Computer Freezes / Attacked By Viruses / Missing Desktop Icons?
Sep 22, 2008my computer got infected with a malware or two. I honestly forgot what they're called but one of them was called rogue. something. A few of my desktop icons got deleted and sometimes I wouldnt c the start button or the computer wouldnt detect the main harddrive and various other errors. It also gave me fake anti virus ads I installed many different programs to remove it but none were successful, except Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.Now, my computer has been so unstable that I dont even feel like it's a new computer.

Dec 18, 2005After a malware infection (Inet2 and SpySherriff - which took over my desktop) I cleaned up some files, directories and registry-entries. Now, after the cleaning activity as explained by techguys, everything seems going well. All programs do start without problems (through the start-menu or the quick-start taskbar), but there is a small drawback: my desktop screen shows only my wallpaper, there are no icons. The right-mouse click on the desktop also doesn't work (although the desktopsettings are accessible through the control panel). I use WinXP pro. what is wrong and how do I get the icons back on the screen?

Sep 15, 2005Several icons that should be showing in systray aren't there. The programs are running & I have checked any box that says to display the icon. Three missing icons are: volume control, APC power backup status, & MS new spyware blocker. Two network connections icons are showing properly. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

Dec 11, 2008I noticed the other day that a couple of my tray icons are missing. I know I didn't uninstall anything or set them to not show. they just stopped appearing. To my knowledge, the ones that I noticed as missing (LogMeIn and DVD43) don't even have settings to hide them. When I go to task manager I can see that they are running in Processes, but there is no way for me to interact with them.

Jul 6, 2005I have found fix for the missing XP tray Icons on the home page of Tech-pro.net. The solution worked for me just fine as suggested on the web site which was to disable the UPNP using the provided reg file.But that got me thinking that it must be something that does this other then UPNP and I found the actual culprit. This is really dumb but it worked. Open My Network Placers and click on the "Hide icon for networked UPnP devices" located in the Network Task area of this window. If there is "Show icons for networked devices" in this location instead then the problem must be someplace else.

May 10, 2007I just turned my computer on today and my taskbar is magically gone. I can't right click where it is on the screen and I know it's not hidden etc (i'm not a moron). I can hit the windows key to bring upt he start menu but I cannot see the bar, clock, etc on my screen. I've tried a bunch of things and nothing has worked. I thought it was just that explorer.exe wasnt on, but my icons and such are working just fine, and when I control+alt+delete it shows explorer.exe as running.

Jan 11, 2006I have perplexing problem. Dell Dimension 4600 running Windows Xp Home. SP2. I have no icons on desktop and cannot load any background wallpaper through display properties. They background choices are listed but cannot be selected. I do have icons when running in safe mode. This system was infected with several viruses and lots of spy/adware. Had alot of trouble removing Startpagedu.dll and New Poly Win32 trojans. I am wondering if I missed something. Ran Spybot, Adaware, Webroot Spysweeper, eScan Antivirus Toolkit, Norton Antivirus, Hijack This, CWShredder, AboutBuster, Ewido Security Suite. All of these were ran in safe mode. I also deleted all tempfiles and made sure no rogue services were running. I am lost about what to do next.

Sep 20, 2006Today, I noticed two icons that are normally in the system tray are gone. They are the blue battery icon for the laptop battery status, and the Windows volume control speaker icon. Yes,I opened the "Power Options" icon in Windows Control Panel, and under "Power Options Properties/Advanced, the checkbox "Always show icon on the taskbar" is checked. Yet the icon will not show. Same thing for the Windows volume control icon, in Control Panel, I clicked "Sounds and Audio Devices", and on the "Volume" tab, I have checked "Place volume icon in the taskbar", but there's no icon. They were both there yesterday, and I didn't knowlingly change any settings.

