File Suddenly Appeared
Aug 26, 2008
When I was about to use Norton Speed Disk to defrag, I noticed about 4 Gigs of "unmovable" file space allocated at the end of my C disk which was not there twenty four hours ago. The same space on the disk is listed as "Allocated" by Auslogics Defrag program. I defrag about every other day so I know it wasn't there before. The only major change I've made recently was to install SP3. But I also installed SP3 on my laptop and have noticed no such evidence of any file that huge listed as "unmovable" by Speed Disk or "Allocated" by Auslogics Defrag program like I have on my desktop. Another interesting thing is that when booted in Safe Mode that file does not appear in the disk usage graphics for those two defrag programs. And, in Safe Mode, my "free space" is increased by about 4 Gigs compared when booted normally. This huge file only appears when booted normally. Maybe you might think that with hard drives so huge these days I should just not worry about it. The computer seems to be running okay. But it bothers me to have this huge file, or whatever it is, just suddenly appear and take up so much space. Can anybody help me figure out what this is and get rid of it?

I checked my Recycle Bin for another reason and was startled to find that I had 195 BAK files in that bin that had not been there the day before. In fact I've never had BAK files appear in my Recycle Bin before. What happened and is it safe to delete them

Today I copied a large folder containing multiple Access databases, Excel workbooks, Word docs, etc. to a totally blank jump drive like I have done 100s of times before. But for the first time in my 'computer life', which started in 1980(!), a file appeared on it with the name EA DATA.SF. Googling the file told me that it was a system file and had something to do with Extended Attributes (whatever that is). But the file is protected; attempts to delete it, even using the command prompt and first removing all attributes (attrib -h -s -r ea*.sf) does not allow it to be deleted.
The Google search showed many cases like this, but none where there was a clear, easy way to delete the file. My questions are:What is this file for/what does it do? Why am I seeing it for the first time in 30 years? How can I delete it. or SHOULD I delete it?

One of my co-workers has been having this odd problem and I'm not sure what to make of it. On occasion, she goes to open an INDD (Adobe InDesign) file which is stored on our Windows 2003 server, and it opens as "read-only." She opens the file to make changes and can't because InDesign won't let her save any changes to the file. There's no apparent reason for this - she has full access to the file, the file's read-only bit has not been set, and there's plenty of space on the server. What she usually does to get around it is to "Save As." over the file she's just opened. That normally works. On occasion this doesn't work and she has to "Save As." to her desktop, then "Save As." back over the original. It's a pain for her at the very least.
What's odd is that I've checked the "open files" list on that Windows 2003 server when she gets the error. Her workstation suddenly opens a whole handful of zip files located on the same Windows 2003 server (some of our digital artwork comes in zip packages). They are opened in read mode only (READ, not READ-WRITE).When she does her "save as." and gets past the error, the read locks/handles on the zip files are closed also. The ZIP thing sounded suspicious to me and I scanned her computer (as well as the ZIPs) for viruses. Nothing came up. I have since even re-installed the entire operating system (Windows XP Professional, SP2) and still the same behavior. Now what's funny is it's only InDesign (CS). All of her other apps (even other Adobe apps) seem to behave correctly.
I've even inspected her network wiring and replaced her aged CAT5 with brand-new CAT5e, which needed to be done anyway. (we run gigabit). Net connections are solid (she's only 20-30 feet away from my office where all the office switches are located, which makes things easier). No one else in the office has the problem, and her computer (and software installed) is comparable to everyone else's, at least in her department.
Our software is too old to get support from Adobe (upgrading to CS3 isn't financially feasible at the moment but not sure an upgrade would help if I don't know what the problem is), and I've tried the official Adobe forums with no luck. I didn't get very far - most of the people on that forum aren't PC/NET tech experts, just Adobe users (for the most part). It seems that way, anyway.I guess I'm running out of ideas. What should I do to figure out what's going on here?

I screwed up and clicked something while trying to change desktop icon. Some message opened and said I'd have to allow something to happen so without thinking I stupidly allowed it. Now almost all my folders have this annoying blue task bar running down the left side of the folders. It's a royal pain, takes up space on the page and I can't seem to find how to undo the damn thing.

I have read that ctfmon is connected to Microsoft Office applications. I do not have any Office apps installed on my PC however, Seemingly from out of nowhere ctfmon.exe has appeared on my startup list and as many times as i have unchecked it from starting, the next time Windows starts and i run mconfig.THERE IS AGAIN.Is this causing any harm? Could it be some kind of virus or spyware or malware? Should I just leave it alone and let it startup with Windows or should I remove it from my system so it cannot return to startup. If I should get rid of it PLEASE TELL ME HOW I CAN REMOVE IT SAFELY. I would prefer to remove it if I can because I don't like the idea of an uneccesary process running in the background on my system.

