My wife brought home a computer from work that was no longer needed. Everything started normally, ran well, but then after updating windows the log on screen appears and now needs a password. Any ideas?
View 3 Repliesi get this error when i tried to open up my computer, first the windows xp loading screen works fine, then after that the screen just goes black and stays like that forever. this happened when i tried to uninstall a USB Bluetooth driver and it was requested to restart my pc so i did, and after that restart i cant get in no more, the screen just goes black after the windows xp load screen. im wondering how can i fix this problem? please help me guys... thank you.. and o yeah one more thing.. when i tried it on safe mode it went to the welcome screen but after that when i try to move my cursor i didnt move at all then i restart my pc again and the whole thing happens once more
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just installed a linksys wireless router onto my desktop computer to add a wireless laptop and for some reason, when the User Logon screen comes up. The hand cursor never becomes a cursor for me to type in passowords to user accounts. I went into safe mode and then into control panel and deleted the passwords for each user acct and now I can get into the accounts but how can I add the passwords again and be able to type them in. We have 3 user accounts on this pc and would like to have them password protected.

Only then can I regain control of Chrome and the computer. I've tried all the usual antispy tools but nothing finds what is causing this. I do have a wireless logitech keyboard and mouse.

I tried to do a restore but when it gets to the point of restart the system won't shut down and the restore fails. I have McAfee installed and have scanned three times with no problems found.
View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently XP Pro has been taking ages to boot up. The system post screens come up and the windows loading bar shows no problem but then before the windows welcome screen appears followed by the desktop i get a black screen for approx 30 - 60 seconds.Once the desktop has finally loaded the pc works absolutely as normal I have not installed any new hardware or software recently.I cannot hear any drive activity during the black screen
First i tried to boot from disk and then it told me that i dont even have a hard drive installed. I fixed this problem by pressing F6 when my windows cd was booting up and now it loads some RAID drivers off from a floppy disk i made up so that the HDD is there.
Just as some other posts have mentioned, i did not try the recovery console and went straight into setting up windows. When it asks me to choose a partition. I selected the one that i created when i built my computer (the one i have very valuable files on) and from there it gives me the "blue screen of death" or so my friend used to call it...the one that says the computer has been shut down to prevent damage to my computer.
Any ideas?
Also, with no other ideas i went into the recovery console... it asks something around "on what volume do you want to recover"...so i press the number 1 which is drive C then from there goes to the blue screen again.
Another thought i ran across is that the disk i am trying to use is a windows xp home and i set up my computer with xp pro....i seem to have lost the disk!!! Im hoping that's not the reason for the blue screen.

every time i finish playing a game and exit out of it to return to windows. all i get is a black screen with my mouse curser, everything is still there i just carnt see anything. to fix this everytime i just push the windows button on the universal remote to media center, it starts up i exit out of it then everything is normal. just a little anoying having to do this after every game i play.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer was having some issues so I manually re-installed windows media center edition on my Dell 9300 laptop using the disks Dell provides ( run on sentence). Formatted and re-intalled everything went great. Added all software-everything great. However during the install it asked where to load the new operating system there were 3 or 4 places to load, screen said to load to biggest partition. I did. Why are there so many partitions and are they needed? Do they take up space? Also now when the system reboots a black screen shows up and says which operating system do you want to load, they are both the same I leave it at the top one and windows loads with no problems. How do I either get rid of this bogus operating system or diable this page from coming up?

Whenever this happens, i restart it and it asks me to choose Safe Mode, Safe Mode with command prompts, start window normally,etc. I choose start window normally . I have two machines both running XP Pro installed from the same disk and kept completely current by Microsoft. One displays the screen on every bootup and one never displays it. To be clear, I'm not talking about the greeting screen that can be turned on/off in the user account. The screen I mean is the one with the blue background and a simple login box asking for a password. Actually, you don't even need a password. If you click "OK" or press "enter" the screen disappears to be replaced by a desktop. Thanks in advance.

It has a single account named Owner that he clicks on which usually allows him to log-on, he never had a password. He clicks the icon, it appears to start logging on then suddendly it will say logging off, saving settings, then returns us back to the main log-on screen.I tried to start in safe mode by pressing F8 while the computer is intially turning on, but all the labtop does is make this loud beeping noise and starts up normally. No screen appears for me to select safe mode or anything.

