For some reason my computer won't enter standby mode on its own. Most of the time it won't start a screen saver either. I have it programmed to start the screen saver after 3 minutes and to enter standby mode after 15 minutes. However, I'll come back an hour later only to find that the battery has been completely drained. Anyone know why my computer won't enter standby mode or start its screen saver?
View 14 RepliesMy laptop (the same one I've had for over two years) suddenly won't enter standby mode at all. When I close the laptop, it just hangs on the "entering standby mode" screen and drains the battery. When I open it up again, it shows that screen, and I have to press the power button to turn it off completely and start all over. When I try to put it in standby mode manually (by selecting it in the "turn off computer" options, the same thing happens. It seemingly started out of the blue and Every time I close it now, I have to completely shut it down, which is a pain.

I just bought this computer, and after only 3 months later, my compter started to make weird buzzing noises when its in the screensaver mode. Its no doubt a virus but norton cant detect it... I never knew viruses can affect sounds on a pc.

"Windows cannot start " if windows doesnt start normally . windows will restart " a mesage similiar tothis ..and she receives the same message everytime .. ( she isnt available ATM for me to get hte exact error msg ) i have tried to get into safe mode to remove this program . but safe mode isnt available . i have tried F5 on start up . and safe mode isnt in the options ..& the same with F8 no option to enter windows in safe mode . what would anyone suggest to try next ?
I've tried several times to start in safe mode on XP. All of the guides I've referenced say F8 is the key. However, when I boot, the only functions I see on the screen that only lingers for a moment are F10 and esc.I've tried the tapping method also. Nothing.I'm talking about an hp notebook

I ended up doing a hard restart. The PC then took a longer than normal time to boot back up.2. That made me nervous, so yesterday I made True Image images of both partitions on the HD, that is C: (OS and apps) and D: (data).3. This morning I decided to run a memory diagnostic disk (I had memtest86+ and Windows Diagnostics CDs on hand). I set boot priority to CD/DVD ROM using Start > All Programs > Toshiba > Utilities > Toshiba Assist > Optimize > Toshiba Hardware Settings

But then after a few seconds of it going into the mode, the computer will start back up. I am running windows XP home. The computer model is a MDG computer running a intel motherboard and processor. I have checked and played with the bios setting and it does not help.

I am having a start problem with I guess the power usage, It sometimes come on, then shuts off after 3 or 4 seconds. Sometimes only once, but sometimes more than once. Cannot afford right now to get it fixed or to buy something, so maybe if I can keep it in standby it would not use the initial startup surge of power. Also, I though my mouse would take the system out of standby but it don't. I have to use the power button on the computer, (even though the mouse information says to use this device to take the computer out of standby, it is checked. Are there other areas that I should check to see if something is marked wrong for using the mouse to take the system out of standby? I have an optical mouse incase its needed to know.

System standby: Never

I have WINXP, Service pack 3. On SHUTDOWN I press STANDBY, computer shuts down, same for HIBERNATE. I checked the settings in POWER OPTIONS. No new programs installed recently.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an older somputer I use to Host Games online...seemed fine last few nite .however the last 2 oe 3 times I have started it...it takes forever to start and a screen appears saying sorry for any inconveinince but windows could not start..etc etc..gives options to start in Normal mode safe mode or last known good configuration..wich is what I tried after turning it off and back on again..still nothing..I can get it to start in safe mode....but it wont boot up in normal mode..just hangs at "Windows XP" screen...Its an older Pentium4 Dell Dimension4300.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a home built machine running XP Pro. It is a clean installation since had some recent other problems with it and completely formatted hard drive and reinstalled XP. I have added all the Window updates including sp3. I have a GE Force 6200 video card and have installed all the drivers but the machine will not enter sleep mode either manually or automatically (I mention this because I have read elsewhere this was a problem for Vista but haven't seen anything anywhere for XP). I even set the bios to force sleep mode and nothing happened.

I have a standard PS/2 keyboard and mouse which do not work as I try to enter Safe mode. As I am on Windows 2000 Pro, I need to log on as administrator. I am not password protected, but have no way of clicking the Log in button.There are no settings for Keyboard or Mouse in my BIOS setup
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter loading a couple of programs (TurboCad and Adobe Photodeluxe), when I c,ose the lid to my Dell 1501 Inspiron laptop I get a warning sound and the following message on the screen, "The device driver for the 'Standard 101/102-key or Microsft Natural PS/2 keyboard' device is preventing the machine from entering standby. Please close all applications and try again. If the problem persists, you may need to up date this driver.
The problem does , in fact, persisit. I had only one program application running and closing it had no effect. I went into Device manager and opened properties>driver tab for the keyboard. Clicked 'update driver' and was asked to insert the XP CD. no surprise it came beck with I have the latest driver installed. I created a restore point prior to installing the programs, but I'd like to avoid doing it over again. Anyone got any idea of a way to fix this without doing a restore?
