Pro SP3 Repair Asking For Asms

Apr 6, 2010

I upgraded from xp pro sp2 to sp3 and after that computer was very slow. So I repaired SP3 and during that process it started asking for 'asms' file. Even though the sp3 cd(which i burnt from a ISO image) had the asms folder it does seem to sense the cd. I am really stuck now because, even if I reboot my pc without the cd it goes to windows setup asks for 'asms' file. Even in safe mode it says windows setup cannot proceed in safe mode it reboots.Kindly help me on what can I do now so that either i can get thru with the 'asms' file or is there a way I can revert back to sp2 and do any possible recovery so that I can go into windows and backup my files.

Probably Seen It A Million Times Its Asms

Feb 13, 2007

I just completed my first computer build and everything went fine, until i had to install windows. I am using Windows XP with SP2 its an oem version, and i am getting the asms problem. The only problem is, i can't use the microsoft solution because of the fact that my keyboard and mouse are not functioning when the problem goes off. I can't figure out how to just start the installation over and i don't really know where i should go from here. I hear that getting a new cd drive may help, i'm using the ones from my old computer. I also hear to borrow a windows disk and use a different disk.

Pro Freezes On Installation - File 'ASMS' Is Needed

May 1, 2006

Have read many threads on this and other sites and tried everything suggested (except swap out CD drive - don't have a working older drive to try). This PC is at least 5-6 yrs old - has original Hitachi CD/DVD Drive (reader, not writer). Have unplugged ALL devices from back of computer. Just has (1)internal CD/DVD drive and (1) internal LS120 floppy drive left installed.Something happened to computer - Windows XP Pro would no longer run. Tried re-installing Windows XP Pro. using OEM CD with hologram. Attempted to do a repair install, instead of a fresh install - hoping to be able to keep all programs/devices intact.During installation, computer got stuck on: "The file 'asms' on Windows XP Pro Serv Pack1 CD is needed" Type the path where the file is located and click OK""Copy files from: Global RootDeviceCDRom0I386."The screen is locked, and I can not type or change anything. Can NOT change the path. Can not hit SHIFT F10 to get to a DOS prompt.

File 'asms' On Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD Is Needed

Nov 20, 2004

Trying to do a 'repair' re-install of Windows XP Home Edition. I get through the loading of files and into the first installation window of Windows XP (after the 1st restart) and then get the system windows asking for [B]'The File ASMS on Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 1 CD is needed. Type the path where the file is located and then click OK/B]'. The text in the path text box is 'GLOBALROOTDEVICECDROM0I386'. The ASMS file (directory) is in the 1st level directory of I386 on the CD. This is also a valid OEM CD with the Hologram. The system has two CD drives; one is a CD drive and the other is a DVD/CD RW drive. It seems it is not communicating with the drive properly.

Vga.sys Is Corrupted

Nov 13, 2008

This follows on from a previous discussion that is now closed, except my problem is a little different. I have an ACER laptop and am trying to install Windows XP Home on a brand new hard drive, but shortly after the drivers start to download/install I get an error that says that "the file vga.sys is corrupted" and then I get kicked out of the install. I assumed it was a problem with the disc, so I tried 2 more and had the same problem. What can I do to get past this point?

Some Cmd.exe Command Are Corrupted

Jan 13, 2008

I have created a command file called Runinstall.cmd in C: I put these lines in Runinstall.cmd to call another command file (Install.cmd) in different location, the Runinstall.cmd can call the Install.cmd in different location , but some silly things occur.I use Install.cmd to install software programmes. As the installers or items are in the same directory as the Install.cmd, I can just specify the file names without specifying the path of the files in the Install.cmd.

Hal.dll Missing Or Corrupted

Jul 5, 2005

I restored a partition with Drive Image and am getting this message. It's worked fine for over a year but now a problem. I might have marked the partition active or not, I'm not sure. Older versions of the partition don't work. I think the boot.ini is ok. I checked it and can't find a problem. I copied HAL.DLL to all of my drives under windows/system/32 to see if booting was going to another drive and a different error message would appear. The first time it booted to the first choice in the boot screen and after that gives the same missing or corrupted HAL.DLL I've downloaded stuff from Microsoft but thought Symantec doesn't have good tech support any more; not like PowerQuest or whatever their name was.

Corrupted Ntfs.sys?

