View 5 Replies View RelatedEvery time I start up my computer and goes to the desktop, there are no icons, toolbars, or even the "Start" button, it only shows the desktop background, and all I can use is the Task Manager to access a couple of programs. I tried using Norton Antivirus, but did not find anything, so I uninstalled it. My "CPU Usage" is at 0 and 1% almost dead, I saw that the explorer.exe is missing. I ran it with the Task Manager, and it made the computer reboot the wrong way. When it did, it did not go to the desktop it just showed black screen with the little "-" on the top left and couldn't do anything and the buffer is barely doing anything, you know, when you open a program, the light flashes rapidly and making noises,

The icons are moved, and a different size. But if he then reboots, they'll return to their normal positions. This has happened many times. It seems like a weird profile thing, but I'm stumped.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have two problems the first, my system crashes every time that I try to change an icon on the desktop. If I want to rename or delete a icon I have to use explore to do so. Also some times when using the explore the system crashes. I have run virus scans, defrag, Norton Windows Utilities, and Spy Sweeper all come back clean. I go to the task list to check what processes are running but everything seems to low. The cpu shows 2% to 4% usage. My second problem is USB connections. I can no longer sync with my Dell Axim. I have disconnected and reconnected the USB connection and reinstalled the Microsoft 4.2 Activesync software but nothing helps. My USB printers still works.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am working on an older Dell P4 with Win XP which is having some odd problems. First of all, when it loads up there are no desktop icons, only the background picture. I've tried hitting CAD to see what I could see but all that happens is that the hourglass comes on for a second and then goes away. Same thing happens with ctrl-shift-esc. You can not bring up the Task Manager menu. Clicking the right mouse button also does not bring up a menu. I figured that I might try to do a system restore in Safe Mode though when I restart and hit F8 and choose to go to the safe mode, I get the "Safe Mode" text around the outer edges of the screen, but still no desktop icons. I haven't found much in the CMOS which I can play around with, just standard settings options.
As far as I know, this computer was working ok until a few days ago when it started to intermittently have the no desktop icons problem. The user says that the problems seemed to correlate with their virus program, though I am not sure. I have tried all the startup under options under the F8 menu and booting with the XP sys disc to see if any rebuilding could be done though have made no progress.
i have searched everywhere to do this , no site seemed to know how to get rid of it so i am helping the troubled with this problem, well not really a problem but an adjustment..it is a piece of cake. first right click on the desktop, go to arrange icons by ,uncheck lock web items to desktop(bang it's done).

View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 2k to XP. On 2K i could have all my desktop icons and icons for programs i use down on the task bar above open applications. Im sure theres a way to do this on XP so i dont have to go to my desktop or the start menu every time to open a new program.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI remember few days ago.. my kaspersky identified some system file as a trojan.. so it probably a misunderstanding when i was installing system mechanic. it got deleted.. and i have this automatic option to delete them after they are put in backup in kaspersky.
now whenever i open my pc, my desktop and taskbar and start menu, etc goes away after a few seconds! Now i rely on the task manager..
Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.

View 13 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS Gen 2 computer (3.2 GHz P4) in which I was running a striped RAID array (2x250). It had worked fine for about a year, when one of the drives failed (the original that came with the computer) so I thought it would be a good time to upgrade and change configuration, so I installed 2 new Western Digital SATA drives (500 GB). The computer recognized the drives and let me create a mirrored array, so I started reloading Windows. When I got to the F6 part I put in the floppy disk with the RAID drivers and now I keep getting this error messag The only other thing I've done to the computer recently was upgrade from 2 GB of RAM to 4 GB, but everything was working for at least a month before this happened so I assume it's unrelated.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile I wait to see if I get an answer on how I can fix my current problem, thought i would check on how I might completely relaod computer, just in case I don't get a fix. I have a HP Pavilion P3, it originally came with Windows ME, at a later date i installed an upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition. I have the original 3 disks (2 ea system recovery, and 1 application recovery), I also have the original XP Home upgrade disk with product key. I have already tried this once but it would not work-- I inserted disk 1 (hp system recovery) and booted the computer, after only a second or two the screen went blue and informed me the hard drive could not be found. I thought maybe it was because I was not using ME, so I installed the upgrade disk and booted. It began doing its thing then after loading several files it informed me of a windows error and it shut down windows.
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe computer suddenly turns off - when I reload it I get the disc check routing kick in - sometimes there are some 'truncated file' messages - sometimes not.I've checked for viruses and full 'disc check' with no problems.I would say that there is no predictability to this happening - at least that's what I thought - but it happens 'solid as a rock' when I try to defragment my C drive.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to reload XP on a sony Vaio machine. First off, when it comes up with 'press any key to boot to CD' nothing works. I have done searches on this and have tried both PS2 and usb keyboards. I have also tried to access bios but nothing loads it.I have tried esc, tab, del, f1-f12 and no matter what, windows continues to load. I know the keyboard works because once windows loads, I can type. So this is an issue with the usb keyboard and bios I assume but I cannot get to bios to enable the usb support.

I have a SONY VAIO 2.53 GHZ P4 Processor, 512 RAM, Windows XP pro (not so valid edition) 2 year old Comp. And I have 2 hard drives both 200GB, C: (windows and programs) D: video editing files...
I have a project to turn in TOMORROW... I could get in Big trouble and Fail a class if i dont get this done TONIGHT
SITUATION:
Last Night I noticed when I was editing that some of my avi exports were all distorted and fragmented... So i figured "I havent EVER ran defrag (stupid me) on this hard drive maybe I should defrag it" So I looked into a defrag program called "diskeeper" I defragged C: (windows drive) and attempted to defrag D:.... I came to my comp and discovered an error that just said failure with the drive or something... After that I could not access (D I restarted, diskcheck did not work, and I dont want to do system restore... I posted on another websites forum and someone said I probably went over the 137GB limit... I think when I went over the 137GB limit, it possibly overflowed over some kind of boot files or something that lets windows read the disk i dont know (not that techincal with computers)So i looked into that, and I have an ATA card... and Windows NO service pack XP pro... Ive heard things about having a 48 bit bios or something... And after installing WINDOWS XP SP1... I try to get on my computer and i load windows
