I have windows XP on my laptop and it just refuses to enter in a standby mode, neither Hibernate mode.Usually it runs very normally but every time I try to put it on standby I get a blue error screen that says that my system have to shut down because of a serious error and that I have to check the bios. After that I just switch off the button and have to turn it off!

That made me nervous, so yesterday I made True Image images of both partitions on the HD, that is C: (OS and apps) and D: (data).3. This morning I decided to run a memory diagnostic disk (I had memtest86+ and Windows Diagnostics CDs on hand). I set boot priority to CD/DVD ROM using Start > All Programs > Toshiba > Utilities > Toshiba Assist > Optimize > Toshiba Hardware Settings

even after deliberately crashing the computer (pulled the power cord while

For some reason my computer won't enter standby mode on its own. Most of the time it won't start a screen saver either. I have it programmed to start the screen saver after 3 minutes and to enter standby mode after 15 minutes. However, I'll come back an hour later only to find that the battery has been completely drained. Anyone know why my computer won't enter standby mode or start its screen saver?

I've tried all the options when the 'windows failed to load properly' comes up, but they all hang. When I tried it in safe mode a list of drivers appears to be loading but then it gets to /mup.sys and it hangs there.Recent changes to system: Yes and one is undoubtedly the culprit, as this install of windows has been running flawlessly for over 2 years. Today I made two changes to the system....and in all my wisdom I made them both at the same time, although I'm pretty sure I know what screwed it up. I flashed the BIOS to the latest revision, upgraded the processor to a Athlon socket 939 x2 +4200 (from a single core +3200 I think) AND installed a small external SATA port (I think this screwed stuff up).The BIOS upgrade went smoothly and took place a few hours and reboots before the processor change in eSATA bracket install, so I don't think it's to blame.The processor install also went off without a hitch and the computer not only recognized it correctly, but the first boot was fine and went to windows. During this first boot I got the 'installing new hardware' little picture in the lower right hand part of the taskbar, but was never prompted for drivers.

It was working yesterday...Can anyone tell me how to check my Sound Playback device and playback programs? View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter resolving an issue resulting from a printer installation, I was able to get my computer back to a state of normalcy, except that the CD drives were no longer found by the system.This is a Win 2K and there is a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW.So rather than do the smart thing and reinstall them via the OEM CDs, I went into the Bios and tried to tell the Bios that they were the Secondary Master and Slave drives (duh).So now, the system hangs, telling me that the primary slave auto detect wasn't finding anything. (Even though I didn't address that when I screwed with it.)I cannot even enter the BIOS setup, since the hangup occurs before the system even gets to that point.If I can get back to BIOS setup, I can at least reset to defaults, then figure out how to do the right thing, but for now, I'm STUCK.It's an MSI KT3 Ultra Mother board If more info is needed I can probably get it, but wanted to keep the initial post short.

I originally was going to use some software I found in the forums that requires me to boot from a floppy or a cd. I checked the BIOS and have it booting from the hard disk last and yet I cannot boot from either the cd or the floppy.At this point I am willing to Fdisk the whole thing and start fresh. It shouldn't really matter since he has never been on the machine before and can't have any data that he would care about.
i am working on a friends computer .she installed a program and all was ok after that . she turned off the computer and went on holiday for a week . came back started the computer and received an error message
"Windows cannot start " if windows doesnt start normally . windows will restart " a mesage similiar tothis ..and she receives the same message everytime .. ( she isnt available ATM for me to get hte exact error msg ) i have tried to get into safe mode to remove this program . but safe mode isnt available . i have tried F5 on start up . and safe mode isnt in the options ..& the same with F8 no option to enter windows in safe mode . what would anyone suggest to try next ?

I have added all the Window updates including sp3. I have a GE Force 6200 video card and have installed all the drivers but the machine will not enter sleep mode either manually or automatically (I mention this because I have read elsewhere this was a problem for Vista but haven't seen anything anywhere for XP). I even set the bios to force sleep mode and nothing happened.

When I close the laptop, it just hangs on the "entering standby mode" screen and drains the battery. When I open it up again, it shows that screen, and I have to press the power button to turn it off completely and start all over. When I try to put it in standby mode manually (by selecting it in the "turn off computer" options, the same thing happens. It seemingly started out of the blue and Every time I close it now, I have to completely shut it down, which is a pain.
