I have finally succeeded to reinstall windows XP. I haven't erased my files, everything is there, but now I don't know how to recover the old settings. For example, I have a folder with all the datas of my previous
desktop. How can I recover it and put it in this new desktop? I have all my programs in the c:/programs, but they do not work, they are not anymore in the start/prorams. how can I recover all the previously saved settings and programs?
I had my system running XP but it is now running Windows 7 and for the reason I backed my files up to a portable Hard Drive formatted as FAT32. Now when I try to use the Files And Settings Transfer Wizard it doesn't seem to recognize the files and says that they are not there.
I found images in Windows Picture and Fax viewer that I want to delete. I can delete them one-by-one, but that takes time. I went to Disk Cleanup up and deleted all Temp and Temp internet files, but the images are still there. I checked Properties of the images for the file names, went to Win Explorer, but only found C:Documents and Settingsuser, there was no subfolder for Local Settings and, obviously nothing after that. I did a Search in Explorer, including hidden files and folders, for the file names and the searches resulted in nothing. I am back to deleting one-by-one, but my concern is, Where did everything from Local Settings on go to. BTW, I also run Skybot, Adaware and Norton virus weekly
When I started up it says Win.ini corrupt. Then it starts up as a new user losing track of Favorites and Start Menu and Desktop Icons, Display and Folder attributes. Under Documents and Settings it has added Dave.U5R2D5 in addition to Dave which still has all the information. I tried switching the 2 Filenames to get back to what it used to be but gave an error message and didn't do it and started another new file.Is there some way to use the old Dave file?
I'm having a major problem with XP Home Edition. When I start my computer, I get the Loading Settings screen, which automatically switches to the Saving Settings screen and then goes back to Loading Settings, Saving Settings, etc, etc, (the "Windows XP Startup" and "Windows XP Shutdown" sounds repeat themselves one right after the other). By the way, I have the XP tweak that skips the Welcome and log on screens at startup since I'm the only person that uses the computer. I've tried Debugging, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Restore To Last Working Settings and a few others, but nothing is working. I ran Spybot just before shutting down the computer the last time it worked and got the "Congratulations! Your system contains no spyware" message. When I restarted the computer, I started having this problem. I also have Norton Anti Virus 2004 and did a Live Update (manually) a few hours before this started happening.
Files and settings wizard does not replace files and settings after re installation. of XP. After several tries I got a copy of FASTconv, a command line program, to extract the files. It has been a long time since I used a command line and the command is complex. I have set the command follows........ fastconv /V /S:source store /D:destination store /T:temp store /I left out the /I switch so all files in the Dir source store would be extracted. Same thing happens when I put in /I switch.I named the Dir. source store, destination store and temp store. When I run it I get instructions on usage and a command prompt What am I missing?
Yesterday whilst on a perfectly safe website i was alerted to a virus which advised it was a downloader and could not be removed, i followed the instructions and assumed it is quarantined, when i tried to restart the laptop this morning it wouldn't boot up, i eventally opted for a full recovery, however, the recovery reaches the end of stage 1 an and shuts down, i have tried this 5 times with the end result. I think i have been conned that my computer wasn't warning of a virus, it was abogus warning and by following the instruction i downloaded a devastating virus that has somehow effected my hard drive.
WinXP-Home; one hard drive with multiple partitions. My email client (The Bat!) crashed. When I reboot, I cannot access my L: drive (the mail directory). However, Partition Magic 8.01's PartitionInfo report no error on L: drive -- "No partition errors detected".Windows Explorer reports that the L: drive is not formatted. However, PartitionInfo shows it is formatted for FAT32.Is there any way I can fix the problem and get back into my L: drive? If this is not the correct forum, please advise which forum or newsgroup I should pose this question.
When normally you install win xp sp2 an account of administrator and guest account is created automatically and so it so happened that I created another administrator and then deleted the other administrator which was created by default and unfortunately there were documents that I had created which were important, but since then I have never been able to locate them, how do I recover those documents.
I run xp and have a HP Pavilion 9600. I've never used stand by before, but I have a standby key on my keyboard that my 11 month old son convenantly hits everytime I am online. I've tried hitting return, space, esc, and so forth but nothing brings it out, and I have to do a cold shut down.
Hadn't been on the computer for a couple of days, when I did I saw that Norton had found 2 high risk viruses (I don't recall what they were). I selected to fix both of them and it seemed to work. I also noticed that I had about 10 My Computer folders open. It then told me to reboot the computer, which I did. When the computer restarted, it seemed to power up OK, it then said starting Windows, and it went to the log-in screen. (I have two log-ins, one for me and one for my wife). When I click on either one of the two log-ins, it automatically says saving settings and logging off, and then it goes right back to the two log-in selections. I have tried to log-in in Safe Mode, and every other option available to me, and I get the same outcome. I tried the Recovery Disk that came with the computer, and it would not boot from the CD drive, even when I changed the settings to boot from the CD Drive. It tried to star once and I hit R for a Standard Recovery and it seemed to start, then I got a BOOT: Memory overflow error..Please insert another disk and it just locked up. I rebooted and I could not get back to the recovery menu. It just sits there with a black screen with a blinking cursor and then I get the following error. Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter. And it does the same thing now every time I try it. Is there a way I can just get to normal DOS to try and recover my files?

I'm running windows xp 2005 sp2 As the free space in my %systemroot% was getting low, i decided to "move" my "my documents" folder to some drive that had enough space.. so i CREATED a folder that named "My Documents", say "e:My Documents" as the windows xp originally has) and put all my documents in that folder (that i created myself then ( i thought it would "just link" to that folder i opened properties of original my documents folder and gave the target as "e:my documents" and what xp did it just replaced my "my documents" folder that i had created with an empty "my documents" folder now i want to retrieve my all documents
Does anyone know how to recover files in widows XP The problem is i installed a new OS but i did'nt format the hard-drive In "Documents and Settings" Folder my files still exist but i cant seem to get access.
After a recent crash, my IBM ThinkPad's hard drive has completely accessible files, but doesn't boot.I bought an external hard drive enclosure to access the data, and this works great, with one exception-My personal user files were password-protected, and when I try to view them remotely, I recieve an error message saying "Access is Denied." I'm running Windows XP (an insecure system) so there has to be some way around this obstacle, right?
My fifteen yrs old son formatted a drive before he knew he'd have to save downloaded emails five thousnad's of them from Shaw hot mail to Outlook Express Now the woman he did this for after building the computer for her wants him to retrieve the emails for her.

I was wondering if it is possible to recover files that have been deleted, the recycle bin was emptied and there was files in there that I want back. So I was wondering if it is possible, and if so, how I go about it.I wasn't 100% sure where to post this, so seeing as I have Windows XP I thought this would be the best place to post it.

Not sure what has happened but I completely restored my system with a new install three weeks ago. Reinstalled all applications etc. 50% of my C Drive was free space. Three weeks later I get a message stating Im low on disc space and down to about 11% free. I am totally confused. Did not install new programs, pictures, music etc. Seems like it just happend to itself.
