when i bought my machine a couple of years ago i was not given the original windows xp home edition cd, instead they gave me 3 restore cd's, can i use those cd's to reinstall xp on my machine if something goes terribly wrong or do i need the original xp cd (which like i said i was not given)?

We have 3 puters here, all hooked up. One is a Compaq and the other two are Dell's. The Compaq is obvious and I can't mess that up, but I did on the other two.Last year, I decided I wanted a fresh puter, so I backed up all of my stuff onto the 2nd Dell [it's used just for the children and was not allowed online] and reformatted it. Now I want to put my stuff back onto my Compaq and reformat the children's.I wanted to check which Windows CD went with what Dell, so I went to look at the OEM numbers on each puter. Well, darn it, but they're both the same!! How do I figure out which Windows CD is supposed to go with which puter???? Each one is assigned one, right?One CD is like a purple/burgundy and says, "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 1" [the booklet that came with it says, "Version 2002"]. and the other CD is like a mauve/purple [close to the colour of this dude --> ] and says, "Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 2" [the booklet that came with it says, "Version 2002"]. Not exactly sure how old the Dell's are, but the one the children use was hubby's - he gave it to me when he bought a new one for himself and then I gave it to them when he bought me the Compaq. He's had his new one for about 4 years.While looking through the CD's [I keep them all together in a box], I found a square paper with a pic of a blue CD on it and it says, "Your new computer does not require an operating system CD or drivers CD's. Instead, if you ever need to reinstall your software, use one of the following methods." and suggests either System Restore or PC Restore. What puter does THAT come with?Now, the childrens' puter has never had the Windows updates as it's not online, no Service Pack 2 or anything like that, so no Genuine Advantage should be on it, but it is? Their puter is only for games that we buy them: disks, CD's, and the online games that they like to play are played on either my or hubby's puters.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThere are threads here about using the system restore to restore to a certain point, but I want to restore the entire machine completely using the cd that came with the computer. Basically we have a kids machine that wasn't protected, got a virus, and is totally hosed. Instead of spending time cleaning or fixing it, I'd rather just start over. But when I put the CD in, reboot, pick the system restore, the PC Angel screen comes up and then nothing happens. It just hangs on a black screen and doesn't go anywhere or do anything.

BUT it still save my Files. I have my orginial files in my Documents folders and In my Program Files It has all the Programs and files that go with that program? How do I zap everything back on my desktop screen so I don't have to go Download each files as new again??? And I how do i get my Internet Favorite Links and my Notepad with my saved information in it? Yes I did try the "Start" and then program files and none of the programs are there.. BUT yet it is in my Program Hard drive C: Program files. with the Program and all it's content?

I tried posting a question on another usenet newsgroup, but the answer of: click on install on the C:windowsinfpchealth.inf file - resulted in a search for the file dataspec.xml in the C:windowsinfi386 directory - Unfortunately, such directory does not exist on my C: drive. Furthermore, the "K:I386" directory of my Original Win XP Home CD does not contain any file named "dataspec.xm_ or .xml".And beyond that, I ordered a new Win XP SP2 CD, which just now arrived by mail - and there is no "K:I386" directory on that CD, nor does the CD apparently contain any file called "dataspec" (including dataspec.*).Another effort toward resolution occurred via another usenet post I read, which suggested opening the XP command line feature and executing a system status command, that displayed enabled services - I used that method, and switched the Help and Support service off and then on again. Such action did not in-fact enable the Help feature (including, of course restart), despite the indication that the Help and Support service was enabled. I am, and have been, running a purchased-CD version of Win XP Home, with a downloaded SP2 revision (I have not installed the new Win XP SP2 CD). Basically, I want to find out the means and methods for enabling my Win XP SP2 Help and Support feature, that apparently has been disabled or otherwise rendered inoperative.Is a reinstall of Win XP possible and the best choice? View 2 Replies View RelatedBecause of massive system porblems I have had t reinstall XP Pr with SP2. Before reinstalling XP I formmated the hard drives t give me a blank canvas to work. The reinstall worked fine but I cannot reinstall my Virgin Media Bradband service. Before the reinstall the bradband service was wrking fine..When I originall took out the bradband service it was through NTL. My cable modem states 'NTL' and the broadband disk has NTL' on it and I registered it tthough NTL. Now Virgin Media has bought up NTl annd I don't know if there is a compatibility prblem. Des somebdy else know?

I've already gone through all the steps to correct this (checking my DSL speed, anti-spyware scans, anti-virus scans, doing it all in safe mode, even reset my winsock.dll, etc.) but I'm still having problems with slow browsers. So now I think I'm faced with reinstalling Windows XP. My question is, should I do a format & reinstall, or is it better to reinstall Windows over my existing version? I have a Compaq Presario, and it comes with a Recovery CD.

I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. View 4 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. I have 8.5 gig disk space and turning off RESTORE , rebooting and creating a new restore point did not solve the problem--the message remained the same. Other than reinstalling XP I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not have a need to restore at the moment but I may need to in the future.

I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.

My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. The last several days I have been trying to use same and go back at least a month, but when I click on the arrow to to the left side of the restore box to go to the previous month it will not do same, nor will it go to the next month when I click on the right side arrow. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a toshiba laptop A105 sieries. I got a real nasty worm and could not get rid of it.I then stuck in the restore disc and did a complete erase of my harddrive. I am now trying to install the operating system off of the restore disc and I am not able to. Can someone please help me. I have went into the bios and set it to boot from dvd rom but then all it does is say recovering. 32 min later when it is done I try to boot from hard drive it ask me if I want to start windows normally. I select it and then nothing happens. I go back to bios and it says bood from hard drive but no go. If I go back into bios and have it boot from the recover disc it's the same thing all over. I don't know what I am doing and am a little confused no, really confused.

That virus shut off my system restore so that it could not be used and at that time I lost all my restore points. Now my computer seems fine except for the system is not creating any NEW restore points.
