Computer Charge Triple Normal Operations - Webroot Sweeper
Aug 10, 2005
My g/f's computer is running XP and recently its commitment charge is currently triple what you would think is normal (700mb instead of 200mb) from what i can ascertain there are no extra processes running and cpu operation is running around 50% +40% -10%. The odd thing is, the computer has 512mb of ram but even when its sitting on 700mb its slow but not standstill slow.I have rebooted into safe mode and attempted using zone alarm suite, and webroot spysweeper; but both came up with errors requiring restart.I used the trendmicro housecall online scan in normal operation which did not find anything.

I have just loaded Norton Anti virus and Spy sweeper on my daughters laptop and it now switches off at random times. When I rebooted I just got a black screen with a white cursor blinking at me in the top left corner.I switched it off again and when I rebooted I pushed F8 and got into windows but it switched off again after a few minutes. I have now managed to uninstall Norton and Spy sweeper and the computer is ok( 4 now!) I need to install Norton and spy sweeper as we want to get her computer up and running on the net.I have both running on my computer with no problems. Her operating system is windows XP SP2.

I have windows 2000. I turned it on and when I got to the desktop it was all weird. It has like three or four fuzzy split screens. I can get into safe mode and even ran the AVG to check for viruses. I didn't find any. I tried to get the computer to last known good configuration, but that didn't work

On the quick launch toolbar, it comes with the Show Desktop icon. I deleted this not thinking I would need it.I tried to remove the quick launch bar through the task bar options, and I looked in Windows XP setup to see if it was sitting there.

Windows XP is having some hangups. When logging on, using either my account/profile or my wife's, it takes 5-8 minutes for the system to be ready to use. I imagine some of the problem is that there are too many programs operating, but I'm not sure how to alleviate that problem.Second, the hardware wizard keeps appearing, yet there is no new device connected to the computer.

How long should it take to boot my computer? It seems slow to me, for a new computer (about 4 months old).Compaq Presario R3000 notebook, 256K, 80Gigs, P4 (I think), XP, using Norton Anti-Virus, wireless cable internet, sometimes using docking station sometimes not, peripherals are old HP printer/fax/copier/ scanner and occasonally wireless mouse.I'm not sure if I'm just being impatient or if I have some programs that are slowing down the booting process What is the average boot time?

Problems have been.#1.would only start in safe mode.#2.if try to start normal hangs up on logo screen.#3.tried to do chkdsk and restarted...after restart wouldnt even go in safe mode(hung up at system32/drivers/agp4440.sys)(also some other files were missing at other times).#4.Could not not access cd rom to burn files(tried to backup drivers and could only send to floppy, which worked ).#5. I erased 1 harddrive with system suite6 professional(only one because windows told me the 2nd one was not formatted)and now i am trying to install windows xp and at first had a hang up at setup on an ntfs file, retried and got "corrupted file sym_hi.sys message".found out online it could be do to bios settings or actual physical sdram memory problems,so i fiddled with bios setttings and got windows to install and restart now it has taken about an hour and a half to finish and finalize.my question is...does anyone know what all this means??is it an old piece of crap?,do the bios settings need changed?

For the life of me my cousin's computer will not run explorer. In normal mode, safe mode, etc it will not run. I can get a command prompt when I run it in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, but in either mode if I Ctrl+Alt+Delete and try and run a new task and type in Explorer, it says that it has encountered a problem and needs to close. Checking the event viewers seems show that most error seem to coming from the hard disk and unexplained application errors, unfortunely I cant cut and paste anything because I have no access to the explorer....any insight?

My friend did a windows recovery after he had a black screen when starting windows. Both IE and Firefox had slow connectivity yet I had him do a speedtest with speakeasy.net and it showed good speeds. He says the longer the computer is on, the slower is a surfing the internet. CPU usage is normal.
internet speeds:
2500kbps/400kbps
Could the recovery have messed with his computer networking drivers? He used a gateway recovery disk. His computer is either a gateway or dell computer.

I turn on my pc and it boots as normal and goes to a screen where I have my users shown. Once I click on any of them it starts to sign on but straightaway changes to logging off and returns to the 3 profile screen.
I can get into my desktop if I go through safe mode though

We have a HP Pavilion dv1000 laptop on Windows XP Pro that is in a crashing cycle of doom and despair. In normal boot it flashes a blue screen of death, but only for a flicker of a second, so you can't read what it's saying. then it reverts to the black screen that allows you to access the safe boot. we've tried the safe boot (it works) and reverting to old configurations, but we can't get the normal boot to work again.

Hadn't been on the computer for a couple of days, when I did I saw that Norton had found 2 high risk viruses (I don't recall what they were). I selected to fix both of them and it seemed to work. I also noticed that I had about 10 My Computer folders open. It then told me to reboot the computer, which I did. When the computer restarted, it seemed to power up OK, it then said starting Windows, and it went to the log-in screen. (I have two log-ins, one for me and one for my wife). When I click on either one of the two log-ins, it automatically says saving settings and logging off, and then it goes right back to the two log-in selections. I have tried to log-in in Safe Mode, and every other option available to me, and I get the same outcome. I tried the Recovery Disk that came with the computer, and it would not boot from the CD drive, even when I changed the settings to boot from the CD Drive. It tried to star once and I hit R for a Standard Recovery and it seemed to start, then I got a BOOT: Memory overflow error..Please insert another disk and it just locked up. I rebooted and I could not get back to the recovery menu. It just sits there with a black screen with a blinking cursor and then I get the following error. Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter. And it does the same thing now every time I try it. Is there a way I can just get to normal DOS to try and recover my files?
