Can't Get The Normal Boot To Work
Jun 29, 2008
We have a HP Pavilion dv1000 laptop on Windows XP Pro that is in a crashing cycle of doom and despair. In normal boot it flashes a blue screen of death, but only for a flicker of a second, so you can't read what it's saying. then it reverts to the black screen that allows you to access the safe boot. we've tried the safe boot (it works) and reverting to old configurations, but we can't get the normal boot to work again.

I have a machine running win xp home edition SP2 that will not load windows up unless I do it by way of safe mode. It goes to the black xp screen and hangs up there. I did a system restore to an earlier date in safe mode but when it resarted i got the same results. Is this a symtom of a bad CMOS battery? The system has been running good for 3 years and this just started today.

The integrated keyboard (PS/2) on my Inspiron 2650 notebook stopped working in the middle of normal operation. The power and standby keys work, along with the mouse, but no standard keys respond, even on powerup. XP says its working fine.

I tried System Restore a week ago, but it didn't work. It ran but at the end I got the error message that it didn't complete and couldn't restore to the earlier point. It displayed the red "X." I deleted all of the restore points and set the amount of store to the maximum and set a new restore point. Still it didn't complete. I also ran Malwarebytes - it couldn't find any issues.I tried it in Safe Mode and it worked - it set the new point and renamed three files - two of them were Norton files, the third I didn't recognize. I set a new point and again it DID NOT COMPLETE - I got the same error message!

Problems occured after last update from Microsoft and consistent blue screens which I was able to correct in Safe Mode. Seems Microsoft dumped part of SP2 in my ad-remove programs but now I'm back to SP1 although there may be a conflict? Now using Microsoft "how to troubleshoot missing network connections icons in....XP" gets me to step 5...registering the dlls. Two I was able to register...netcfgx.dll and netman.dll.

I changed my boot option using msconfig to safe mode. But I didn't realize I needed a local username/ password to login. So now I don't know a local username password and pressing F8 and specifying Normal mode still boots in safe mode.

How long should it take to boot my computer? It seems slow to me, for a new computer (about 4 months old).Compaq Presario R3000 notebook, 256K, 80Gigs, P4 (I think), XP, using Norton Anti-Virus, wireless cable internet, sometimes using docking station sometimes not, peripherals are old HP printer/fax/copier/ scanner and occasonally wireless mouse.I'm not sure if I'm just being impatient or if I have some programs that are slowing down the booting process What is the average boot time?

Problems have been.#1.would only start in safe mode.#2.if try to start normal hangs up on logo screen.#3.tried to do chkdsk and restarted...after restart wouldnt even go in safe mode(hung up at system32/drivers/agp4440.sys)(also some other files were missing at other times).#4.Could not not access cd rom to burn files(tried to backup drivers and could only send to floppy, which worked ).#5. I erased 1 harddrive with system suite6 professional(only one because windows told me the 2nd one was not formatted)and now i am trying to install windows xp and at first had a hang up at setup on an ntfs file, retried and got "corrupted file sym_hi.sys message".found out online it could be do to bios settings or actual physical sdram memory problems,so i fiddled with bios setttings and got windows to install and restart now it has taken about an hour and a half to finish and finalize.my question is...does anyone know what all this means??is it an old piece of crap?,do the bios settings need changed?

I am trying to clean up my hard-drive, and want to run my virus-scan program as well as ad-ware/spyware programs in the safe mode. My computer will bootup fine in normal mode, but will not bootup in any safe mode. It starts loading lines of sys files and stops at mup.sys pauses for about 3 seconds and reboots. It doesn't matter if I try safe mode, safe mode with network, or safe mode with command prompt. Any ideas how to get it to boot to safe mode? I have a new (P9MS)motherboard with a p4 2.8gig cpu 512 meg ram, GForce fx5200 video card, seagate 80 gig 7200 rpm drive.

Very simple problem; my Win XP computer will get up to the Windows XP loading page (the black page with the blue bar moving in the middle), it then gets stuck for about 2/3 minutes and just restarts time and time over again.I do NOT have a virus of any kind, I know this for sure as Safe Mode works and I took an antivirus scan - no virus at all, so I need some help here.

I am working on a Dell Optiplex GX270 that will not boot past the splash screen in normal mode, nor will it go into safe mode. I'm not getting any errors, just a very faint splash screen. So far I've tried (with no success):
1) changing power supplies
2) put in a new video card
3) put in a different hard drive with a fresh Windows XP install
4) different memory

Recently, I accidentally clicked on a few bad google links. Soon after, my computer started acting weirdly. I started receiving windows notices saying that my computer was infected with spyware. I could tell that these were fake and started scanning my computer with avast anti-virus. It was acting weirdly and then I saw that a window popped up called "vista anti-virus" i then googled this and found that this was a fake anti-virus that would install more viruses on my computer. So, I panicked and manually shut down my computer with the power button and booted into safe mode.

I am working on a Dell GX280 which had issues with its heatsink. Also, at the same time the machine continues to not boot up. It freezes at the Windows XP logo screen. It will not go any further. We think that when the fan started racing the user got worried, pulled the power cord and maybe did damage. However Im still working on fixing it. I can boot up into safe mode, I have disabled all non microsoft items in services and all items in start up and I continue to have the same problem, freezing at start up.

