Install Current Hard Dirve To The New Computer Safely?
Apr 30, 2007
I currently have Windows XP Home and I would like to simply install my current hard drive into the new system. But something tells me it's not that easy.I'm going from an old Pentium 4 2.4 to a E6600. New mobo, new everything essentially. But I don't want to have to reinstall everything on the new Hard Drive. If I could,I would like to install my current hard drive into the new system, and then, once that is done, transfer my files onto the new hard drive. BUT will the new system boot up with XP if I install my hard drive in it? Will it go bonkers with all the new components?
My computer came with a 80gb HD with windows xp pro.. I had took a 180gb hd from another comp. that was running windows xp home and connected it as a slave drive. A window popped warning me that vital info. would be deleted in order to format/ partition the second drive (180gb HD). Was this a mistake doing it in this manner? If not...How would I go about using the whole "180gb" and not just the 35gb it's only allowing me to use. And is there any way to move files so that they will be protected?
I'm trying to reinstall my Win XP and so to format my hard disk to have that fresh start. Ive configured my boot sequence to boot first on CD. but when I restart my computer every things still the same. I cannot find that key to press to boot from cd or anything at all. it just open to windows. ive tried to press F12 and F8 in an attempt that this could be it. but still nothing. when I continue to windows without taking the installer off the drive my screen would flicker.
Does anyone know of a list of best practices or third party tool(s) for safely installing and completely uninstalling applications in Windows XP? I want to be able to install applications into Windows XP so that if the app were to corrupt my Windows installation, I can remove it completely and restore my Windows XP back to a ?good? state. I've installed hundreds, maybe thousands of apps on Windows XP platforms. I've tried all sorts of methods for installing apps. These methods include:
? Running Windows in a ?clean boot? configuration: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 ? Creating a system restore before each installation ? Using tools that monitor installs and supposedly provide a way to uninstall apps like Advanced Uninstaller Pro: http://www.innovative-sol.com/uninstaller/index.htm? Etc., etc............
The "Safely Remove Hardware" function running in my eMachine XP Home Edition includes USB flash drives in its warning list. While I recognize that mechanical storage devices such as CD/DVD drives, etc., should be addressed, is there any kind of subtle danger to any system functions if I ignore the "safely remove" process when connecting and/or disconnecting USB flash drives?
How do I install 2 hard drives from seperate computers into 1 computer? I have tried the plug and play routine without success. Both hard drives have the XP OS on them and they work in their respective chassis. I know that one will have to be the master and the other the slave but I am not sure how to set everything up. Additionally, their are many programs and drivers on the prospective slave that need to be accessible.
I'm having trouble either writing code for or finding a freeware utillity to read the current screen resolution.I need it to be accurate, and I need the resolution to be output in the format: {Friendly Name} {width} {height} {color depth} {refresh rate}I should probably have it list all of this one line each, output to standard output.
I recently reinstalled windows xp pro and now the "system" proccess is always using all free cpu. It's not "system idle proccess" just system. After installing right off the xp pro disk, all i did was install the updates up to and through SP2, my motherboard drivers, video drivers, winamp and AIM. Other than that, nothing else has been done, yet system is still using all free cpu.I checked to make sure all drivers were current.
I've recently replaced my old LCD PC monitor with my TV LCD monitor which is 20"however the only time I can read writing clearly is when I set the resolution to the TV's stats at 640x480 - very clear but the prob is that everything TOO big so I can't get around the screen. How do I keep this clarity at 640x480 but make everything fit the screen?I've tried different resolutions but nothing works as clear as the above.
Recently my video card died, and so my system went kaput. Originally I had thought it might be a driver problem so I uninstalled all Nvidia drivers from my system - including by accident my motherboard chipset drivers (I have an Asus A8N-SLI).Now when I try to boot with a new video card swapped in I get an endless reboot cycle. I disabled automatic rebooting and I got a blue screen with STOP 0x0000007B. I do have a clean installation of windows on another partition that I keep around for troubleshooting, and that works fine.Is there any way to save my current installation short of a complete reinstall?
You can see which previous items that have been run or are currently running on your system tray by clicking on Start >> Settings >> Taskbar and Start Menu, tick the box that says "Hide inactive icons" then click "customize". There you will see a list of Current and Past items. If you would like to remove the past items then follow these steps: 1. Start Regedit. If you are unfamiliar with regedit please refer to the FAQ on how to get started. 2.Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerTrayNotify 3. Delete the keys Past Icons Stream and Icon Streams 4. Exit regedit and restart Explorer. 5. To end explorer right clicking anywhere on the system tray and choosing "Task Manager". Click on the "Processes" tab and find Explorer.exe. Click the End Process button. Your whole systemtray should disappear. 6. To restart Explorer, while still in Task Manager, go to the "applications" tab and choose the New Task.. button. Simply type Explorer.exe and click OK.

I have taken the drive out of the computer and am going to put the drive into an external USB Hard Drive enclosure. Can I reformat/partition and install Windows 2000 Profesional onto this drive via the USB Hard Drive enclosure?

Is it possible to install a 2nd Hard Disk, install XP on that, and then have the 1st Hard Disk boot menu offer the choice of booting its copy of XP, OR the copy on the 2nd Hard Disk?I imagine editing of boot.ini by hand would be necessary.Basically, I want a second Hard Disk for the KID'S setup, but don't want to use the BIOS to switch between the two, just use the boot menu.
computer about 5 years ago, it came with Windows XP Home edition reinstalled. The manufacture did not include a windows XP Home disc - instead there is a Windows XP Home code sticker on the back of the computer.

To anyone that might be able to help... I've had this external hard drive for a long time and I haven't been able to access it to store lots of music and videos on. My computer sees that it is there, but like I had said earlier, I can't use it. It won't let me see it unless I go to Device Manager. My computer is getting old on me and it's been places most labtops shouldn't have gone... Once in Purgatory, and now, it's on Hell's surface. I get the safely remove hardware icon down by my clock, but I don't want to remove it, I want to use it. I want it to show up in my drives so I can instantly see how much space I have left and what not... I went through the Troubleshooter, tried every possible way that I can think of, the ways the troubleshooter.
I'm having problems formatting a hdd to install Winxp. A friend gave me his old HP 743a comp (2.4 Ghz, 512 mb ram) because the monitor kept going black. I am fairly sure the problem was one of the CPU heatsink clips was broken and not allowing contact between heatsink and cpu. It doesn't go black now that I have fixed the clip. He removed his HDD, so I bought a second hand 10 Gb just to see if I could get the thing running. I formatted the HDD with a win98se boot disk. Everything goes well except I can't get the "start with cdrom support" page to come up. The Cd drive is a CD-RW/DVD combo drive (32 x 10 x 12 x 40x). Sorry I can't find the brand and model number at the moment. I did check up on it a week ago and it's only supported by win2000 and winxp. I was wondering if this could be the problem?
I have a Sony VAIO desktop running Windows XP. I purchased a Comstar 160MB External USB2 Hard-Drive and installed it. Since Windows XP is supposed to have the drivers that are necessary, no driver disk was included, and none was needed. The problem developed when my Windows XP began to give me problems later. I had to re-install Windows XP. I did that, and I downloaded all Windows XP up dates (including Service Pack 2). Now, this Windows installation does not install the external hard-drive. Windows recognizes that there is "a USB2 device," but Windows states that there are no drivers and asks me to furnish them.
