My Inspiron 8100 laptop had a hard drive failure - click of death. After replacing the HD (installed with XP and one I know works) the system boots up but very slowly. I should say that it did the same thing before replacing the HD when I was trying to run a disc recovery CD.It's slow right from the BIOS POST - which took about 15mins, and right on throught the WIN XP startup. Took 1hr to get to login and over 2 hours to load system programs. It seems to freeze for 20secs then work for a brief moment. EG I have to hold down a key for 20secs, then 1 character will appear. This brief period of activity coincides with a flicker of the HD activity LED. This was the same pattern even when I checked the BIOS setup on first booting up - so I don't think this is a Windows issue.Running a dignostic is going to be difficult as it would take days to install and run at this rate.
my computer keeps freezin every 10 seconds then stops then again every 10 seconds, and i dont know why i checked task manager and was able to find out every 10 seconds this new thing shows up called mshchy.com and it dissapears right after the freezing is done which last for like less then a second.i tried scanning and deleting the spyware but still it keeps coming.i am using Windows Xp Professional, and also this is a pretty old PC.
my problem is that my system keeps spiking to 57% then back down again for a split second every 2 seconds. This causes my system to suddenly pause then unpause again, very frustrating. Everything is affected- video, sound, mouse cursor. At around the same time my system begins spiking, my internet connection goes down(talk about a bad day).so when i restarted my computer the internet connection starts "Aquiring network address" then it gives up but the funny thing is the other two computers in my house which are using wireless cards to access the net are working while my computer which uses a wire to connect to the router is not getting any internet access.i'm getting help for this problem within the next few days but i thought i would put this out in a troubleshoot forum (and possibly the solution) for the benefit of anyone experiencing the same.
i recently just got this problem, umm the first thing i started to notice was my startup becoming extreamly slow, at that point i thought there was a problem, so when i finally got through the startup, i move my mouse around and like every few seconds it would skip, so basically you move it and then 3 seconds later it skips so you basically see a lag spike or something. it continues for awhile and then stops like maybe 10 min later. but then starts again everytime i open a program ex: counter strike, Azureus, microsoft word.
I'm not sure if this is the right section, but I'm seriously having problems with my Personal Computer a of today. At times when I'm using my computer, everything freezes up for about 5 seconds and turns out to look like this on my screen:And I'm seriously confused. I reboot and everything is fine, until it happens again! Even my Keyboard and Mouse freeze up at random times. Sometimes it's just my mouse, and sometimes it's just my keyboard.
I'm new to this site and I'm not very tech savy, but anyways I'm running a basic, older model e-machines computer with windows xp sp3. When I turn it on it gives me a couple of choices; start windows normally, start in safe mode, last configuration that worked etc. Anyway I've tried all of them and the same thing happens, it goes to the boot screen for a few seconds and then it shuts off, anyone know about this problem? .
A friend of mine in a craft site created a document in WORKS. There were problems for others on that site opening it that have WORD and not WORKS. Is it necassay to have WORKS to receive WORKS files??
The other day I was sitting there playing world of war-craft like any other day, when my personal computer just freezes and nothing works, so I do a hard boot.I was using windows vista at this stage and every time the loading bar would come up, it would go away like windows was about to load and then it would just sit on a endless black screen. After going into safe mode and doing a system restore I was able to get in to windows once before it froze up on another game, I spent 2 days trying to get into windows before reformatting to windows xp.So, after reformatting and putting windows xp on, everything seemed fine, did my windows updates and all the updates for my mobo etc, had the personal computer running for about 6 hours with no problems, go to play world of war-craft and within 5 mins my personal computer froze again. So back to the same problem, except this time the bar loads and i get a blue screen that comes up sometimes, but its only up for about 1 second before windows restarts again. It just keeps going to the windows loading bar, will freeze for 2-3 seconds, continue to load and then restart again by itself. I left it on for about an hour of cycling through by itself but windows still wont load.World of war-craft is on a 2nd HD that hasn't been reformatted, I thought this might be the cause but my personal computer also froze when I was just browsing the net and had the same problem loading windows.Any suggestions? because I'm a bit lost at the moment with what to do, the only other thing I can think of to be the cause would be my ram or gfx card dying? but I hope that's not the case.