I originally had XP Pro when the problem first started. When booting, the normal boot screen will come up with the "compaq" logo and F1 for setup f10 for restore, and then normally proceeds to the windows xp pro screen with the scrolling bar at the bottom. Now on boot, this bar will stay scrolling acting like it is trying to boot and it takes literally anywhere from 6 hours to 3 days to start up. I used restore points and the same thing happened. When I start in safe mode, the normal safe mode multidisk prompt comes up and even that will stay on winsys32driversagp330.sys for the same amount of hours before it finally boots up. I also reinstalled my windows xp.

I went into MSCONFIG and checked the box to go into safe mode so i could run some virus scans and adware scans and stuff like that. Now when it gets to the desktop it has the window that says Loading Windows and then after like 2-3 min. it says password is incorrect and that i should retype it and becarefull of caps lock and stuff like that. The thing is don't have a password. It does this when i boot normally too but it lets me hit ok and hit Cancel without a password entered.
All of a sudden it tries logging me in automatically when I start up but the thing is i dont need to log in. So I try to go back into normal mode and Ican't. I hit F8 during startup and went to the Boot Normally option but it still does to safe mode. What do I do? How do I log on or how do I get rid of this password thing? One more thing, the window that tells me the password is wrong has an OK box but theres no mouse on the screen for me to click it and I can't use the keyboard to select it.

I have a dual boot linux/xp system.I was looking at partitions - just listing them - in linux, and now win xp won't come up in normal mode. It will come up in safe mode, however. Can you help me get my "normal mode" back? When the horizontal moving bar comes up in normal mode, it just goes on forever. I see the disk light go on for about 8 cycles of the bar. It usually runs 11 cycles before giving me the user selection screen. Now the disk light goes out after cycle 8, and the bar keeps going. I waited 32 cycles before giving up.

I can't seem to get my computer to boot. It gets to the part with the windows logo and loading bar, then a BSoD flashes and the PC reboots. The BSoD disappears too quickly for me to see the error message and I don't know how to set it so that it doesn't automatically reboot.I've tried the five options to load windows (the three safe mode options, last known good configuration and normally). The three safe mode options load like they normally do with that wall of text saying what they're loading but then just reboot. The other two options get to the windows logo part, then BSoD flashes and it reboots.I've tried booting from my XP disc, but both the new install and repair options get stuck on a message saying:

got a issue with my parents PC - they tried to install Service Pack 2 and it killed their PC. - i have tried uninstalling SP2 from the recovery console to no avail - it will not boot in safe mode or normal mode - saying that it has shut down the system because "winsrv" was not found - i want to do a complete reload anyway BUT i can not find the XP CD key that they bought - they thought it was not important and threw it out and the fact i cant get into windows at all means i cant use the magic jellybean key finder - is there a (free) keyfinder that can boot off a floppy or CD? cause i dont think my parents want to buy a 2nd copy of XP

my pc (XP) will not boot or close up clean. The only way I can boot is using safe mode. Is there a better way to fix boot problems without doing a complete sys recovery? The instructions for complete sys recovery is pretty vague it seems to me.

I am running an HP Pavilion a1624n with Win XP Media Center 2005, running on a wireless network with one other desktop and one laptop. I also use Firefox browser and have NAV 2007. I have had this PC for about two months and the first time or two that I tried System Restore, it worked OK, Now, (with System Restore turned ON),it has gone downhill and when I try to run it, it goes through the process but at the end I get the error message "your computer cannot be restored to 00/00/00. No changes have been made." It does not make the automatic 24 hour restore points, even though it does make restore points when new programs are installed and manual restore points can be made. It works fine in Safe Mode using the rstrui.exe command. This latest problem started yesterday.

I keep noticing that my floppy drive would activate when I'd go to log onto the computer or turn it off. I disabled the A drive and since then things are kind of going the way it was when I first bought this computer. I did manage to check the areas that were mentioned before. I found nothing that came close to what was mentioned to look for.Did I manage to contain this thing in the floppy? I still want it off of my computer.

All things were fine and I had XP pro and XP home installed and working on seperate drives. I have just reinstalled XP pro and now on booting, no option to choose either operating system appears. I have done some searching and have seen references to copying a boot file from the CD and placing it into the XP home operating system to fix this. The instructions were not that detailed and not directly related to having 2 XP installs. nearly all search results I have found related to Xp dual booting with Vista. I have been thinking of now copying ALL the files from the XP Home operating system into the new XP Pro and then reinstalling the XP Home system. Sigh. I cannot use the system repair/recovery option as I do not know the Admin password. where did I put that? Is there an easy fix to get the dual boot working again?

I have a dell PC with windows XP Media Center installed. I think that a virus damaged the boot sector in fact I cannot start my PC.
All I am able to get to is the BIOS or the diagnostics tool, F8 doesn't work, which means I cannot restart in safe mode or last known good configuration and if I use alt+F11, which is the option you have on Dell PC to reformat it in order to have everything the way it was at the time you bought it, it doesn't work.
A friend of mine told me to boot from the CD and then use the fixboot command, the problem is that DELL does not give OS CDs anymore and I honestly do not know what to do
