Deleting Microsoft Outlook Icon Appeared On Desktop?
Sep 6, 2005For some reason, an Microsoft Outlook icon has appeared on my Desktop.I don't want it there because I don't use it. (I use Outlook Express 6.0). But I hesitate to delete it as it doesn't appear to be a shortcut, but the program itself.How can I move this to where it belongs, i.e. somewhere in Program Files?

May 19, 2006I installed the software for a HP DeskJet 5940 photo printer that I purchased. Afterwards, a "Safely remove hardware" icon appeared in the taskbar. None of the startup entries for the new printer are running in the background, so I don't know how to get rid of it.
1. Right-click within the notification area, and then click Properties.
2. On the Taskbar tab, click Customize.
3. Select Safely remove hardware, and in the Behavior column, click Always hide.

Jan 1, 2005Several unwanted desktop icons appeared recently (I think they come via Search2000 when IE is used). They won't right-click for deletion, nor will they allow themselves to be drop-dragged to the recycle bin. They don't appear in the desktop icon list when using the desktop cleanup feature.

When I'm using the internet the content of that icon will just be automatically opened in different tab without clicking it and just pops multiple times after being closed. While this does not seem like such a serious issue, I am concerned it may be a sign of a larger problem. I have not had a crash however, so I do not know why the sudden change. I would prefer not to do a system restore, if there is another option. I also could not see any simple solution in the power management settings.

Nov 24, 2007I have reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP2 on my a computer that I built and started to install other programs as usual so that I could use this computer. The Windows Update balloon saying there are updates for your computer(it also claimed that I could work on other things while the updates occurred. So I installed other programs--Photoshop CS2, Quicktime Pro 7, Wacom Pen Tablet software drivers. The Windows Update happened three times. 1st had about 20 different updates, I rebooted with no problems. 2ns had 35 updates including IE 7, rebooted with no problems, 3rd time had 47 updates, rebooted and now my desktop is blank. My Pen Tablet (mouse) works but I don't see any icons or the START bar. My programs still work because when I open the Windows Task Manager and choose New task, I can browse for programs. Surfing thru other threads in this forum, I thought maybe I had a virus or malware.Just have never had any error messages. so I downloaded and ran these program scans: WPFind3u, VundoFix, AntiSuperspyware. Scans came up with no find of malicious stuff, but my desktop was visible afterwards. I've even tried starting up in safe mode. I get a black screen there--no icons on desktop.

Feb 11, 2005I will click on a desktop icon and nothing happens. Well, the hour glass comes up but thats it, nothing else happens. I can click on several icons and the exact thing happens each time (nothing). Control-alt-del will not work either. After letting the computer idle for about 5 minutes I will click on anything and then every single icon that I clicked on earlier will all pop up at once.

Nov 5, 2008I am running Windows Xp Pro on a network. I have version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600. My problem is that last Friday my desktop icons started having a blue back ground behind them. I have tried right clicking on the desktop and clicking properties then the desktop tab and there I can change the background colors, but I want the background to go away totally. I used to have just the icon and words with no back ground color at all. Can anyone help? I've compared the setting on this laptop to my other one at home and didn't come up with anything there. I also tried to restore the system to a date prior to Friday, but I get the message can not restore for every restore point I have chosen.
