View 4 RepliesWindows XP is having some hangups. When logging on, using either my account/profile or my wife's, it takes 5-8 minutes for the system to be ready to use. I imagine some of the problem is that there are too many programs operating, but I'm not sure how to alleviate that problem.Second, the hardware wizard keeps appearing, yet there is no new device connected to the computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter installing and running MSE I have been unable to update definitions either manually or automatically. At the same time I noticed that microsoft automatic updates are getting to around 28 percent and then stopping - not fully downloading or installing. I cannot get through to any microsoft websites now - but all other sites are fine. wuauserv and bits are missing from services also. Have I been sneakily virused by something which MSE hasnt picked up. I tried to run malicious software removal tool - it downloads alright but wont install - says its not a valid win32 application. I correctly downloaded the 32bit app. Can anyone shed some light on any of this. I dont want to rebuild again and again.

View 6 Replies View Relatedin my start menu -> all programs there is windows update and another called microsoft update. the icon for the windows update is the usual blue globe with the windows (4 colours emblem, its the one on your "start" button) and the icon for microsoft update is an image of a computer and an arrow pointing downwards.
in IE service pack 1, i clicked on the windows update on the tools tab on the menu bar. this loaded an empty page of the browser. this is the same when i click on windows update on the start menu -> all programs.
however when i click microsoft update, it takes me to the update page where i could download my service packs and 'express' and 'custom' installations. i traced the application which triggers the windows update and its from the system32 = wupdmgr.exe. i traced the application which triggers the microsoft update and its also from the system 32 = muweb.dll,LaunchMUSite. is the windows update now obsolete, unusable and just but a dead-end function. and is microsoft update now the site that replaces the what-used-to-be windows update?
I use a toshiba satellite R/15 series and for some reason I have been unable to install any of the Windows updates that were downloaded on my computer. The installer just tries to install for about 5 minutes, is unable to, and then just says it is unable to be successfully installed.

Recently having replaced the mouse with a Logitech Wireless and not having had it start up, I read in the Logitech forum that a workaround would be to go to MSCONGIG and uncheck everything, re- start, then re-check the items I wanted to start up and re-start.
i then check all items in the startup tab and run a normal startup instead of selective.
I did this and now both Logitech and my Webshots program do not start at startup. Is there a workaround or possible change of permissions that I need to do to resolve?
I have an old compaq computer with windows 2000 pro on it. Is there a way to prevent the password log on box from appearing at start up? This was an old computer that was used in a business and they all had passwords. It just comes up and says user is administrator and password is blank. If I hit enter it keeps going into windows. Thanks for any suggestions. I know how to do it in windows 98 and xp.
View 3 Replies View RelatedThe shortcut icons for frequently used programs that appear in the start menu below the Internet, Email, etc. shortcuts seem to have disappeared. I noticed it when I rebooted after having defragmented system files using PerfectDisk 8. I assumed the list just got cleared, but it seems no matter how many programs I open, no new shortcuts are ever created. The space just remains blank.I'm not sure if this has any bearing, but I'm also running WindowBlinds 6. I've had WindowBlinds for a long long time and have never run across this issue. Also disabling WB doesn't seem to fix anything.I'm sure the solution is something quite simple
View 10 Replies View Relatedknow that it has been a long time since service pack 3 was available for download on the automatic updates for windows, and it is just now that I've decided to update my SP2 to SP3. I've been looking for reviews all around the net and I've found mixed reviews on SP3. And it's got me thinking if I should update or not.
So here are my questions . Is SP3 safer than SP2? Is it faster than SP1 or SP2? (Like increased OS speed) Are there no bugs on SP3? (Like software incompatibilities, etc.) Anything I should be aware of before I install SP3? I've read in some blogs and other forums that you should uninstall some things on your computer for you to update to SP3 successfully.I also read that some users got lots of errors when they updated to SP3, is this true? Is SP3 MUCH BETTER than SP2?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm in the middle of setting a backup solution for my HDD on WindowsXP PC. I was going through the disk contents to remove unused files which are taking up space to make backups smaller and faster. I came across a folder WINDOWSSoftwareDistributionDownload which has taken some 4-5GB space. I was wondering if these files are the ones downloaded by MS Update and can they be safely deleted? I can save 4-5GB if those are removed.

Last week I thought I had a virus on my computer. Programs were freezing, the computer would restart out of nowhere, and I was getting messages stating referenced memory at "some number" could not be read or written or something like that. My friend called me up and I guess microsofts most recent update has been giving other people the same problems that my computer was and is still having.

So Microsoft has this new "Microsoft Update" thing you can install or whatever, which I guess is like Windows Update plus other updates for Microsoft products? I'm a bit leery of switching to that because it sounds like you end up letting Microsoft look at all the software on your computer, etc. Is that correct?
What's the benefit of it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedYesterday I got a notice from microsoft that a critical update was ready to install. I downloaded the update after closing all other open windows. After the installation was complete it restarted the computer after which my compter would not completly boot up. I had to boot in safe-mode and do a system restore to get it working right. Today I have the same notice so I went to the windows update page, and saw the update was there. I didn't download it because of what happened before. So I went to my installed update history and it said it was successfully updated. I looked at the update again and it said the update was 0 kbs. Can you tell me what happened and why now the up date says 0 kps to be installed?
