My computer has given me problems from day 1. Currently, it fails to recognize my E drive. When rebooting, a black screen appears that says "Secondary drive 1 not found." When restring to an earlier date, a screen says that the E drive cannot be restored because it is either turned off or disabled. The harddrive light which usaully flickers when the computer is working now stays on all the time.
View 3 RepliesI got a black screen, and the hard drive wouldn't boot. I took 3 old hard drives that I thought were still good, but after I formatted each one, I got a message that the hard drive was damaged . . . something else was wrong, like an improper connection . . .
finally, I hooked up a new Hitachi Hard Drive, and formatted it . . . and lo and behold I'm getting the same message.
It's possible the 3 older hard drives could have become damaged, but when the brand new Hitachi gives me the same message
During the process of setting of windows while reformatting my hard drive. The screen when black, when it came back it said that there was a problem and to keep from doing damage to your computer, windows was shutting down. It said to restart computer and that if the problem continued then the following steps should be followed.In bios disable the memory cache If you have new hardware disconnect the new hardware, uninstall drivers and programs. I tried several times to finish the reformatting but to no avail. I am using windows xp CD.

I�m not too sure what or how its happen but I turn my laptop on 2day after using late last night, powered it on and I�m not to sure if this has anything to do with what�s happened but I walked away and trip up on the plug for the laptop and when I turned around to login to XP it was black with the screen saying no operating system found with the hard drive making a funny clicking sound. It�s a Sony Vaio Model PCG-6N1L and its from the U.S.(and I'm in the UK atm )
View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen starting my computer, I have started getting a "Hard Drive Not Found" error on the black screen just as the pc starts booting up. I've not written down all the details, but I see the MAC address displayed and a cursor blinks just after the letters DHCP, there is something about "boot filename not received", then "Hard Drive not found" and then it defaults to the Windows boot screen and will boot up fine. The pc seems to run normal once up...but, I'm somewhat concerned about a "Hard Drive Not Found" error. It just doesn't sound good. I'm going to try to get more specifics as to what I'm seeing on the boot screens, but wondered if anyone here might have some suggestions as to what my issue is?
My pc specs should show in my signature. Also, I recently upgraded my graphics card, but that's the only hardware I've been playing with lately. Don't know if that would make any difference because I wasn't getting any trouble until now and that graphics card has been in about a week already.
First i tried to boot from disk and then it told me that i dont even have a hard drive installed. I fixed this problem by pressing F6 when my windows cd was booting up and now it loads some RAID drivers off from a floppy disk i made up so that the HDD is there.
Just as some other posts have mentioned, i did not try the recovery console and went straight into setting up windows. When it asks me to choose a partition. I selected the one that i created when i built my computer (the one i have very valuable files on) and from there it gives me the "blue screen of death" or so my friend used to call it...the one that says the computer has been shut down to prevent damage to my computer.
Any ideas?
Also, with no other ideas i went into the recovery console... it asks something around "on what volume do you want to recover"...so i press the number 1 which is drive C then from there goes to the blue screen again.
Another thought i ran across is that the disk i am trying to use is a windows xp home and i set up my computer with xp pro....i seem to have lost the disk!!! Im hoping that's not the reason for the blue screen.

I have windows xp professional sp2, I uninstalled Symantec Antivirus then rebooted computer. Went through bios load screen then came a black screen (no hard drive activity or nothing) and stays black with no hard drive activity or anything for about 5 minutes. After the 5 minutes I get the Windows XP loading screen then boots as normal.
Prior to me uninstalling symantec it went straight from bios screens to windows xp loading screen almost immediately. The reason I uninstalled antivirus was I wanted to try a different antivirus
i get this error when i tried to open up my computer, first the windows xp loading screen works fine, then after that the screen just goes black and stays like that forever. this happened when i tried to uninstall a USB Bluetooth driver and it was requested to restart my pc so i did, and after that restart i cant get in no more, the screen just goes black after the windows xp load screen. im wondering how can i fix this problem? please help me guys... thank you.. and o yeah one more thing.. when i tried it on safe mode it went to the welcome screen but after that when i try to move my cursor i didnt move at all then i restart my pc again and the whole thing happens once more
View 4 Replies View Relatedevery time i finish playing a game and exit out of it to return to windows. all i get is a black screen with my mouse curser, everything is still there i just carnt see anything. to fix this everytime i just push the windows button on the universal remote to media center, it starts up i exit out of it then everything is normal. just a little anoying having to do this after every game i play.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer was having some issues so I manually re-installed windows media center edition on my Dell 9300 laptop using the disks Dell provides ( run on sentence). Formatted and re-intalled everything went great. Added all software-everything great. However during the install it asked where to load the new operating system there were 3 or 4 places to load, screen said to load to biggest partition. I did. Why are there so many partitions and are they needed? Do they take up space? Also now when the system reboots a black screen shows up and says which operating system do you want to load, they are both the same I leave it at the top one and windows loads with no problems. How do I either get rid of this bogus operating system or diable this page from coming up?

Whenever this happens, i restart it and it asks me to choose Safe Mode, Safe Mode with command prompts, start window normally,etc. I choose start window normally . Sometimes, on restarting, I would get the "Serious error" pop-up, which I always sent, and always got different results. I am running XP Pro SP2 and today it stopped booting, when I turn my computer on it boots fine until it should display the windows logo where the screen is black and it does nothing. My computer has been working for 6 months or so since the last reformat. I tried to boot in to safe mode but it gets stuck on loading C:/windows/system32/config/system so I'm assuming that file is corrupt. After realising this I have decided to reformat but I would like to back up first so I downloaded 'damn small linux' but while in 'damn small linux' a lot of my files don't appear and if I try to copy files between my two partitions I get a read-only error message.

