View 14 Replies View RelatedMy first post here, hope to get some help...my wife is ready to kill me (and vice versa) as she is accusing me of screwing up a month old Dell Dimension 8400.
I'm at work right now writing this so I can't do anything until I get home tonight. Here's the problem...
I tried downloading a cheat for yahoo pool, when McAfee and Webroot Spysweeper picked up a host of adaware and junk trying to get installed I immediately stopped installing (but of course, some got through). After a few minutes the PC decided to shut down on it's own, without me doing anything. I restarted and the same thing happened almost immediately after start up, it shut down on it's own. I restarted using F8 and used the "restart with latest settings that worked" command. Got on and was able to run McAfee and some other programs where a trojan was found and removed. Everything worked fine after and the computer had been on for 5 or 6 days since then.
I currently have Windows XP Home and I would like to simply install my current hard drive into the new system. But something tells me it's not that easy.I'm going from an old Pentium 4 2.4 to a E6600. New mobo, new everything essentially. But I don't want to have to reinstall everything on the new Hard Drive. If I could,I would like to install my current hard drive into the new system, and then, once that is done, transfer my files onto the new hard drive. BUT will the new system boot up with XP if I install my hard drive in it? Will it go bonkers with all the new components?
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy computer keeps freezin every 10 seconds then stops then again every 10 seconds, and i dont know why i checked task manager and was able to find out every 10 seconds this new thing shows up called mshchy.com and it dissapears right after the freezing is done which last for like less then a second.i tried scanning and deleting the spyware but still it keeps coming.i am using Windows Xp Professional, and also this is a pretty old PC.
View 3 Replies View Relatedmy problem is that my system keeps spiking to 57% then back down again for a split second every 2 seconds. This causes my system to suddenly pause then unpause again, very frustrating. Everything is affected- video, sound, mouse cursor. At around the same time my system begins spiking, my internet connection goes down(talk about a bad day).so when i restarted my computer the internet connection starts "Aquiring network address" then it gives up but the funny thing is the other two computers in my house which are using wireless cards to access the net are working while my computer which uses a wire to connect to the router is not getting any internet access.i'm getting help for this problem within the next few days but i thought i would put this out in a troubleshoot forum (and possibly the solution) for the benefit of anyone experiencing the same.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy Inspiron 8100 laptop had a hard drive failure - click of death. After replacing the HD (installed with XP and one I know works) the system boots up but very slowly. I should say that it did the same thing before replacing the HD when I was trying to run a disc recovery CD.It's slow right from the BIOS POST - which took about 15mins, and right on throught the WIN XP startup. Took 1hr to get to login and over 2 hours to load system programs. It seems to freeze for 20secs then work for a brief moment. EG I have to hold down a key for 20secs, then 1 character will appear. This brief period of activity coincides with a flicker of the HD activity LED. This was the same pattern even when I checked the BIOS setup on first booting up - so I don't think this is a Windows issue.Running a dignostic is going to be difficult as it would take days to install and run at this rate.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi recently just got this problem, umm the first thing i started to notice was my startup becoming extreamly slow, at that point i thought there was a problem, so when i finally got through the startup, i move my mouse around and like every few seconds it would skip, so basically you move it and then 3 seconds later it skips so you basically see a lag spike or something. it continues for awhile and then stops like maybe 10 min later. but then starts again everytime i open a program ex: counter strike, Azureus, microsoft word.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just put a new 250GB HDD in an Intel D865 GLC motherboard with a 3GB Pentium cpu, but I can't get online! And I installed a new XP Pro.There's a net adapter built into the mobo: 1394 Net Adapter. It says it's connecting, but when I go thru the wizard for either the internet connection or the network connection, it doesn't get read. The little screen moved halfway toward connectivity and then it gives me a new page. I thought I'd work around it by disabling it, and I installed a D-Link NIC. The computer won't even recognize the D-Link! The Device Manager says it's working properly. I called Comcast, twice, and they came to the conclusion after going thru various routines that my computer is not reading the 1394 Net Adapter.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI decided to use a computer at an Elementary school I work at in Japan. I switched it on and then checked my email and surfed the web. I decided to shut down the computer after I finished. The next day a teacher says do not shut down the computer because last night teachers could not use the computer. Is this just a security reason once you shut down you can't use the computer again for that day? I always thought it was simply reenter the password and reconnect to the internet again to use the computer again.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery now and then when starting my pc (WinXP), it seems to enter a hanging mode. I know when the problem is occurring because the sound card icon doesn't show on the task bar.I don't know if all programs are non-functioning, but the internet connection and the sound card are not only when this occurs. The main problem: the pc will not shutdown. Bringing up the task manager won't work either, leaving me no choice but to shut off the pc via surge switch. What can cause this problem?

When me and my wife moved in with her parents to help take care of her father. When he passed I was givin his computer wich was left on and password protected. What I did was create another user account as an administrater and demoted him to just a user figuring that would allow me to remove his password.I forgot to bump him back up to administrator before I deleted the other user and now I am stuck with only 1 account and it has no administrator rights.I do not have the windows XP disk either =/ I would like to change the account back to administrator and retain the files as well.

The computer in question has an amd 1,1 ghz athlon, 1 agp video card, 1 pci dual monitor video card (I run 3 monitors), a dvd drive, a cd-rw drive, a 3.5" floppy drive, a soundblaster card, 56k modem, 40 gig hd and an ethernet card for dsl.I'm running xp home edition with sp2. I tried unplugging various cards and drives, but it still will not boot.

I'm running Windows XP home sp2 on a WD Raptor hooked to a Gigabyte 7NNXP mobo inside a Lian Li tower. I have all the latest drivers, BIOS updates and Windows updates. The problem is that when turning off the computer from Windows it continues to run, (Windows shuts down but power light is on and fans are running). At this point I used to be able to turn it off by pressing the power button [Instant off set in BIOS]. Then that stopped working and I tried the four second delay after pressing power button option in BIOS and that is working but I'm afraid something is not right and continuing without isolating the problem will result in broken computer.