Jul 6, 2005A friend gave me his daughters computer to fix and I've been working on it for a week now and I'm more or less stuck on what to do, although I have a pretty good idea what the problem is. This system is a Dell with XP Home SP1,Initially it was infested with virus's, trojans, adware and spyware. you know the usual teenage stuff and the symptoms were pretty much the same as now after selecting the user name from the list you'd get a black screen (no matter who logged on) and that would be it. I could bring up the task manager with Alt-Ctrl-Del and run programs from there and so I was able to Run the add / remove programs applet and get rid of the Norton Anti-Virus and install NOD32, updated and cleaned the hard drive.(internet connectivity works find) Install the latest Adaware 1.06 and do a full system scan, remove all the various garbage.

A couple months ago I noticed that when in Windows Explorer viewing files, the icons that used to be pictures are now a generic icon. Jul 5, 2006I am in desperate need of help. My Windows Xp Home Edition Sp2 (up to date) will not boot. I turn it on, and it comes up to the welcome screen, the screen looks as if it is still loading, but i click on my account (1 of 5 others) to login, and suddenly the other icons disappear and the hour-glass appears as if loading, but it just stays that way. I was able to logon prior to this and the characteristics were similar, some of my desktop icons were missing and my norton internet security came up with an error report saying something about not being able to properly run along with my mouse driver and my free ram xp pro came up with errors. I shrugged it off and went to look at the event viewer, but before i could start it up the blue error screen came up. I didn't copy down the entire code (figuring it would come up

Mar 13, 2005I just recently set up my grandmother's new computer. XP Home came preinstalled of course, and I just installed SBC Yahoo DSL. McAfee also came preinstalled however i had to update it. I also had to disable it in order to install the DSL. Shortly after i finished installing the DSL, I got an error message saying Windows had to shutdown to prevent further damage to itself. Quick fix log off and on again icons reappear where they should. I am told that this disappearing activity is due to a Windows XP "BUG". What a problem! Any ideas for a secure, lasting fix out there? After the spyware and antivirus software installation, the computer star-up time is now really SLOW too. The software launches seems to be in conflict with each other, or something. Aug 16, 2009I am running windows xp service pack 3 on an hp desktop and i have recently installed a new wireless card. The network that I am trying to connect to can only be accessed through the use of windows wireless manager. The problem that i am having is that the network icons (both wireless and wired) are missing from the system tray. This wouldnt normally bother me, but one of the steps for connecting requires you to click a bubble that pops up from the wireless network icon. However, no icon = no bubble. I can access my available networks from the network connections folder, but i need those icons in order to finish setup. I have checked the boxes to display the icons in the system tray and I have unchecked the hide unused icons box. I cannot find any solutions online.

Aug 6, 2009First the customer told me that all his desktop icons disappeared. I thought maybe he accidentally hid them. He also says that when he goes to google and searches for something, when he clicks on the search results, he is directed somewhere else. Ok, so we know his browser is being hi-jacked. But this I didn't expect. Look at the screen shot below when I remoted into his PC. No icons, no start button. Customer has XP Home Edition. Right-clicking on the desktop does absolutely nothing. I can bring up the task manager and select New Task, but I cannot run explorer.exe. I just get a permissions error. I was able to install Malwarebyte's, but after scanning for 8 seconds, the program just closes. Now I am trying an online scan to see if that works. I can't access My Computer at all. I really can't even run most programs. After Malwarebyte's closes, I cannot open it again. Not even by typing the exact path in the New Task window. I can open IE, but it won't let me access his hard drive or anything. I just keep getting an error about permissions. Obviously not all his permissions are gone since I am able to install software. But his PC is definitely in bad shape. Unfortunately he lives in CA, and I live in NJ, so I have to do this all remotely.

Jan 24, 2006Was using computer all day yesterday and all was well, but when I stepped away for only a moment I returned to find that ALL my icons are gone and my display picture was reset to blue. I have cleaned the computer to see if I had picked up a virus/worm but all is well or is now. But the problem is.....I cannot get my desktop to accept any shortcuts and it won't allow me to pick a desktop picture. I can access all of my programs/files etc. through my start menu but when I try to create a shortcut it won't. Don't know what to do from here, it seems like it must be just an easy fix but darn if I can figure out what that fix would be.
