Ive been using WindowBlinds but when i booted this morning it wont start with windows and my theme changed to windows classic. i thought it was a problem with WindowBlinds but the problem still remained after a fresh reinstall. Even a system restore wont fix it. I have Tune-Up Utilities but Tune-up styler that cannot apply themes as well!started when i installed CounterSpy last night.

The Compaq is obvious and I can't mess that up, but I did on the other two.Last year, I decided I wanted a fresh puter, so I backed up all of my stuff onto the 2nd Dell [it's used just for the children and was not allowed online] and reformatted it. Now I want to put my stuff back onto my Compaq and reformat the children's.I wanted to check which Windows CD went with what Dell, so I went to look at the OEM numbers on each puter. Well, darn it, but they're both the same!! How do I figure out which Windows CD is supposed to go with which puter???? Each one is assigned one, right?One CD is like a purple/burgundy and says, "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 1" [the booklet that came with it says, "Version 2002"]. and the other CD is like a mauve/purple [close to the colour of this dude --> ] and says, "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 2" [the booklet that came with it says, "Version 2002"]. Not exactly sure how old the Dell's are, but the one the children use was hubby's - he gave it to me when he bought a new one for himself and then I gave it to them when he bought me the Compaq. He's had his new one for about 4 years.While looking through the CD's [I keep them all together in a box], I found a square paper with a pic of a blue CD on it and it says, "Your new computer does not require an operating system CD or drivers CD's. Instead, if you ever need to reinstall your software, use one of the following methods." and suggests either System Restore or PC Restore. What puter does THAT come with?Now, the childrens' puter has never had the Windows updates as it's not online, no Service Pack 2 or anything like that, so no Genuine Advantage should be on it, but it is? Their puter is only for games that we buy them: disks, CD's, and the online games that they like to play are played on either my or hubby's puters.

The reinstall worked fine but I cannot reinstall my Virgin Media Bradband service. Before the reinstall the bradband service was wrking fine..When I originall took out the bradband service it was through NTL. My cable modem states 'NTL' and the broadband disk has NTL' on it and I registered it tthough NTL. Now Virgin Media has bought up NTl annd I don't know if there is a compatibility prblem. View 1 Replies View RelatedThere are threads here about using the system restore to restore to a certain point, but I want to restore the entire machine completely using the cd that came with the computer. Basically we have a kids machine that wasn't protected, got a virus, and is totally hosed. Instead of spending time cleaning or fixing it, I'd rather just start over. But when I put the CD in, reboot, pick the system restore, the PC Angel screen comes up and then nothing happens. It just hangs on a black screen and doesn't go anywhere or do anything.

Got windows loaded and started doing the drivers.I got to the chipset driver they suggested and after it was done installing, my mouse no longer worked and I had to use the touchpad. Looking at the Device Manager, it looks like some of my usb hubs are not active. I tried plugging the mouse into all the ports and nothing happened. It is just a dell standard mouse, so it shouldnt need any additional driver support.
computer started to run very poorly: lagging, freezing up, windows end task etc finnaly one day it would not go into desktop. would only give option to start in normal mode or safe mode. so i tried starting in both but would only restart into the same option screen.I decided it was best to format harddrive and reload windows. insert windows disk and proceeded to format partition and reinstall windows. it formats all that way to 90 % and then states cannot format partition further, harddrive problems and to trouble shoot manual. tried quick format and repair but still nothing.tried restarting without reinstall disk. says cant access OS of course!

I just corrected my problem by reinstalling the operating system from a CD for windows XP... The problem now is there is NO audio device, I cannot download some of programs from the CD's--it can't find the installation program.I have no sound and cannot donwload some of the programs that came with this computer.

It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. Then I did a Acronis recovery from a uniprocessor pc, and installed the correct mobo drivers. Still no issues. The I did a restart and a repair install to load the mobo sata and AHCI drivers. The pc restarts, but everytime I open a program from windows, for example Windows Explorer, or Software from the configuration screen, or Network Connections, I get a window with "Windows Installer", waiting for something to load. The version of windows on my old pc is sp3, after the repair install (I used a win xp slipstreamed with sp2), I see sp2 on my info screen of computer properties.

I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. Then after, I plugged them in and get no sound. In the device manager under the legacy audio cards and codecs, it says "This device is working properly", but through the control panel under sounds and audio devices, it says there are no audio devices detected.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.

So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. View 9 Replies View RelatedI bought a new desktop, 3 yrs ago, with Windows XP Pro installed from the factory, and of course it was an OEM version, as usual.The com has a MSI Intel 848P Neo Mother board which I have changed 2 times before on warranty. Now I had to change it again, due to one PCI slot was dead. So far everything was ok.But, to activate the OS was now a "plenty big" problem.
Somehow the technician managed to do it at his own place. Suddenly, I was going to download a plug-in program to my Microsoft Publisher 2002, of course validation was required. No problem - I had done that several times during the last 3 yeras and everything has been ok. But not this time. Validation failed, Microsoft announced. "The Office XP Pro has to be activated, start any Office program, go to Help activate product" - No problem, easy job.
I have been trying to clen up an old computer to give away. It is a 2002-vintage desktop with 512MB ram. I tried several times to reformat and reinstall xp, but I have only succeeded in removing the operating system and reformating both the hard drives. I have the OEM xp disk that came with it but I have tried 15 times to install xp and I can't. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
