The computer suddenly turns off - when I reload it I get the disc check routing kick in - sometimes there are some 'truncated file' messages - sometimes not.I've checked for viruses and full 'disc check' with no problems.I would say that there is no predictability to this happening - at least that's what I thought - but it happens 'solid as a rock' when I try to defragment my C drive.

The checking will always stall at 0 percent and not check the drive. How can I get it to work? If I skip the disc check my computer will start up.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. try changing video adapters. "Check with your hardware vendor for aany BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use SAFE mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance SStartup options, and then select Safe Mode."

Repair did not work, so I ended up reinstalling XP, but in another folder, as I didn't want to lose settings etc.
In "windows2", when I try to enter My Docs., etc on "windows1" it says
"access denied". How do I get at "favourites, Docs etc on "windows1" I have heaps of genealogy files etc that I cant access.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS Gen 2 computer (3.2 GHz P4) in which I was running a striped RAID array (2x250). It had worked fine for about a year, when one of the drives failed (the original that came with the computer) so I thought it would be a good time to upgrade and change configuration, so I installed 2 new Western Digital SATA drives (500 GB). The computer recognized the drives and let me create a mirrored array, so I started reloading Windows. When I got to the F6 part I put in the floppy disk with the RAID drivers and now I keep getting this error messag The only other thing I've done to the computer recently was upgrade from 2 GB of RAM to 4 GB, but everything was working for at least a month before this happened so I assume it's unrelated.

I have a HP Pavilion P3, it originally came with Windows ME, at a later date i installed an upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition. I have the original 3 disks (2 ea system recovery, and 1 application recovery), I also have the original XP Home upgrade disk with product key. I have already tried this once but it would not work-- I inserted disk 1 (hp system recovery) and booted the computer, after only a second or two the screen went blue and informed me the hard drive could not be found. I thought maybe it was because I was not using ME, so I installed the upgrade disk and booted. It began doing its thing then after loading several files it informed me of a windows error and it shut down windows.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI am trying to reload XP on a sony Vaio machine. First off, when it comes up with 'press any key to boot to CD' nothing works. I have done searches on this and have tried both PS2 and usb keyboards. I have also tried to access bios but nothing loads it.I have tried esc, tab, del, f1-f12 and no matter what, windows continues to load. I know the keyboard works because once windows loads, I can type. So this is an issue with the usb keyboard and bios I assume but I cannot get to bios to enable the usb support.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
neither wmp 11 or roxio recognizes a blank disc. when i try to burn a disc (dvd or cd) both wmp 11 and roxio tells me to insert a blank disc. i have tried putting a disc in first, or wait for the program to tell me to insert disc but neither way works!:
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.

I already used cd-bootable Knoppix to copy all documents i needed to rescue. At this point a complete Re-install would be great, but alas, no install disk came with this notebook, And i lost the recovery discs i made. View 5 Replies View RelatedI get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.
im running a dell dimension 4600 and just today there is no sound from my speakers. I tried re-installing my driver, checked to see if it's muted, checked BIOS. It was working yesterday...Can anyone tell me how to check my Sound Playback device and playback programs? I'm using Media Player and iTunes I tried other speakers and there is still no sound Also, forgot to mention that my speaker makes a static/fuzzy noise when i turn up.

WinExplorer -> right click C: -> go to properties -> go to tools click error check. Will get message that error check will start at the next start up. Problem. Error check runs fine, and makes 5 checks. At the 5th check at about 98% you better be there and when it hits 100% be a quick reader so you can see if there are any bad clusters. The screen stays there about 3 seconds and then disappears. If you have bad clusters the HD might be going bad. Question. How can I make the Error Check summary screen stay put while I read it or how can I make it "log" someplace where I can go and read it at my leisure?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have tried to install a new xp pro sp3 disc on a new computer but have been getting errors in the installation. I have tried 3 different times but it says that the disc is missing some components and when it is final it does not work properly.
I finally talked to a tech person that asked me if I had another disc and I have an older sp2 disc. He said to install that but when I put in the key for my new disc it does not work with my older disc. I finally put in my old key and it worked fine. THe installation went off without a hitch but I won't be able to use my old key when I activate it. When I install the sp3 download will I be able to change my key to the new disc key?
