View 5 Replies View RelatedA friend of mine gave me an HP Pavilion ze4400. It had Windows XP installed on it when he gave it to me. I moved out of the area and forgot to take the XP CD with me. I was having problems with picking up wireless networks using my USB wireless adapter. Uninstalling and reinstalling the program for the adapter didn't fix anything, in fact, it made it worse. So I thought I would try using an XP CD to correct the problems that way. I had no idea that XP CDs weren't all the same.I put the CD that I had for my IBM laptop in the HP and it started to install. After about 10 minutes or so, I got a "Fatal Error":"An error has been encountered that prevents Setup from continuing. One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. The operation was canceled by the user.Press OK to view the Setup log file"The Systel Setup Log:"Error:The signature for Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade is invalid. I recently purchased a Western Digital laptop hard drive for my HP Presario X1015US laptop - and got the part where it said : Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed on my computer. I have tried two new drives now and it is simply not getting past this point. I have gone in to the bios to ensure it is booting from Windows Operating System CD and it is still not finding. HP told me I have to check motherboard? Is there anything else I can do or am I going to need to buy a new laptop (the old hard drive is no longer working...started making weird noise).

I wrk for a company that has a server with Windows 2003. There are multiple 2000 and XP users who map drives from the server. Now here is where the problem begins. 2000 has no problms at all mapping drives. XP however has an issue with one folder. No matter what letter you pick, when you map the drive you get an error message "Setup requires a different version of windows. Check to make sure you are running setup on the Windows platform for which it is intended. Error 102" First of all im not running any type of setup. Im merely mapping a drive. This error occurs regardless of what drive letter you pick. And the really weird part, is once mapped the drive will open in Explorer or any other mode EXCEPT through My Computer and double clicking on the drive. If you right click the drive and hit open or explore, both will open the drive just fine. You double click and you get the error. When you right click the drive you also get an "autoplay" feature which makes no sense being its a folder on the server.
It acts like it has lost its association. Like if a JPG file is associated with nothing it wont open, but if you tell it to open with paint then it will. Its really weird and after weeks of searching i have found not a single similar problem to this one i can relate or get help from. It just plain makes no sense. I am going to unshare and reshare the folder when everyone leaves and see if that helps, but it works fine in 2000 currently and not in XP just in my computer.
Trying to install XP on a SATA W.D. Raptor I've did it before but now when I put the floppy in for the Drivers I keep getting TXTSETUP.OEM missing I've checked the floppy for its contents and it is there, The drive has XP Pro on it now but been running it for a year and like to clean it up.

View 10 Replies View RelatedThis is kind of related to my ctrl+alt+del button, as well as my favorites button freezing. Once I am online for 30 minutes or so, when I go to an image and right click>save as, the window will freeze and I will have to close it. Same with my favorites button, after 30 minutes or so being online, it will freeze when i click it. I can use the Favorites drop-down list (in between view and tools) fine, so that isnt too big of a problem. This is also the same with my crtl+alt+del, it will freeze after being on 30 minutes or so. But it doesnt happen everytime, just sometimes.

And afterwords for about 3 days, it seemed to function ok. Then it just quit booting. I told him we would need to reinstall windows. I was kind of shocked we did not have to in the first place. Anyways, So now I am trying to reinstall windows:I can get it to boot from the windows cd, it goes through the standard list of drivers, and at the end says, "setup is starting windows"... Then it just hangs there indefinately. Typically after this, you get to the screen that asks you if you want to install windows, then you hit f8 to agree to there stuff, then you get to partition ect. I mention these things so you will know what part I am talking about.

I've tested faxing from Word on my PC and it works fine. However, when other users try to install the fax client, the setup hangs asking for the fx* setup files. I've tried different XPSP2 CDs, copying the files to a local directory, making sure that the users have local admin rights (and even domain admin rights) but to no avail. The files are already in the system32 directory so in theory the setup doesn't even need to copy them. Even if I delete them, it doesn't work. Our corporate SMS team reckons that there isn't any policy which could
cause the problem.
On Internet Explorer every time I right click anywhere, on any webpage, other than the top menu bar or a flash object, a new IE8 window will pop up and load my home page. Which is becoming a real annoyance. All other browsers work fine. I have ran virus scans, removed at reinstalled IE8 even formatted my HDD. Which sorted the problem at first, but now after windows updates the problems is back.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi have XP Pro Basically I was messing around in file types because my folder icons were botched. Ran TweakUI to fix folder icons, but here is what happened. double clicking a folder opened the search window. So i went into file types and created a new action, and pointed it at explorer.exe from my windows directory. Now, the problem is, when i double click it opens the folder in a new window, instead of the same.
when I am in the advanced settings of file types (tools-folder options-file types) the Edit and Remove buttons will not light up, but i am the administrator. Restore defaults doesn't work.
Is there a backend way to fix this anyone knows of, short of reformatting ?? system restore to a previous date did nothing.

i recently had to format my hard drive and reinstall windows xp pro.after i reloaded and reudated everything i ran into a problem. once i turn the computer on and double click on my computer it takes about 5 minutes to find the contents.once the contents are found i can
close my computer and double click it again it shows up right away.it seems to me that when the computer shuts down and then i restart that particular path to my computer is lost and it has to try to find it everytime i start the computer. dont know where to look or have any idea why this would be happening.
Using XP Home, If I click on Start>Run after a reboot, the Run window opens normally. If I open any program and then click on Start>Run, nothing visible happens! Nothing. I have tried to correct this by right clicking and using: Properties>Customize>Advanced, but without success.Haven’t been able to fix this with Tweak UI or by using sfc. AVG has not found a virus.Observations:Switching to Classic View the link works normally every time.Clicking Start>Run and nothing happens, then looking in Task Manager gives the following information: under Applications, Run is shown as running right clicking this entry and selecting Go To Process shows the explorer.exe processRun opens every time by holding down the Windows Key and pressing R.