I have a xp professional 2000+. Okay this is my main problem, yes i have tried system restore billions of times okay, i turn on my computer it goes through all normal steps, it gets to the windows loading screen after that it is a black screen? my computer works in safe mode though.
I recently got a few notifications of viruses on my computer. Along with it came a lot of adware pop-ups. I downloaded Kaspersky AV 7.0 from their site and am using it as a trial version. I had an older version of McAfee, but hadn't renewed and do not have up-to-date virus definitions. As the title reads, my computer will only work when I boot windows in safe mode with networking. When I try to boot it up regularly, it goes very slow at the log-in screen and then once I log in, there's only a black screen with the mouse pointer. I left it at that window for a few hours hoping it would eventually load. Not the case. Same thing happens when I boot in safe mode with the exception that ctrl+alt+del works and will bring up the Windows Task Manager and then I can run/terminate programs from there. But no start toolbar or icons or anything else. I have done several full scans and they come up with viruses every time.
Turn computer on and it log in and i can only go on the internet for 2 minutes but its very very slow, after the 2 minutes the internet stops working, i restart to safemode and everything is fine. I know its some kind of virus but i don't know what. Also when i restart from the normal mode a window comes up saying .neteventbroadcast has to shut down and it tries shutting it down.
I'm wondering if it's safe to do that. I would guess that individual documents wouldn't be infected. I wouldn't want to infect my new computer. Afterwards, I plan to reformat the drive and re-install the operating system. The infected machine is an older one, so I may use it for simple word processing or older games or give it away. I know that reformating won't destroy old files beyond recovery but I'd hope it would take care of any viruses. I don't have any personal economic info on it since I haven't used a program like Quicken or Money.
I know the machine has at least one virus (about.com) and may have others since many of the programs that should take care of this stopped working after I installed Windows Service Pack 2. I gather others had similar problems after doing the same. Perhaps the most annoying is that I can't access the icons on the bottom of the screen. That includes files you minimize.
My computer worked fine yesterday but started to keep restarting every time my computer was done loading the desktop. I went on Event Viewer and found errors like this:The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load
Yesterday, I was half way through burning an ISO file to disc using [program name deleted my mod.] (have used this many times previously without a problem), when the computer froze. Nothing worked (mouse, keyboard) and the only thing I could do was turn it off at the power button. I left it for 10 minutes, started the computer up again and the (black) screen came up giving 'you need to reboot' and 'insert a bootable disc' messages. I inserted my Windows XP disc as it's the only one I have and don't have a bootable disc, and after while I was given 3 options - one was to repair, one was to escape and I can't remember what the 3rd one was. Anyway I pressed repair and after a minute or two it said it couldn't find the hard drive (or disc) so it was unable to repair and the only thing I could do was quit. After leaving the computer off for a period of time, I switched it back on and it came up with the disc scan screen details and went through the process quickly and it said one of the sectors had been repaired and it was 'back to normal' after that.
The computer is 4 years old (Intel Pentium 4/3.2gHz/1GB RAM/Hard Drive 149GB) and I've had intermittent problems with the CPU overheating due to dust etc which I've cleaned out from time to time (as you do) and all has been well. So, in total this has happened 3 times in 24 hours but on the other two occasions when it froze, after turning it off and leaving it for a couple of minutes, it came back again as normal. The computer seems OK when it's not under load (using the internet/emails/typing documents/photo editing) but the first time you ask it a big question (e.g. copy or convert a disc) it will freeze. Is this a CPU, hard drive or motherboard problem or any other ideas please.

My friends computer turns on for 5 seconds and turns off and during that 5 seconds preiod the computer makes a weird noise like beping sound. His computer is Dell and its XP iam affarid i dont have much of his computers specs. If any one can suggest how he could solve it.
computer now takes half an hour to an hour to reboot. in doing so, it tells me that it does not do the startup and services. it is so slow it is unbelievable. sometimes even being so slow that the words we type take a few seconds to show up on the screen. after working for a time it will invariably hang. or it will shut itself down. in either case we have to reboot, it takes that half an hour to an hour again
what is this tiny little window that keeps popping up on my screen every two or three seconds. my operating system is windows xp home edition. i have already run the virus scan (mcafee)it reads winbo32 and inside the window DOH what can i do to get rid of it? thanks for any help i can get.