When it starts up, it loads the initial Gateway bootscreen, and then goes to a black screen for approximately 5-10 minutes. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a primary drive (maxtor) whice xp is running on and a second hard drive (maxtor also) which i have been using for some time for storing files. i had windows xp home and everything worked fine for a long while. recently since i upgraded to xp pro, the hard drive icon for the secondary drive disappears from my computer. i even tried saving stuff to the drive from ms word or something and it is not recognized. usually a restart will solve the problem, but after i let the computer run, (till like the next day) it will happen again. i dont know yet what event causes it to dissapear. i sometimes use standby, but i dont think that is consistent with the problem

Here is the problem and some background.
About a year ago, I had installed a second SATA hard drive, Seagate Baracuda 300GB, model ST3300831AS. This drive was plug and play into the motherboard and never had any issues. Before reformating the main C: drive, I moved all my valuable data on the SATA drive.
I then turned the PC off, removed the power and signal cables from the SATA drive. (I'm a novice, and didn't want to take any chances of erasing the SATA drive, while reformating the main C drive)
I was told I could take a hard drive from a windows 98 computer and the person is buying a new Windows xp so I can hook up the win 98 hard drive as a slave to the new computer with win xp so I can drop and drag or cut and past files that they want off the 98 hard drive put on their new computer. Now If their new computer with the win xp on it, if there is an ide cable going to the hard drive and nothing else then I can hook up the win 98 hard drive to the same ide cable as a slave and no problem.
However if the windows xp computer has the hard drive on the ide cable and also the cd-rom then is it ok just to hook up another ide cable to their mother board and hook the hard drive from the windows 98 computer on the end of that ide cable as the master? and by turning the computer off, and then hooking up the hard drive and then turning the computer back on it should reconize the windows 98 hard drive in my computer right away right?
If I would have to put the windows 98 hard drive in the new computer on a seperate ide cable is it ok to have it as master? cause the hard drive that is already in it would be master to but it would be on a different ide cable. I am hoping the new computer just has the hard drive on an ide cable by itself so I can just hook the other one up as a slave and get the files and be done with it. How ever if someone could give me a couple or three scenario's with ide cables and hooking this up I would be very much appreciatetive.
I am trying to install XP Pro. After I boot from the CD everything looks good until it's time to select which HD to install in. It won't recognize it, I've found out there are multiple problems with these new large HDs. People talk about the 137 gigs limit, upgrading the drivers via Floppy, even customizing an installation CD image with an 'OEM' folder below i386. I've tried many things but still can't have it recognized. This box doesn't come with a floppy and I don't have one. Why the freaking dependability on a floppy drive.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to have a go at this slipstreaming thing, since I cannot install Windows XP Pro (it's a retail version from my desktop pc, which I'm now getting rid of) on my Toshiba laptop - it won't recognize the hard drive. I know how to do it, but I don't know which files (SATA drivers) to include in it. The harddrive is new (didn't come with the laptop) and it's a Samsung HM120JI, but it seems to be compatible, since the recovery disk worked fine and I am now running Windows XP home edition.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm connecting a 30GB Travelstar Hard Drive via an external USB 2.0 case to my Thinkpad T40 with Windows XP (pro). Windows immediately recognized it. However, the hard drive does not show up under Windows Explorer. I can go into Device Manager, click on Disk Drives, and it does show the new drive there (along with my main hard drive, which is a 80 GB hard drive).
I cannot figure out how to make it show up in Windows Explorer with an Drive Letter assigned to it and thus, how to actually use it.
I have a laptop which after I purchased it and installed my own backup utility and created an image. I then started my windows xp home eddition with the cd and went to the section to redo the partitions. I deleted the partion for the recovery however after doing so it is not shown as unpartiton space. The system should have 80 gb hard drive however the statement above the partion says only 75gb is available to use. This is the same total as on the control panel / disc management. How can I get XP to recognize the entire hard drive space?

So i searched around a bit and it said my hd needed to be repartitioned so i said instead of that id go out and buy a new 500gig that was only 80 dollars. So i put the hd in and tried with this and it still hangs at teh same screen. For some reason i cannot get passed the "Setup is inspecting your computers hardwear configuration" screen. I then put in another CD of windows but the 64 bit version to try that one to see if it were the CD that were bad. And it went straight into the setup but then did not recognize my harddrive was there.

I bought a 2.5" SATA > USB enclosure/caddy and put my laptop HDD into the enclosure. When I plugged the enclosure into my spare PC using the power/USB Y cable, the enclosure powers up and the LED light comes on. I can also feel/hear the laptop HDD inside spinning. A message comes up on the PC saying "New hardware found; USB mass storage device".
I am running XP Pro on my computer. On another drive I have windows 7. My computer stopped booting to my XP drive all of a sudden, but it would let me boot to my Windows 7 drive. That lasted for about 3 days. Now I can't boot to either drive. When I start the computer it says there is no HDD. I tried to use the XP disk to repair, that didn't work., so I thought I'd do an XP install. But my hard drive doesn't show up all the time. Or it will show the HDD but upon trying to pick a partition to set up XP in, it then tell me there is no HDD. I get the blue screen of death, and have to manually force a shut down. Other times it tell me that the HDD is RAW, and it needs to be formatted. How can I get the HDD to format? Is there a way to do it through DOS. Sometimes I can't even get to the DOS prompt. The bootup section is corrupt. I need to repair it, but can't if the system doesn't see my HDD.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been using an USB enclosure successfully for some time with no problem. I upgraded to a Maxtor 100 gig in the same enclosure. When turned on it does the "plug and play" chimes and it shows up in the device manager as installed and working properly. But it is not shown in My Computer as a drive letter.
