I only have a 3.5Inch floppy drive and 10 floppy disks. It is quite old and it doesn't support USB booting When i try using a MS-DOS startup disk, it doesn't show my C: Drive
I've noticed that the dot-url part of the file name does not show in Windows Explorer for web link files/shortcuts even though I have Explorer set to show the entire name, including extensions. Why is this exception made in Windows Explorer to only this one extension?
I just tried to do a system restore using the built in windows tool. However, everytime I go to the screen, the area where the little calender that has all your restore points, is gone and blank. I have tried restarting; nothing. I have tried making a new restore point and it doesn't show up. Refer to the screen shot I took to describe what I mean.
Okay, so there are many topics out there from people asking for help because they deleted their show desktop icon.I however never deleted it, it just stop working. After some investigating it was revealed that my C:WINDOWSsystemshow desktop file is gone. The icon is there but the file is gone.
i installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my C Drive. and then installed Xp SP2 on my D Drive, in that sequence. now when the window boots it doesn't show the booting options and directly boots into XP SP2. i can not boot into Vista now. is there anyway i can make OS choice menu available / boot into Vista.
I have Winodws XP on a Compaq nc6120. I opened my laptop today to get it working and clicked on Google Chrome's shortcut, and nothing happened. The hourglass cursor came up and it stayed that way for about a half hour, then I tried to turn it off and back on the same thing keeps happening. I have also tried other programs. The task manager doesn't show up and the start bar does not even respond. I ran an HDD self-test and it said that all tests were successful. I use Avast Anti-Virus Free, and tried to download Comodo, but something went wrong, this was the day before theses issues started happening. I'm not very intelligent when it comes to 'under-the-hood' problems with computers, so I have no idea what could be happening.
I am having an issue with my DVD Burner. It used to work fine, I was able to burn DVDs (Using Roxio). I fixed an issue related to AVI files by installing a program called K-Lite Codec Pack. During the installation, I was asked to approve some erroneous registry entries that existed. Since then, I have had issues with the DVD Burner (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4081B). The drive doesn't show up in as a valid letter on my list of drives. When I go to the device manager, it has a yellow ! next to it (Code 37)....
What I have tried so far:Un-uinstalled and re-installed the device driver Followed instructions on Microsoft.com to Manual steps to delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values that can cause CD access problems (http://support.microsoft.com/default...en-us%3B314060) At that point, I could see the drive and the exclamation mark in the device manager was gone, however, I could not burn any DVDs... it didn't recognize it as a burner....
I have the following problem: Explorer doesn`t show any details for any media file type like artist or album, when choosing Details view. Additionally, clicking on file properties doesn`t show any info either, nor simple, nor in advanced view. The files are fine, and other software reads the media file info correctly, including WMP 11 and Winamp.
I obviously have a network connection, because I'm sending and receiving Usenet messages and can browse the Web. The problem is that Network Connections in Control Panel is blank, empty, it doesn't show anything at all. The other problem is that the Network Setup Wizard won't run.Any ideas on what the problem is (aside from user incompetence).
I discovered that my main computer had acquired the 'Pure Networks Platform' mess, possibly from when I installed a Linksys WRT 160n wireless router. The actual software doesn't seem to be on the setup cd, but I haven't downloaded it either. Have figured out that its give me slowdowns and wierdnesses and generally making me mad. Especially when I find that it does not show in Add Remove! Tried searching for Pure Networks remover, and other variations in wording. Find that lots of people have similar difficulties. What is the trick? Safe mode and delete the folders? Search the registry manually?
If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.
I had a ton of problems with my computer (corrupted files, registry, etc) until I found out that the hard drive was the responsible. (70ish bad sectors) I bought one last week. The computer ran fine. Last night I got some errror about a DLL being corrupt (I think it was sxs.dll) and I had to run CHKDSK. After a while I turned the system off. Today I turn it on, CHKDSK runs automatically, then the system fails at starting up: the mouse arrow appears, but nothing more.It can't be the hard drive, as it's new. Bad RAM maybe? Could it be some software? P2P, games, virus, anything? Is there a way to fix it? I'm not gonna format, there's too much data at stake. I'm using XP SP1, with AVG.
I've been trying to fix this problem for 2+ days. Okay, so, I just got a new cd-rom and i installed it into my computer and hooked everything up one as a primary master and the other as a primary slave.those two cd-roms show up in BIOS and they show up in Device Manager.I need help. I've tried switing them to secondary, switching them back and forth with master/slave.I tried switching out my cables.I do have everything connect cause they open and close and show up like i said before in BIOS and Device Manage.I really need some help cause i'm really lost with ideas.
I have a problem. Suddenly and for no apparent reason, my DVD burner (D drive) and CD burner (E drive) do not show up in my computer any more. I looked in device manager and they both show up but have yellow triangles with black exclamation points next to them. The message for them is something to the effect of the drivers are installed but it cannot locate the hardware. I have not tampered with them. The only thing I did was attempt to install Simple Backup and there was an error so it rolled back and uninstalled itself. After that was when I noticed the drives don't show up anymore. I have XP home on a compaq presario computer. DVD burner is HP dvd writer 300i and CD burner is a LiteOn something or other.
im having a problem when i click on my computer icon, the contents in my computer cant show out. when i double click on my computer, the windows screen disappear and come back to windows again. i have been restore again the windows xp pro,(recently im using win xp pro), after i restored the windows, the problems still the same, its there any way to save the os without format the pc
My Computer just shows flashlight. I have made it worse by trying to fix it. Control panel has stopped working also. I had added MSN Toolbar and may have crashed it. I need to find a way to fix this without losing data. Can not backup because it won't find other drives. Computer is working.
My operating system, Windows XP, comes up with several error messages when I try to open up system files or programs that concern the "Computer Administrator". I then checked in the Control Panel to make sure that my name is in fact the admininstrator, and it is, to no suprise. But whenever I try to open these programs it either says this has been disabled by the administrator. The administrator has turned off this feature.
I don't know why this happens. I find out a way to fix it and then when I close it, it won't let me reopen it without fixing it again. Some programs that I have tried that don't work and give me this or a similar error message are, System Restore, Task Manager, Regedit, and Windows Update.
At random occasions, my mouse will get all jumpy on me. Another way to describe it would be laggy - the pointer is laggy. I can drag the pointer across the desktop and it'll get 'stuck' a few times. Sometimes it even gets stuck for 10-30 seconds. Sometimes although very, very rarely it gets stuck and won't move until I reboot. Logging out of Windows and changing users or something like that doesn't help. I have to shutdown or reboot.
And sometimes the computer will beep when the mouse is getting stuck. The beep isn't coming from my speakers, but from the motherboard (?). The mouse is clean, I'm sure of that. It has also been taken care of, so I don't understand why it would start failing on me. And the other bizarre thing is that.. sometimes the mouse will work okay for two straight days, but then it'll start to screw up, and stay a little jumpy even after a reboot, such as right now.
i have a laptop (windows xp) and when i close the lid it goes into stand by automatically, and successfully, but then starts back up within 2-10 seconds for no reason.same case with hibernation, as soon as the computer is in hibernation it starts up again. i went to windows website but it suggests this has to do 3d screen savers which i dont use. this seems like a common problem and supposedly has to do with winfixer, sysprotect or winantivirus spyware. my computer had had vundo trojan.