Dec 16, 2006

Windows XP Pro SP2. Was all the way updated, but I think the last update may have hosed me.When I turn on the PC, it fails to load successfully...eventually it comes up with an error that says that NTFS.sys is corrupt.I tried the last known good...didn't help.I can boot from the installation CD. If I go into the recovery console, it comes up to the c: prompt but it fails to read the directory if I run DIR. When I tried to copy the NTFS.sys from the installation CD, it doesn't allow it.I tried going through the install, but when I get to the point of installing it on the existing partition, it wanted to reformat rather than repairing the Windows installation...I would REALLY like to avoid reformatting the drive before I retrieve data if at all possible.

Possible Corrupted Pagefile.sys?

Dec 31, 2008

I had a virus for the first time in absolute yonks the other week, no idea how it got there but it appeared to not have caused any damage. Got rid of it and all appeared well. So I turned on my computer yesterday morning, went to log on and was presented with a BSOD.Run the driver verifier against any new (or suspect) drivers. If that doesn't reveal the corrupting driver, try enabling special pool. Both of these features are intended to catch the corruption at an earlier point where the offending driver can be identified. If you need to use safe mode to rmeove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Iotions and then select Safe Mode.If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.

All Downloads Are Damaged/Corrupted

Oct 9, 2005

I have used this website several times in the past to find solutions to some of my problems. I have normally been able for find what I need, without asking for help. Not for this problem, though. So, I am one of your newest members to this really cool site. I donated $20 to support this valuable resource. All files that are downloaded are corrupted

I noticed that my AntiVirus was not up-to-date (I got the MS security warning that virus prot was not running). I tried the "Live Update" feature and it didn't work (Live update could not uncompress the list of available updates. The update list somehow got corrupted. You need to run LiveUpdate again to get a new update list. I just shrugged it off and figured I would fix it later. Then I realized that I could not download other stuff, like updates to SpyBot S&D,iTunes, Typhoon Rising, MS Office

Crashed Computer Corrupted

Apr 9, 2006

I decided to run a defrag on my computer before going to bed one night. When i woke up the next day my computer continued to reboot itself. It would reach the windows logo screen and run that for a while then i would stall for a little bit and restart. I then would shut it off cause i didnt want to mess with it and it would continually boot itself up and start this process over again. I'm running Windows XP Pro with an Athlon XP processor. I have 2-120 gig hard drives on a RAID. I have tried to do a repair with the Windows XP disk but the disk doesn't recognize the version of Windows already on the drive like it would usually do.

Did Not Boot Properly - MBR Corrupted?

Feb 6, 2008

how would you determine if you're MBR is corrupted? Here is the situation: The user boots up his Windows XP Pro SP2 machine, it does the normal POST and gets to the splash screen, however, it seems after that it will display a standard "Microsoft Apologizes but Windows did not boot properly... please select from one of the options..."

When this comes up, we attempt to launch windows into Safe Mode. It runs displays the some messages (more on the lines of what seems to be in the autoexec.bat file) but suddenly the PC reboots. It does the POST again and then the splash screen then bam same message as above. So we try the Last Known Good Configuration option but it does the same thing. Reboots the PC and gets to that screen.

Graphics Driver Corrupted

May 31, 2010

My friend was attempting to update his integrated graphics driver and managed to mess it up quite badly. The system boots, but the display just hangs on the XP disk checking screen. You can hear the XP startup sounds etc. so I think it's fully working otherwise. Since I can't see what's going on, I can't get to the restore manager etc. to roll back the system to before the driver change. Is there some way to restore the system from within the BIOS or from a command line that will skirt the messed up drivers? I wish I had a spec list or something to help out but I'm doing this over the phone and he doesn't know much about his system.

Corrupted My Music Folder

Dec 3, 2006

A few weeks ago I decided to move my music library to my external harddrive since my internal drive was nearly full. I stupidly moved my "My Music" folder, which is labled Julie's Music, to my F drive. At first, iTunes operated fine after I moved my music files, but later it could not find the iTunes library and would not open. I tried moving "Julie's Music" back to My Documents on the C Drive. But iTunes still cannot find iTunes library because it cannot find the My Music folder, even though it is there. I also cannot rename my Julie's Music folder back to My Music. It seems to me moving the folder corrupted it and now I can't open iTunes since it can't locate its library.
