Windows XP is having some hangups.When logging on, using either my account/profile or my wife's, it takes 5-8 minutes for the system to be ready to use. I imagine some of the problem is that there are too many programs operating, but I'm not sure how to alleviate that problem.Second, the hardware wizard keeps appearing, yet there is no new device connected to the computer.

View 4 Replies View RelatedMy g/f's computer is running XP and recently its commitment charge is currently triple what you would think is normal (700mb instead of 200mb) from what i can ascertain there are no extra processes running and cpu operation is running around 50% +40% -10%. The odd thing is, the computer has 512mb of ram but even when its sitting on 700mb its slow but not standstill slow.I have rebooted into safe mode and attempted using zone alarm suite, and webroot spysweeper; but both came up with errors requiring restart.I used the trendmicro housecall online scan in normal operation which did not find anything.

I'm trying to use "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" on my new computer to create the Wizard CD, but that program doesn't recognize my CD-RW/DVD drive (E. The dropdown list used to select the output device includes choices for only F, G, H, and I, my 8-in-1 media drives. How can I
get it to write to my CD on drive E?
My computer has been sluggish here lately. I have Ad-Aware, Asquared, Spyware Blaster, Spybot and just recently added AimFix and CCleaner (CCleaner seemed to clean a lot of junk out this morning). I try both and neither fix the problem, but they cleaned out all my cookies I noticed. I uninstalled Ashampoo, but keep XP Smoker.

Her CPU is a P4 2.66 GHz; with 1.25GB PC2700 RAM; 80G HDD (using 25%); The only hard ware installed is a printer, high speed modem, and ipod. I updated the drivers for those, and still no help. I also went through add/remove programs and got rid of those that she will never use, I did not remove any system critical programs, I'm an advanced user so I know what not to delete. I also went into the system tools and stopped some services for running auto on system boot. Like her Ipod, I set to manual, Printer (not spoolsvc) I set to manual, etc. I also ran a defrag on the HDD. Still, not much difference.

I have 2 IDE hard drives with my main drive as master with 3 partitions and my slave drive as cable select with 2 partitions. Any time I use explorer (not internet explorer, i'm talking about the normal windows OS) to access any of my volumes it takes a hell of a lot of time to show the files in the window. Usually, it takes about 30 seconds for the files to show, and during that 30 seconds, explorer.exe stops responding. What is my problem, and how do i fix it?? I've defragmented everything, but haven't screwed with my page file, if that has anything to do with the problem.

After she was able to close completely out of it I restarted the computer. It came on slowly and gave an error message, as I went to write it down, it blanked off (it said something about unable to open *some* local files and something about a *damaged* registry key. Then it opened to a desktop from like when we first got the computer, most my files are their but the shortcuts are gone off the desktop and mozilla asked if I wanted to import all my data from OE.

The worst part however, is media. Ever since then, any audio and video does not play properly on the computer - it just lags and plays very choppily.My computer has tested free of any spyware/adware/malware, as well as any viruses. Almost nothing is set to start up with my computer, and the registry is cleaned. As well, Opera is the only web browser I ever use, and I do not have my windows set to automatic update.

(1) Upgrade
(2) new reinstall

Recently installed StyleXP and applied one of those Vista Themes which changed the start menu and my desktop icons, however my pc started moving sluggish so I uninstalled it.
Everything went back to its original state except for my internet explorer 7 icon which remained as the icon from the theme (internet explorer 6 icon).
I tried uninstalling the reinstalling but this did not work

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe welcome screen refuses to show, even though i've selected "use the welcome screen" under user accounts. Instead I get the classic logon screen. Interesting to note, is that when "use the welcome screen" is selected, there is a black background to the logon, but when it's not selected (when classic mode is actually supposed to show), I get the logon with the default blue background. I've tried going into regedit and activated it manually, (used a 1 value), but I still get the classic logon screen.

Recently having replaced the mouse with a Logitech Wireless and not having had it start up, I read in the Logitech forum that a workaround would be to go to MSCONGIG and uncheck everything, re- start, then re-check the items I wanted to start up and re-start.
i then check all items in the startup tab and run a normal startup instead of selective.
I did this and now both Logitech and my Webshots program do not start at startup. Is there a workaround or possible change of permissions that I need to do to resolve?
This PC in the office, has Outlook Express installed & set up. Here's the thing - on the Inbox view it shows almost every email as having attachments, has the little paperclip icon next to the sender's name and all. However, on only three or four of those emails are the attachments available - on the rest that show attachments in the folder view, nothing is shown when opened, and the 'save attachments' option in the File menu is greyed out - not available. Basically, to OE the attachment simply does not exist beyond the icon in the folder view
View 15 Replies View RelatedIt has been about a week now and I have yet to solve a little problem with my taskbar.I've tried quite a few things to get tabs on the taskbar to show up when I open a folder or window, but all effort was in vain. I've looked in several other forums and felt that this place would provide the best answers/solutions. Reformatting is a last resort, and I want to avoid that. Can anyone help me?Problem: Nothing shows up on task bar when a folder/app/window is open. Only the Quicklaunch icons are there.e.g. Open firefox, nothing shows up on taskbar (I can right click taskbar choose different options etc - so it's not frozen) Opening Task manager shows firefox running on both the processes and application tab. So I can switch around that way. Alt+Tab also temporarily shows firefox and any other program/folder/window that is open as well. Minimizing the window causes it to disappear, so it looks like you haven't opened anything at all -but checking task manager shows the programs opened! Yet nothing shows up on the taskbar. (sort of funny since I ended up with literally 20+ windows of firefox on the alt-tab menu.