I am having a weird stutter(pause like) Thing going on. It happens every 2-3 seconds. I noticed it in a game (Vampire bloodlines) But it does it also when i am at the desktop. It is accompanied by a slight crackle from the speakers. I updated and reistalled my soundcard Drivers. Updated My Vid card drivers. Ran Spybot and adaware, And even used norton system works. I have no idea what is causing this but i cant play games because its like Lag in a multiplayer game! Below is my Dxdiag. Let me know if a can provide more information.
About every 5 seconds the computer lags i looked into it a little bit and noticed about every 5 seconds my computer usage goes from 0 to 51 then back down.
I recently upgraded OS on Dell Dimension XPS t600 to Windows Xp SP2. Witgh SP2, it freezes every 6 seconds for about a second and then releases. It is consistent as if it is polling for something. Even the hard drive crunching stops for that second. I have tried installling all MS updates but it did not help.
I have a Dell Latitude laptop running win xp. I recently cleand my system using spybot S&D, Adware and Hijack. My problem now is I noticed that my audio would cut out about every two seconds regardless of the audio source. Then noticed that the cpu usage meter mirrored this time interval going from 0% to 35% every 2 seconds.
I log into my account, windows loads up and during start up, explorer.exe just crashes, it completly removes itself from the task manager every 20 seconds, desktop icons then dissapear with only the wallpaper/background showing. This is a real problem, I've used Spy Doctor and Kaspersky, it found a few malware and trojans and my system appears to be clean however my explorer.exe continues to crash every 20 seconds, forcing me to launch programs through task manager in order for me to function on the Computer. I've read up this problem throughout google and tried some of the advice thats been given to others with a similar problem as the one im facing with however it still crashes.
As soon as I turn on my computer Dell + XP and I see the sign in screen I type in my password to my account admin account and seconds later is says signing off. I tried restarting in safe mode and last known good configuation mode something like that
I just recently replaced my 200 gig ide harddrive with a 1 TB SATA hardrive, as my old one kicked the bucket. I have reinstalled windows xp and all drivers and got everything working. It is working better than ever ,as my old harddrive was sluggish for some time before it died. But now i am unable to play any 3d games. They boot up fine ,but whenever anything is rendererd in 3d it hangs at random intervals for a good 10-15 seconds then continues for a few seconds and hangs again. I have tried half life 2, swat 4 and ceaser 4. Swat 4 even hangs in the menu screen.
It's just a blink, but long enough to momentarily freeze the cursor and delay a letter while typing. As I look at the Task Manager Performance graph, the CPU usage goes from 0 to 22 every 4 seconds, creating a long line of spikes. The System Idle Process, which really measures the amount of CPU not being used, is always at 99 when no programs are running. So, it seems like there is something "polling" every 4 seconds and it's hanging me up. I have spybot, adaware, hijackthis, Mcafee firewall and AVG anti-virus. Please let me know what you would like to see.
stays hung for about 52 seconds, then unhangs for 52 seconds, then hangs for 52 seconds, I am running an older Compaq desktop with a Pentium III processor, and a 30 GB hard drive (approx. 11 GB free). The system has 256k RAM.It is running Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301_1519). It also has Norton Internet Security 2004 (v7.0.6.17) and Norton Antivirus (10.0.1.13) with current virus definitions.Sometime in mid-September, my husband (who uses this machine, not me) complained that the machine was hanging on a regular basis. He bought and installed System Mechanic 5 from ioio. (No other new software or hardware was installed immediately prior to the appearance of the problem.)He found a number of problems, cleaned them up, defragged the disk, but the hanging problem remained..
He asked me for my help several days ago, and using the information gleaned from this site, we've downloaded and run the Ewido 3.5 scan (and fix - both free), and then Xoftspy v4.16. I purchased a registration key for Xoftspy, and we've run the fix utility from that, cleaning up the threats, but the hanging problem remains.I'm attaching a log that was created tonight from Hijackthis v1.99.1 in the hopes that you can save us from this problem! I have better things to do than struggle with this.
When I go to adjust date/time, I see hours, minutes and seconds showing digitally. But in the desktop tray, the seconds do not show. Is there a way to get the seconds to show?
