I am speeding up a friend's computer. When I go to Start/Run/msconfig, nothing happens. It doesn't freeze up or give an error message, just lets me go on with my life with out the least sign that I have done anything.He purchased it from a rental place and I figure that they locked out some programs. I am a newbie, over my head.

Title says it all. Not sure when it actually disappeared. Noticed it while studying for A+ exam today. Here is what I have tried that hasn't worked:
(1) Missing BOOT.INI file. It is there.
(2) Registry corruption. Nope. The entry doesn't appear in the expected location.
(3) Improper permissions set on BOOT.INI. Nope. I can open it. Plus there is no Security tab in the Properties window, which raises another eyebrow of "huh?"

View 30 Replies View RelatedI have an emachines bought in 2004... a few months ago we replaced the motherboard, videocard, upgraded to 1.5g ram, new fan, power supply etc. I'm an avid World of Warcraft: TBC user, and no its not the greatest graphics but worked fine for me... here recently it started blue screening and saying it was dumping physical memory. so i did system restor to a few months prior because i knew it was fine then, but after the restore it was missing .dll's for certain programs and wow was damaged horribly. i then attempted to restore back to today and all my restore points were gone... ran msconfig to load base apps and then attempted to use an older restore disk to start over... my main concern at that time was that i wanted to reformat c: but it told me i had to dismount the volume first.. and when i answered "y" to the "force dismount" question it told me it couldn't... it gets worse too.. now i can't even load windows because it tells me invalid partition table. i don't have the cd for xp (was preinstalled) and my original restore disks are useless (the silver has flaked completely off in spots even after careful storage for past few years.)...

View 6 Replies View Relatedas i turned on my laptop today i realized that there is no start menu. All my desktop icons are there, though they take longer than normal to load and taskmanager works fine and i have all my navigation menus as well. I am also unable to run msconfig, even in Command Prompt. When i type in msconfig, i get the following message.msconfig is not a recognized command. Another problem that i have been having is that if i click on a window, and taskmanager was infront of it, taskmanager does not move behind my active window. I am running windows XP, on a Presario V2000 with a 60 gig hd, and a 512. i have tried everything to get it to come back, i have booted in safe mode and tried that way, i have also used StartUp Mechanic to disable everything that i do not recognize in hopes that something is blocking the start menu from loading. I am okay with a computer, but the simpler the instructions the better.

It says I am not the administrator. I don't have any idea why it is saying this. I have tried to do things like this before and always get the same answer.
View 6 Replies View Relatedmy work colleagues is having trouble with a slow-running computer i thought I'd look at her startup options and make sure there isn't something running that doesn't need to be. I ran msconfig and looked at what she had going at startup, but only the necessary items were checked there. So I took a look at the services panel, using a list from blackviper.com to make sure her computer's settings matched up with those recommendation. However, one of the services listed isn't on the blackviper.com list: Winkcpw. Nor did I get any hits for the name of the service on either Google or using Yahoo search. I'm wondering if anyone here knows what the program is and whether it should be running at all.

However, when I open My Computer on PC1 the Z: drive isn't in the list. Interestingly, if I open a DOS window on PC1 and change directories to the Z: drive, the mapped folder on PC2 is accessible. DIR /P for example displays the directory.Why isn't the Z: drive showing up in My Computer?

Ever since, IE 6 is no longer funtional. When I try to do a System restore, I get error message "ierutil.dll file is missing...re-installing will fix this problem". I cannot access "Help and Support" due to this file being missing. In addition, the 'Backup' option is missing from System Tools. I am running Windows XP with SP2 and am currently using Mozilla Firefox as a web-browser. Has anyone experienced this and know how to re-install iertutil.dll? View 14 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to start it up, I get an error (before the XP logo and the progress bar) that says that Windows cannot find certain files. I have tried safe mode, last known good configuration, etc. Nothing works.I tried booting from a KNOPPIX Linux Live CD, but for some reason it refuses to boot.I have Win XP Home (preinstalled) on this computer, but it also has a recovery partition (which will erase all my files if I use it - this is a last resort only) and a Win XP Pro upgrade CD.
First of all, how can I get KNOPPIX to run correctly? If I can get it to work, I can get the files I need and do a wipe and reinstall of Windows (which would fix a LOT of things).
Second, if that doesn't work, can I use the XP Pro upgrade CD to get the system back up enough to get the files?Third, if that fails, how can I partition my hard drive and install Linux, then access the Windows partition and save the files I want?
"missing NTLDR" viruses an my PC with XP Home. I am trying to do a clean install of XP Pro. I boot to the CD and it starts checking the configurations. I then get a screen asking for me to insert the CD in Drive "A". It won't read the CD no matter what I do. The PC only has the DVD/CD-rom and the hard drive.
