I am running windows XP home edition, file system FAT 32. Whenever I start my computer the disc check always wants to run on one or more of my drives. The checking will always stall at 0 percent and not check the drive. How can I get it to work? If I skip the disc check my computer will start up.
View 2 RepliesThe computer suddenly turns off - when I reload it I get the disc check routing kick in - sometimes there are some 'truncated file' messages - sometimes not.I've checked for viruses and full 'disc check' with no problems.I would say that there is no predictability to this happening - at least that's what I thought - but it happens 'solid as a rock' when I try to defragment my C drive.
View 3 Replies View Relatedi've been having slow computer problems. lots of generic host errors and some programs that would hang and freeze the computer. i went to the Security area of this site for help. i had no major problems just a lot of startup programs i didn't need.i downloaded two programs to help me with that. then i decided to run defrag. that froze at 3% done. i also tried check disk, i got the screen to restart the computer. it was running fine. i had lots of bad sector stuff in stage 4. i went to bed at 24% next morning it still was at 24%. we left it on and it still would not move. so we restarted. i went and did a few more things, deleting things i no longer wanted and so on. last night i tried check disk again and i went to bed at 20% (tired). this morning there were no bad sector items, but it was still at 20%. i gave it a bit longer, but still nothing.

Since doing so I have tried all manner of ways to restore Spell Check on IE and thence OE. I have downloaded ieSpell, with no result. I have tried to get them to give me some help, but no reply! I tried to run check disk on the c: drive but a box tells me that 'windows was unable to complete the disk check'.I also noticed that I tried to analyze the disk for defragmenting but nothing happens it simply says that 'disk defragmenter could not start' - I have 23% disk space left (if that means anything).

Yesterday I had an error message: 16-Bit MS-Dos Subsystem C:Documents and Settings.......DesktopDisk Cleanup.Ink The NTVDM CPU has encountered and illegal instruction.with the options to either close or ignore. The ignore didn't do anything. I right clicked on "disc cleanup" and checked users and it was set to the administer. I even tried a different user but that didn't work either.I have run three virus scans: AVG 8.5,SUPERAnti spyware,and Malwarebytes' Anti Malware. I tried Hijackthis but have no idea what/how to doi with it. I have run registery cleaner,and a few other things that I have found on this site. Now I am getting an error message: C:WindowsSystem 32cleanmgr.exe is not a valid Win 32 application.
I have tried to do restore and also recovery with the disc's I burned when I first got my computer, to no avail, a Tech at Best Buy said I may have a spyware called smit fraud on my system and said he could get rid of it for $400.00, I wish I could afford it but I don't even have $4 bucks to my name and my wife refuses to shell it out. I was in a car accident 3 years ago and have lost 70% of the use of my right arm I am unemployed and it is hard for me to do the job I was trained to do which is cooking, I am a Certified Chef of 22 years now I can't even hold a knife. This computer is all I have to keep me from going insane and it has become so slow that it now runs at a snails pace, Please can someone help me? my wife did allow me to upgrade the connection from dial-up to DSL as we got a deal from our provider at $14.99 a month for a year which saves us on the extra phone line and all but the computer is still slow.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. try changing video adapters. "Check with your hardware vendor for aany BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use SAFE mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance SStartup options, and then select Safe Mode."

I uninstalled some preloaded Windows programs, I reinstalled some of them, but now my laptop's all funny. When I connect to The Internet, any program that I open freezes for like 10 minutes, after which it unfreezes. During this time I normally restart my computer, with no success. If I open Windows Live Messenger and Internet Explorer 7 together it freezes normally. Pinball, WordPad, Sound Recorder, and Volume Control cannot be restored. Also, I tried using my Toshiba Recovery DVD, with no success. It says Loading RAMDISK Image, then it reboots and loads the exact same system with no changes made.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running XP Home on a Sony VAIO. The PC has a partitioned HD: C (main), & D (storage). I defrag every night.
This evening, I got the dreaded "not enough disc space to complete disc defragmenter" message. Suddenly tonight I'm showing only 2% free space on drive C. I went in and changed my System Restore percentage from 12% to 6%. Now I'm showing 6% free space (but still can't defrag).
I shouldn't have had to change my System Restore percentage tho. I'm sure that's not the culprit. Up until last night the C drive was nowhere near this full. Something's there tonight that wasn't yesterday. ...A whole LOT of something. The Defrag graph is showing a nearly FULL C drive with a LOT of red "fragmented" files"
I've been doing a bit of downloading, but after it's on the desktop (part of C), I move it to the D storage drive (which has a LOT of free space remaining).
Something's fishy. I'm no expert, but I'm thinking I need to find some type of application to tell me what's suddenly on that drive taking up all this space. Anyone have any helpful suggestions?
neither wmp 11 or roxio recognizes a blank disc. when i try to burn a disc (dvd or cd) both wmp 11 and roxio tells me to insert a blank disc. i have tried putting a disc in first, or wait for the program to tell me to insert disc but neither way works!:
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhen i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.

