Computer Doesn't Stand By Or Hibernate
Apr 27, 2007
i have a laptop (windows xp) and when i close the lid it goes into stand by automatically, and successfully, but then starts back up within 2-10 seconds for no reason.same case with hibernation, as soon as the computer is in hibernation it starts up again. i went to windows website but it suggests this has to do 3d screen savers which i dont use. this seems like a common problem and supposedly has to do with winfixer, sysprotect or winantivirus spyware. my computer had had vundo trojan.

when I click on the Stand By button my computer well hibernate. I have been using Stand By for 3 years now. The button actually says Stand By, It says it is going into stand by mode. But it goes into Hibernate mode. Before when I put it in Stand By mode, the fans would all turn off. Now the fan doesnt turn off at all. From what I understand is that Hibernate mode saves your current settings. I have click the Stand By button a number of times with my web browser open and after I wake up from stand by (or what it is says is stand by) my web browser is still on the screen.

After reformatting the HD and reinstalling XP, I find that my Inspiron laptop doesn't have Stand By or Hibernate options. When I close the lid and re-open it it's nonresponsive on a black screen until I turn it off with the Power button. I thought HAL.DLL was missing -- I got that error message once -- but it's there in SYSTEM32 and the bootlog shows it installed as a driver. Is there another driver missing? (I can't decipher all those short file names.) Might it be the wrong HAL, a generic one supplied with the XP Re-Install CD? How do I find out?

A Toshiba laptop, running XP Home, for about three months has been intermittently failing to wake up after stand by. At the time the failure occurs, I find the following two errors logged to Computer Management | System Tools | Event Viewer | System:
Source IPNATHLP Event 30005 User N/A
Source IPNATHLP Event 30009 User N/A
Does anyone have a clue on where to look for the source of this error?

After I go on Stand By, and I go back on my computer straight away, I find there is no problems and it works normally.Although if I leave it for a long time on Stand By then go back to it, it starts up but runs VERY slow, can't do anything at all, therefore I have to restart the computer, at which point it works normally again. How can I fix this problem? Let me know if you need any other info. (I put the information that I thought was relevant)

I have a Gateway computer with Windows XP. I believe my computer keeps going into stand by mode. The power button is orange instead of green. When this happens I am not able to turn my computer back on. I have to unplug everything. When I plug it back in, the light is usually still orange but I just keep hitting the on and off button until it finally turns green and the computer will start up. I will now shut my computer down at night but when I get up in the morning the light on the computer is orange again.

I'm sure this is an old issue for some but it's new to me because I downloaded Service Pact 2 this weekend. I'm now noticing that sometimes when my computer comes out of stand by the local area connection symbol is disabled and I can't get it to enable. I've even gone into My Computer/ Network Connections/ Local Area Connection Properties window and tried to enable it but that won't work. I also tried to troubleshoot it, but that hung up, not even ctrl alt delete would shut it down so I pulled the plug. Can anyone tell me what's going on? I don't think it's a coincidence that it started after I got SP 2. I'm tempted to try and unistall it, but I've already seen some posts on the forum about possible negative consequences.

Recently I installed a Linksys WMP54G wireless network adapter on my desktop (HP Pavilion a556x with Windows XP Home installed). My computer will not hibernate on its own. Settings in power options are correct (I think) and the hibernation is turned on. I looked in the properties settings on the wireless adapter and there is no power management tab.

After a huge upgrade and fresh XP installation (up to SP2), my computer won't standby hibernate. The only parts that remained were the HDs, RAID card, and power supply. MOBO was upgraded to X38, GPU to GF8800GT, and CPU is now Dual Core. Prior to the upgrade, my PC could go into standby. Now it is "grayed out."I went to power management, hibernation tab is not there. I tried reinstalling MOBO drivers, same thing. My comp used to be able to do this in XP. Well, I read about it, and supposedly, dual core cannot go into standby (or at least winxp doesn't want to allow the user to do this with DualC). Is that true? Edit: I even tried the hotfix and disabling terminal services. No effect.I tried apmstat -v, and it said that this is an ACPI machine and that APM is not relevant.

computer running XP is turning itself on at 1:00PM after being placed in hibernate. The scheduler had items for this time (which I am now changing). Isn't the computer completely OFF when hibernated? What mechanism does it have for turning itself on if the CPU supposedly is powered down?

I know that this question has been asked but I could not find an answer that fixed the problem, so I thought I might try again. Whenever I try to hibernate my computer, the message, "Insufficient system resources to complete the API." comes up. Afterwards, anything concerning hibernation disappear and the hibernation button cannot be clicked. My system details are as follows: Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP Media Center Edition. 1.73 ghz processor with 1.50 gb of ram. (I have heard that having over 1.0 gb of ram might cause this, but I could not find anything that could fix it.)

I had a ton of problems with my computer (corrupted files, registry, etc) until I found out that the hard drive was the responsible. (70ish bad sectors) I bought one last week. The computer ran fine. Last night I got some errror about a DLL being corrupt (I think it was sxs.dll) and I had to run CHKDSK. After a while I turned the system off. Today I turn it on, CHKDSK runs automatically, then the system fails at starting up: the mouse arrow appears, but nothing more.It can't be the hard drive, as it's new. Bad RAM maybe? Could it be some software? P2P, games, virus, anything? Is there a way to fix it? I'm not gonna format, there's too much data at stake. I'm using XP SP1, with AVG.

My operating system, Windows XP, comes up with several error messages when I try to open up system files or programs that concern the "Computer Administrator". I then checked in the Control Panel to make sure that my name is in fact the admininstrator, and it is, to no suprise. But whenever I try to open these programs it either says this has been disabled by the administrator. The administrator has turned off this feature.
I don't know why this happens. I find out a way to fix it and then when I close it, it won't let me reopen it without fixing it again. Some programs that I have tried that don't work and give me this or a similar error message are, System Restore, Task Manager, Regedit, and Windows Update.

At random occasions, my mouse will get all jumpy on me. Another way to describe it would be laggy - the pointer is laggy. I can drag the pointer across the desktop and it'll get 'stuck' a few times. Sometimes it even gets stuck for 10-30 seconds. Sometimes although very, very rarely it gets stuck and won't move until I reboot. Logging out of Windows and changing users or something like that doesn't help. I have to shutdown or reboot.
And sometimes the computer will beep when the mouse is getting stuck. The beep isn't coming from my speakers, but from the motherboard (?). The mouse is clean, I'm sure of that. It has also been taken care of, so I don't understand why it would start failing on me. And the other bizarre thing is that.. sometimes the mouse will work okay for two straight days, but then it'll start to screw up, and stay a little jumpy even after a reboot, such as right now.