While she is using it, eventually a blue screen appears, which is the precursor to it restarting suddenly. It happens so fast that we cannot read what the blue screen says. I'm in a third world country with no computer help at all...Barely a connection at time.That being said.3 times now when I boot up the computer runs through it's cycles, goes to the Windows XP page, and then absolutely nothing. Just a blank screen.
The same happens even when trying to go to safe-mode or debug. I'm lucky it's even working now.I've saved all my information.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI have tried looking for a solution on the web for this and I can’t seem to find anything that quite matches my problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 2500 which is a few years old. I have not recently installed anything new onto it or added new hardware or anything, but the other day i switched it on and it appeard to be starting up fine. The Dell screen comes up, the Windows startup splash screen appears then the screen goes blank. The laptop continues to load properly (i think) as you can hear the start up music and everything loading up, but the screen is blank, (tho the colour of it down change to a slight lighter shade of black!).
I have tried outputting to a different monitor - which does exactly the same as the laptop screen - displaying the start-up stuff then blank screen before the login bit. When i start up the laptop in safe mode and VGA mode it works fine. I have tried changin the resolution in these modes to a lower one 600x800 (the refesh rate is set to 60) but this does not solve the problem. I have installed all recommended XP updates, scanned for viruses and spyware but there’s nothing there, tried to use the troubleshooting tools in Help and Support but not really sure what imdoing and it says everything is fine! sort of hardware failure with my graphics card maybe?! Dont know much about that sort of thing.
A few days ago I tried to update my families pc to SP2 so I could get all the updates etc. It seemed to install alright, but then when starting up it gave me some drwatson.exe error which ended up freezing the pc. So I did what I thought was safest at the time and that was to go back to a restore point and then maybe try reinstall SP2. BUT, after restoring, windows suddenly showed the password/log on screens. I now can't log on as Administrator OR Guest. Nothing works. I've tried EVERY possible password that I could have used in the passed, but nothing works. So now I can't get into the pc at all. I've tried booting up in safe mode and logging in as administrator with a blank password, but that doesn't even work. I've read a lot about it online, and it seems the only solution would be to reinstall XP. But would that work as a format and erase some of my files and/or settings? Or would it just be like an upgrade?

Sometimes, on restarting, I would get the "Serious error" pop-up, which I always sent, and always got different results. Sometimes it would say it was an unknown driver error, sometimes an anti-virus error, once a RAM error. I had just upgraded the RAM when this started, so I ran the M$ testing tool several times, no errors. I also removed the new RAM, which didn't solve the problem, and put it back in

I have got a HP Laptop that is about a year a half old, its top of the range. I had my laptop in Hibernate mode the other night and the next afternoon I went to turn it back on there was a blank screen for a long time, all the lights on the laptop were on but nothing on the screen. I turned the laptop off and then back on again. and BOOM! The blue screen of death!The computer starts up with the HP logo and then it pops up a screen saying that a previous attempt to start up had failed and it gave me options to start up in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, start with the previous successfull start config, and normal start up. When i click ANY of these the windows logo pops up for about 3 seconds and then the blue screen, which appears for long enough for me to read 3 letters or numbers at a time. Then the computer restarts and we go through the whole process again. This is what I have done in the hope of fixing it.
I used my HP retore disks and it loaded disk 1 of 3 and it didnt ask for the other 2 disks which i thought was odd. But that made no differeance still the same start up process as explained above.The blue screen made mention of chkdsk and i read about some poeple on the net doing a chkdsk and it fixing similar problems. So i read that i needed a xp install disk to access the windows recovery console and type r. BUT i have a OEM installation so i have NO disks! So what i did was i got the XP Pro disk i have from a few years ago that i had on Desktop. BUT when it goes into recovery console it can not find any hard drives!
#Ive tried spinrite and it reads all the hard drives in the computer so i know that they are still there.
#I've tried to find some chkdsk bootable cd's but most are either floppy only or they only for FAT16/32 file systems, my file system is NTFS.I'am convinced from the research done that if I can run CHKDSK on the computer then it should fix the file error and then i can at least back up my data and then do a full format and start fresh again. But I have to be able to get this computer running.I just tried the "Last Known Good Configuration" selection and it says that the system32/config/SYSTEM file is missing.I would welcome any help, as I have exhausted all options that I can see available to me. From what I can see, the biggest problem is that im running a OEM version of windows. But then again the recovery console couldnt find the hard drives, so i dont know.
I was having some problems with windows xp media centre 2005 on my dell dimension 9150 so i decided to do a repair, i put in the xp cd and booted from it at start up, then the blue screen appears and the process starts, i then get the choice to install windows or repair using the recovery console, i chose install windows and then pressed r for repair on the os that was already there.It now has gone to the installation off the os where it installs the files and finalizes the process, it is getting to the third option where it installs devices but it is getting about three quarters of the way and then the driver box pops up saying that microsoft does not athorize the use of the driver would you like to continue but the thing is i cant, my mouse will not move on the screen so i am unable to click continue.

I have been experiencing intermittent bootup problems with Windows XP. When this happens, the XP splash screen appears(blue line scrolling) and then monitor loses signal and reboot occurs. This can cycle several times, even if I choose the option of starting Windows with last known configuration that worked. It always eventually loads and reports that Windows experienced a serious problem.

When restring to an earlier date, a screen says that the E drive cannot be restored because it is either turned off or disabled.