I already used cd-bootable Knoppix to copy all documents i needed to rescue. At this point a complete Re-install would be great, but alas, no install disk came with this notebook, And i lost the recovery discs i made. View 5 Replies View RelatedI get a little confused by terms like restore vs recovery, which are often interchanged incorrectly IMO -and then there are the terms bootable disc and startup disc, which can also get confusing - and I have seen other terms used also.
please explain exactly what you mean by the "bootable XP CD". I have a new XPsp2 home edition pc, and I had a millennium before that (which I made a "startup disc" for in add/remove programs - so I guess a startup disc is yet another term for boot disc - it was only a 3-1/2" diskette (less than a meg), and it would get my millennium to boot by typing "scanreg /restore" at a prompt that you eventually came to.
For my XP, I immediately made a Compaq "recovery dvd" (it took 2-dvd's) utilizing the "Compaq recovery cd-dvd creator" in start/programs/pc tools. This dvd (can also use cd's but it takes 8 or 9 cd's I believe) contains everything that is on the pc (from the factory), and which is also in the system recovery partition D:. There is also something called a "Recovery Tools CD", which I did not burn, since it did not seem necessary, after
reading about it in the "troubleshooting and system recovery guide" that came with my Compaq. I will burn that one to, if you can explain what it will do, that I can't ultimately achieve by using the "recovery dvd". The manual said that one of the things the "recovery tools cd" did was to remove the system recovery partition (drive D), so you could use it - but I'm sure there is another way of doing that from within the pc once you got it running using the recovery dvd - am I right - I've never messed around with partitioning, since I have no need to.
My new XP did not come with any "bootable CD" per se, and I made the "recovery dvd", as stated above. So please shed some light on what the "bootable XP CD" is that you refer to (because you said that a "restore Cd is really overkill" - I assume you mean the "recovery CD" that I mentioned). Also please provide your comments on the "recovery tools CD", and any other comments you have on the various terminologies I have mentioned above.
im running a dell dimension 4600 and just today there is no sound from my speakers. I tried re-installing my driver, checked to see if it's muted, checked BIOS. It was working yesterday...Can anyone tell me how to check my Sound Playback device and playback programs? I'm using Media Player and iTunes I tried other speakers and there is still no sound Also, forgot to mention that my speaker makes a static/fuzzy noise when i turn up.

WinExplorer -> right click C: -> go to properties -> go to tools click error check. Will get message that error check will start at the next start up. Problem. Error check runs fine, and makes 5 checks. At the 5th check at about 98% you better be there and when it hits 100% be a quick reader so you can see if there are any bad clusters. The screen stays there about 3 seconds and then disappears. If you have bad clusters the HD might be going bad. Question. How can I make the Error Check summary screen stay put while I read it or how can I make it "log" someplace where I can go and read it at my leisure?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have tried to install a new xp pro sp3 disc on a new computer but have been getting errors in the installation. I have tried 3 different times but it says that the disc is missing some components and when it is final it does not work properly.
I finally talked to a tech person that asked me if I had another disc and I have an older sp2 disc. He said to install that but when I put in the key for my new disc it does not work with my older disc. I finally put in my old key and it worked fine. THe installation went off without a hitch but I won't be able to use my old key when I activate it. When I install the sp3 download will I be able to change my key to the new disc key?

Firefox is working fine, but IE7 is not. Also Steam, Ventrilo, and AIM work fine, but programs such as, UBI Internet, and Gas Powered Games Internet, and almost all games do not work. Plus my Tablet side of things hasn't worked in a long time and I was hoping the clean install would fix that. But my recovery DVD isn't working (could be user error). I DO have apps that I need to keep and I think I've backed them up to my external HD correctly.
