View 7 Replies View RelatedI need to re-install XP pro because I have been having issues. I want to do it so I dont loose everything so I wanted to re-install from boot. I checked my settings to be sure I boot from cd first and it does. Well I get to the point where I can hit any key to boot from cd and the system then continues on to load from the harddrive. The cd never starts. I finally went and opened the cd from the drive itself. One of the choices then is to install XP but it mentions I would loose everything. The CD is Xp Pro full version dist with new systems. What am I doing wrong? Its been a long time since I re-installed.
View 14 Replies View RelatedMy Maxtor External Drive became corrupted and I needed to re-format the drive. Unfortunately, while Working in Windows XP I accidentally deleted the partition and the drive. Now I can't get Windows XP to recognize the Maxtor Drive. I tried re-booting the PC and plugging in the Maxtor USB Cable, but this did not work. The Maxtor Drive was my H: Drive. Can get Windows to recognize my Maxtor Drive? When I deleted the drive I was working in the "Computer Management" Screen. I navigated to this screen through the following path: Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHad customer mb go out, and after putting in a new mb, windows blue screens on boot (of course..was expecting it). Usually do a re-install when replacing a mb, but in this case, the customer has some software that cannot be replaced, so my question is...can you swap mb's in a system and not have to re-install and loose data? I can get to safe mode, so thats a step in the right direction, and the windows "Repair" unfortunately dosent work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try to repair Windows, everything goes fine up till this point, where half-way through the "Installing devices" stage... nothing seems to happen, no progress. The setup doesn't hang or freeze, it seems to be working just fine except that nothing happens, it does not complete this part, just sits there. I've even left it for an hour and even then no progress. However, if I commence a new setup, a new installation, this problem does not occur and the setup completes successfully.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a HP Pavilion laptop [dv5117ci] with factory load XP Pro SP2and factory restore discs. the system became corrupted by a failed Win update.
it had multiple files showing bad, so rather than chase them one at a time for an unknowable number of days, I decided to create a new directory and install fresh copy of WinXP Pro
That looked like it was going to work but after being up on the initial boot, wobbly, for about 45 minutes, something caused a freeze, and I was toasted after that. Same routine again: bootup, get error "Windows failed to start because the following file is missing or corrupt"
pop up saying that avg needed to update, it gave me the option to postpone it so i did; it told me it would be done when the computer was shut down.
today monday, i turned the computer on and all i had was a blue screen...the only way to access the computer was through the debugger mode, after several things I decided to repair my windows xp... and foolishly did not make backups of my data. During the XP repair the intallation was not completed when a new blue screened popped up saying a different message.BAD POOL CALLER and STOP: 0x000000c2 (0x00000007, 0x00000cd4,0x00340045,0xe1d4de7c)
I have XP with service pack 2 already installed. I tried installing sp3, following all the guidelines about being an administrator, closing all programs, disabling virus scanners and such, but consistently get this "internal error" as soon as the installation starts. The event viewer doesn't say anything useful, but according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949384/ this is a problem with a funky product id.
The solution says I should go to the System Properties to get the product id. Well an abstraction of that product id is 69831-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx. Then it tells me to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMWPAKey-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, and work with the fields in there. It predicts that there might be more than one key conforming to that format, and there is. It says I should pick the key that has the same ProductID as found in the System Properties, but they both have the same id and it isn't what I found in System Properties, it's 55285-xxx-xxxxxxx-xxxxx.I have one product id in System Properties, and another that appears in two keys in the registry.