Every so often I check around and make sure everything is as it should be. A few days ago I discovered a new user account on my computer called ASP.net. When I googled it , it told me it came from Microsoft. If they have a user account on my machine don't they have acess to everything on my computer? I seem to remember downloading Update so maybe it came from that. I deleted the account right away anyway

some of the icons on my Windows XP desktop suddenly have little colored symbols on them? For example, some of my Word icons on the desktop now have a green checkmark; one has a red exclamation point. A PDF icon also has a green checkmark. This just now started...is it relative to an automatic update?

I have Windows XP Pro SP2 installed and I messed it up.I tried doing loads of stuff and I had to repair the master boot record and boot.ini file. Then when I booted on xp, the blue screen appared.I checked my hardware and did loads of tests but didn't find much problems and I if I did, I didn't understand them. For example I had test problems with my parallel ports and serial ports and the System Stress Test failed in RAM Memory.Anyway, I desided to use the repair installation on my CD Windows XP Pro SP1. But each time it arrived at "installing hardware", it failed and just stoped. tried a few times but it kept stoping. And now the repair doesn't even start... all I see is the mouse.

I installed the software for a HP DeskJet 5940 photo printer that I purchased. Afterwards, a "Safely remove hardware" icon appeared in the taskbar. None of the startup entries for the new printer are running in the background, so I don't know how to get rid of it.
1. Right-click within the notification area, and then click Properties.
2. On the Taskbar tab, click Customize.
3. Select Safely remove hardware, and in the Behavior column, click Always hide.

Yesterday I started up the desktop PC (a Dell Dimension 8400 Series), to find that a password had spontaneously appeared on the sole User account.I attempted a Safe Mode start to try and log in as the Admin (also previously unpassworded), in order to reset the User password, only to be faced with another password that hadn't been there previously.I have never put any passwords on either the User or Admin accounts, and these new passwords have seemingly come out of nowhere.

Not sure what brought this on but today when I did a reboot to get reconnected to my network, the f8 boot option screen appeared. I selected 'normal' which failed ending back at the boot option screen. However, I can boot in safe mode (or safe with networking). I have tried eliminating things by using msconfig but I have not had any luck. One clue may be that while booting, the MS logo screen appears as normal for about 15 seconds and then I see a blue screen flash just for an instant. I have only managed to read the word 'detected' on it. System immedietly goes to blank screen and does a hdw boot. Boot never gets to the GUI interface. Is there some way to stop the system when an error is detected or a way to log errors? Am I correct in assuming that a hardware problem is not too likely if system runs in safe mode?

As the title states my computer all of a sudden started to be really slow, this happened about a week ago.Well, a little history behind my Laptop. It's an Acer TravelMate 4070, and I got it at the end of summer vacation 2006, so it's kinda old, I know. Anyways, it has worked perfectly for it's purposes until a week ago. I only used it for Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Firefox, Messenger, iTunes and World of Warcraft (admitted; im addicted) which all ran with no problems at all.Now 3 weeks ago I reformatted it, due to helluvalot BSODS, and then I reformatted it again 2 weeks ago 'cos the 3 weeks ago reformat was a false copy of Windows XP, tho.
Firefox, WinRar, Windows Live, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Daemon Tools, VLC, Spytbot S&D, CCleaner and all the drivers for my laptop ofc. Then there went a week and I installed BitTorrent, 'cos I wanted something I've allready payed license on! After that there went 3 days and my computer suddenly started to run very slow.It takes 2 minutes to start up and explorer.exe uses additional 1 minute to load. Also, I can't play music and watch videos on it anymore, music simply gets a "lag" every 1sec, and videos plays like they have a FPS equal 1, plus my CPU speeds is on 60%+ if I have anything open at all or moves my mouse to fast.

Could this be a result of a security or windows update?

I have a MITSUMI CD-ROM FX54++M and a CR-48XCTE drives.they stopped working, and under device manager it says this for both: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" Im pritty sure that the reason for this was when i was installing quicktime 7 with itunes and it prompted me if i wished to change windows so that every time i put in a cd it would auto-run the cd, because after i rebooted they stopped working. If i uninstall the drives windows still detects them, and the drives work physically. I have changed autorun back to 0 in regedit but that has changed nothing, and when i tried to install the driver for the CD-R drive it says it cannot detect any drive. I also did a system restore and the drives still do not work