I am running Win XP Mediaa Center Edition 2005 and have just received a message on the second boot up page saying:
Windows cannot load because the following file is missing or corrupt:
WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEM
You may attempt to recover or repair this file using the original Windows CD
I have just installed some anti virus software and during installation I got messages saying my registry had been damaged and i should log onto such-and-such site to download repair software and run it on my system. I am suspicious that if I do this I am exposing myself to total destruction. One of the messages has just popped up again and the site it directs me to is FixReg32.com.
View 2 Replies View RelatedProblems started was when i updated my Zone Alarm firewall, windows works absolutely fine no problems what so ever, then next time i reboot it does the same, this time problems are non-stop until about 10% then fine from there on in, then when it finishes repairing the drive it gets stuck at repairing unreadable security descriptions date stream.
It also said whilst recovering orphaned files insufficient disk space to recover lost files. It stopped for a while then carried on. After scan disk it restarted and wouldn't load windows, just got stuck on windows loading screen forever, eventually 15+ minutes i pressed reset as there was no disk activity.
I recently had a bad hard drive (It need the windows xp cd to boot) and saw that the problem was bad blocks. I decide to buy a new hard drive and use ghost to clone it. But, now i have the same problem with the new hard drive. After a while, i realize that obviously, if the disk was cloned, ONLY the information that can be copied was transfered to the other one.In conclusion, how can I resolve this issue without using system repair. the problem is that once i use this tool and then IE won't work. at last I had to format the drive.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed xp for the first time after replacing motherboard and CPU.I skipped setup because I didn't know what I was doing. Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? I am tired of using the disk every time I update something or install new program.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been casually looking for a new laptop for my Mom for her first computer. Now I am ready to get one, but just about the only choice is something pre-loaded with Vista. I have no experience with Vista and have heard more bad than good about it, therefore I think it would be easier to get her up and running if we're not both having to learn a new OS.
I upgraded my computer from ME to XP with few problems but wondered how difficult it would be to take a new laptop and go backwards. I know I'd most likely have to purchase a Full version of XP, but how much of a hassel is it to get all the drivers/XP versions of necessary pre-loaded software? Would a Vista compatible version of say Word work if I did this? Any other problems I haven't thought of?
I re-formated my sisters computer yesterday, and after installing it i had no internet. As i hadn't installed any drivers yet, i understood that. But after heading over to dell's site, downloading all of the drivers for her computer and then installing them, i STILL do not have any internet. I don't see any connections on the computer either, it's just blank!
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis follows on from a previous discussion that is now closed, except my problem is a little different. I have an ACER laptop and am trying to install Windows XP Home on a brand new hard drive, but shortly after the drivers start to download/install I get an error that says that "the file vga.sys is corrupted" and then I get kicked out of the install. I assumed it was a problem with the disc, so I tried 2 more and had the same problem. What can I do to get past this point?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have created a command file called Runinstall.cmd in C: I put these lines in Runinstall.cmd to call another command file (Install.cmd) in different location, the Runinstall.cmd can call the Install.cmd in different location , but some silly things occur.I use Install.cmd to install software programmes. As the installers or items are in the same directory as the Install.cmd, I can just specify the file names without specifying the path of the files in the Install.cmd.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI restored a partition with Drive Image and am getting this message. It's worked fine for over a year but now a problem. I might have marked the partition active or not, I'm not sure. Older versions of the partition don't work. I think the boot.ini is ok. I checked it and can't find a problem. I copied HAL.DLL to all of my drives under windows/system/32 to see if booting was going to another drive and a different error message would appear. The first time it booted to the first choice in the boot screen and after that gives the same missing or corrupted HAL.DLL I've downloaded stuff from Microsoft but thought Symantec doesn't have good tech support any more; not like PowerQuest or whatever their name was.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWindows XP Pro SP2. Was all the way updated, but I think the last update may have hosed me.When I turn on the PC, it fails to load successfully...eventually it comes up with an error that says that NTFS.sys is corrupt.I tried the last known good...didn't help.I can boot from the installation CD. If I go into the recovery console, it comes up to the c: prompt but it fails to read the directory if I run DIR. When I tried to copy the NTFS.sys from the installation CD, it doesn't allow it.I tried going through the install, but when I get to the point of installing it on the existing partition, it wanted to reformat rather than repairing the Windows installation...I would REALLY like to avoid reformatting the drive before I retrieve data if at all possible.

Got rid of it and all appeared well. So I turned on my computer yesterday morning, went to log on and was presented with a BSOD.Run the driver verifier against any new (or suspect) drivers. If that doesn't reveal the corrupting driver, try enabling special pool. Both of these features are intended to catch the corruption at an earlier point where the offending driver can be identified. If you need to use safe mode to rmeove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Iotions and then select Safe Mode.If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.

I have used this website several times in the past to find solutions to some of my problems. I have normally been able for find what I need, without asking for help. Not for this problem, though. So, I am one of your newest members to this really cool site. I donated $20 to support this valuable resource. All files that are downloaded are corrupted
I noticed that my AntiVirus was not up-to-date (I got the MS security warning that virus prot was not running). I tried the "Live Update" feature and it didn't work (Live update could not uncompress the list of available updates. The update list somehow got corrupted. You need to run LiveUpdate again to get a new update list. I just shrugged it off and figured I would fix it later. Then I realized that I could not download other stuff, like updates to SpyBot S&D,iTunes, Typhoon Rising, MS Office
I decided to run a defrag on my computer before going to bed one night. When i woke up the next day my computer continued to reboot itself. It would reach the windows logo screen and run that for a while then i would stall for a little bit and restart. I then would shut it off cause i didnt want to mess with it and it would continually boot itself up and start this process over again. I'm running Windows XP Pro with an Athlon XP processor. I have 2-120 gig hard drives on a RAID. I have tried to do a repair with the Windows XP disk but the disk doesn't recognize the version of Windows already on the drive like it would usually do.

Last time I tried to run IPCONFIG I received a message that said "IPCONFIG is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program"....Also when I open up the command prompt it says C:Documents and Settings Username.
